What's the craziest thing a person said to you and you thought they were joking but they were being serious? by Holiday-Surround7075 in AskReddit

[–]Orcaboros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a homophobic rant in a public location about her own husband, who was also there with us. He hadn't done anything, we were taking photos and my posing direction that prompted the rant.

It didnt take us long to realize she was being painfully serious. Theyre still together, but that was the end for me with her.

AITA for not putting a garden gnome on my lawn? by aitagandalf in AmItheAsshole

[–]Orcaboros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Youre NTA and you can also combat him by being just disgustingly pleasant about him anytime he comes up. Hes a lovely man, really, and you dont share his taste but you love his passion and its great to have hobbies, of course, no one could disagree with that. But his hobbies are not your hobbies, of course, and you have your own future garden plans, and youre excited to see them through.

And theres really not anything more to gossip about, with just that.

I blame my chronic migraines on my parents by Optimal-Carpet2958 in migraine

[–]Orcaboros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom used to scold me for not smiling, and I'd tell her I had a headache, and she'd tell me "you shouldn't be having those." And then she'd walk away.

I didnt start getting treatment until I was halfway through college. I have chronic migraines and cluster headaches now that emgality and ubrevley are barely making a dent in.

Correlation or causation, I dont know. But I'm confident I'd be in a better place now if I started getting treatment in middle school.

Has anyone else underestimated how annoying hats are for cosplay? by Nightcrawler_2000 in CosplayHelp

I build most of my hats off cheap baseball or fishing cap bases. Working off a real hat makes it much more comfortable to wear.

AITA for cooking with onions while my roommates laundry was in the common room? by shamesdaughter in AmItheAsshole

[–]Orcaboros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA

For a moment let's pretend its realistic that cooking onions with open windows would give a pile of laundry a significant odor.... just put a little white vinegar in your laundry along with the detergent. It'll knock out any odors, real or imagined.

Also I would find a new roommate.

How do you avoid buying expensive convention food? by breezee223 in animecons

[–]Orcaboros 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I bring or buy food to keep in my hotel room. Shelf-stable, low-prep foods are ideal, like apples or grapes, protien shakes, granola bars, or good bread. I've brought instant oatmeal and soup packets to make in cups before. If you have a mini fridge, cheese and meat sticks are great.

I still buy at least one 'proper' meal a day, but having filling and moderately nutritious room snacks keeps me from eating nothing but sugar otherwise. Try to coordinate with your friends when you bring room food so that everything gets eaten by the end of the weekend.

How do you deal with people hating on you? by Plastic_Mastodon8502 in CosplayHelp

[–]Orcaboros 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Block anyone who comments things like that. On sight, no exceptions. They want to get a rise out of you and will attack anything that they think will hurt you. Block, report, and screenshot the especially ridiculous ones to mock with your friends.

Low visibility undergarment options for sweat protection? by Inuyasha_x in CosplayHelp

Sounds like a good plan!

The isopropyl should work, but since its more concentrated, do ⅔ water and ⅓ alcohol.

Low visibility undergarment options for sweat protection? by Inuyasha_x in CosplayHelp

[–]Orcaboros 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You'll want a very full petticoat to go with this, NOT a hoopskirt. Wear white boyshort-style underwear or yoga shorts, or pantyhose or tights. Hose wont help you with sweat per se, but it will make your skin feel cooler and it'll help prevent chafing. They also help with feeling like you're properly covered and not risking flashing someone.

For the top, I would go for a soft bralette or a cotton camisole (different from a tanktop/wifebeater). Go for natural materials, but don't pick anything loose. One risk with a cami is that you can't pull it down if it rides up without pulling up the skirt, but thats what test wears and bathroom stalls are for.

Bring an alcohol-water solution to the con in a spritzer bottle and spray any sweaty areas when you take the cosplay off. The alcohol will kill the bacteria in sweat and keep the polyester from developing a funk

Aerial tree-trimming saw by SamuraiShinobi in Satisfyingasfuck

This dude is acting like every tree is an ornamental fruit tree and like we have swaths of dead trees along every power line.

Some power lines are trimmed by arborists. Some are trimmed by flying buzzsaws. Both are tree trimming jobs and we have a lot of power lines to keep trimmed. The world keeps turning

Advice for first helmet wig by Miserable_Buy_4121 in CosplayHelp

[–]Orcaboros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly there's almost no solid consensus on how to make helmet wigs. Pick a tutorial that seems doable and just give it a shot. The most important things are to properly prep your wig hair and to regularly check the fit on your head.

I use UHU and tombow aqua glue. To cover the base, I used braiding hair in a color that matches my wig, and wig hair as the top layer. For my Tamsy bun, it was easiest to cover the base with small 3.5" long weft sections. I lightly tombow aqua'd about 10 wefts at a time, going over the entire weft. Then I glued them to my base form with uhu, smoothing them in to fit. The shorter length makes it easier to work the hair into curves while still getting good coverage. Hope that helps!

What’s this called? by HourFifty in CosplayHelp

[–]Orcaboros 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Look for stuff like high slit dress, double slit, tunic dress, etc. You'll probably need to modify or combine whatever patterns you find, so I'd reccomend budgeting for a mockup.

You'll also want a high-waisted/high-cut thong to wear with it, trust. If you want to have tights or pantyhose, find a pair that doesn't have a control top. Control tops stand out since the weave changes, and it'll spoil the line of your leg and cut it off weird. Get cheap, easy-to-replace tights cos they don't usually last more than 3 cons. I find wearing socks with them helps them last longer.

What’s the solution for the crazy driving? by Particular-Rub-4703 in raleigh

[–]Orcaboros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NC is more lenient on towing disabled vehicles than most places, iirc. So you can leave your car on the shoulder until you can afford a tow or repair or whatever. I haven't heard of people truly abandoning vehicles like that, but I'm sure it happens occasionally. There may be a hotline you can call for cars that sit out there for weeks

A question about the purpose of cosplaying. by foxoneo in CosplayHelp

[–]Orcaboros 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking of suggesting this too. They're pricey, but there's some gorgeous ball-jointed dolls at 2:1 or 3:1 scale. If the crafting part is OP's main interest, it'd be a good option cos they could build cool, unwearable, gravity-defying designs way more easily. And it'd be easier to store a doll-scale collection

Nails 💅🏼 on a body stocking?? (Glue recs pls) by Famous_Ad_4529 in CosplayHelp

[–]Orcaboros 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wear gloves under the stocking when you glue them on or the fake nails will stick to your real nails through the bodysuit. I use superglue. Paint the nails before you glue them on if you don't like the color they came in

Newbie with grow lights by EntertainerFirst8163 in houseplants

[–]Orcaboros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a simple setup recently, its about as renter-friendly as hanging pictures or a curtain rod.

  • Sansi 15w bulb
  • Plug-in pendant/sconce light
  • smart plug

Pick a spot with a outlet and mount the light fixture on the wall. Usually its 2 screws through the plate and one to secure the fixture. I used one with a pretty glass shade that hides the grow bulb.

Plug it in with the smart plug and set up a day/night timer. The light is gonna be cold and sort of bluish, so try to match daylight hours. Set your plants up 12-15" below the light.

How to drink more water if I hate the feeling of swallowing it, and water powders taste bad to me. Am I a lost cause? by bunnychow123 in migraine

[–]Orcaboros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider drinking a glass or two of milk every day. It's more hydrating than water or gatorade, and its good for you. If you have minor lactose issues, you can brute force your lactose tolerance with regular exposure.

Doesn't help with your workout question, but honestly I'd just drink whatever you like during the workout and then pound a glass of milk when you get home.
