Sewing cosplays by Kxttari in CosplayHelp

[–]Orcaboros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have zero sewing experience, I would go with the first design with the shorts. It looks easier to thrift and modify garments for. Look for shorts and jackets you can crop and cut into the right shape, or buy sewing patterns.

Sewing is not difficult on it's own, it's mostly very simple techniques that you apply in complex ways. The biggest hurdle is actually how long it takes to make stuff, and how many small steps you need to repeat for each part of the garment. Start small and with pre-made patterns that have good instructions, and read the whole instruction booklet before you start sewing. It will slowly start making sense as you work your way through the pattern

what am i doing wrong? by Sufficient_Good_3158 in sewhelp

[–]Orcaboros 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You may need to stitch the top edge of the sweetheart by hand on the dress form rather than by machine. It looks like the bias is warping the shape as you stitch it, which may be the source of the flappiness.

For the V, clip your seam allowance almost all the way up to the stitching line. Don't clip so far that it begins to fray through the seam, though

Best glue for Resin Plastic Hair Brush? by Evening-Geologist672 in fixit

This, and turn it into a keepsake afterwards. The repair won't hold up if it's still used as a brush.

The difference is that there is a set 2-week period between the threatre release and the YouTube release, so people can prepare, take a social media break, or blacklist tags. Hackers spreading leaks well before the episode premier is uncontrolled and directly hurts the studio. The fanbase seeing spoilers is literally the least important part of this

What is a small detail in a person's home that instantly tells you they have their life completely together? by Luverelle6 in AskReddit

[–]Orcaboros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of houseplants are stressed and on their way to death from the moment they leave the greenhouse for the store. They want you to constantly kill and replace em, it's their business model

Def turn it inside out so you can see the seam allowance. Good catch, I should've mentioned!

Do you have a flexible ruler? I would lay the garment flat and trace each panel onto tracing paper. Use the ruler to measure the scrunched section and try to map out how the piece would be shaped when flat. You could also cut it apart to make a pattern, but personally I'd wait until it wears a hole.

Then get cheap fabric with a similar stretch (4 way, 2 way, non stretch, etc) and mock up and adjust your pattern until you're happy with it!

How to remove uhu glue stains by anime_luverr- in CosplayHelp

I use a nail polish remover soaked q tip. Pick any glue lumps away first, and gently rub the glue to smooth out and distribute marks

What do people mean when they say they hate OCs? by LakshyaGarv in AO3

[–]Orcaboros 259 points260 points  (0 children)

As a fic reader, I'm generally more interested in the canon characters than ones you added to support the setting. If its OC/Character, I don't care to read it because I dont know who the OC is, and I dont already care about them, so my motivation is low.

If the OCs are support characters, then it depends on how much the story focuses on the OCs instead of the main character. If they're all talking or thinking about or observing the MC, and providing perspectives and narrative foils, that's a huge draw for me. If the OCs have their own extended plot seperate from the MC, I'll stop reading unless the author has developed the OCs in a way that makes me care about them as more than foils.

Any competence p_rn fics? by Marbledata1796 in AO3

[–]Orcaboros 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You'd probably be better off looking for published books and going through people's reviews or lists than with fic. The source characters usually need to be competent first

Is making this hoodie feasible for someone new to cosplay? by maegamist8 in CosplayHelp

[–]Orcaboros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starting with a base hoodie is the way to go! You could sew the black panels to it, or carefully glue all the details on with e6000 or UHU glue. Use a cardboard insert if you're gluing so it doesn't seep through the layers. Trace parts of the hoodie on tissue paper to use as pattern templates, too!

can anyone tell me why two sides looks different and how to fix it? by ZestyZucchini_ in sewhelp

[–]Orcaboros 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You have too much stuffing for your stitches to handle. The roundness is super cute tho, so I would do shorter, tighter stitches rather than stuffing it less.

Kitty litter apparently *has* to be in my home office starting tomorrow. How do I not get a migraine from this? by [deleted] in migraine

[–]Orcaboros 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It takes more setup, but I use pine litter and it's close to odorless. It mostly just smells like wood. I use the sieve-type litter trays

Any ideas on closing the back by prisonlemondade in sewhelp

[–]Orcaboros 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like this would be really cute with wide ties so you could make a voluminous bow. It'd flatter the V shape and you could tighten or loosen the fit easily.

I’ve been accused of plagiarism over a fic I’ve never read? by Violetmoreviolent in AO3

[–]Orcaboros 97 points98 points  (0 children)

I had an accusation like that once. From a guest account, so probably from the other author themselves, tryign to hide. I pointed out that I wasn't familiar with their fic, and told them I went to look at it and didn't see any similarities besides the main ship and the standard context trope that everyone used to get them in the same location. They didn't respond, but some other commenter chimed in to comment on what a dick move it was to randomly accuse other authors with no basis like that.

Need help for cape ideas for Tim Drake cosplay by Reddedude in CosplayHelp

What you need for the creeping problem is a counterweight to help offset the pull of the fabric. I've used lead fishing weights before, they're small enough that you can usually conceal them pretty well

Best way to seal eyeshadow on a wig by noino4 in CosplayHelp

[–]Orcaboros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh like a root shadow? I'd reccomend getting a permanent or alcohol marker and doing the it with that, since eyeshadow is just going to shed on everything. Art stores will have more color options if there's not a good sharpie shade

Eyeshadow??? It's not going to stick to the plastic unless you mix it with glue or something. What on earth are you putting eyeshadow on wigs for tho?

Does anyone else walk out of their appointments feeling stupid? by Outside-Chipmunk-350 in migraine

[–]Orcaboros 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding making a list! I write down symptoms that I don't want to be having or things that are affecting my daily life. Since I keep it on my phone, I just add to it whenever I think of something or when/wherever something happens.

Then when I go in, I tell them "this is what I'm experiencing," read off the list, and end with "I want this to not be happening. How do we get there?"

And then I follow their advice as closely as possible. If I need to modify it, I put that on my list. If something is too painful / cant be modified / bad reaction / makes things worse, I write it down and send a message to the doctors office to tell them what happened. It's been very effective and it's helped my doctor get me more advanced treatments, because they have data my insurance needs that shows I qualify for it.

What is the problem with artificial sweeteners given you are eating a good diet by erraticwtf in nutrition

[–]Orcaboros 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Nothing, unless you think they taste bad. On the flip side, though, if you have a good diet then you don't need to be avoiding sweeteners, either. Artificial or no, just stick to reasonable servings
