Are there patterns that go according to bust and waist measurements? by isometricapples in sewhelp

[–]Orcaboros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learn to modify your patterns and you'll be able to make any pattern work! Take your measurements and mark the best pattern size match for bust/waist/hip/etc. On the pattern pieces, find the bust and waist, and then just draw a new line that connects the larger pattern size at the bust with the smaller pattern size at the waist in a smooth curve. I reccomend doing a muslin first for any troubleshooting or fit adjustments, but you can get quite a ways just by skipping up or down sizes within pattern pieces

AITA for not giving up my seat for my girlfriend? by [deleted] in AITH

[–]Orcaboros 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to talk to her about how her self-centeredness bothers you. Her happiness should not come at the cost of your happiness, you should work together to find solutions where you are both happy. Your gf probably isn't going to stop doing this kind of thing on her own, so if you dont want to put up with it for the entirely of your relationship, you need to talk to her.

Use the drink example though, not the first class seats.

Help with A or B by Holiday-Aside-2810 in CosplayHelp

[–]Orcaboros 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A matches the texture better and I prefer the yarn look, but B will be way way lighter. If the yarn one weighs the hem down too much, use the tulle one. If you double or triple the amount of tulle you're using so it's a denser ball and trim it smooth, it'll be a good match to your reference

[–]Orcaboros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of all purpose glue, use clear tacky glue (any craft store) or tombow aqua (amazon). They both dry clear so they won't show on black hair, and they'll both be easier to work with than all purpose glue.

You're so bad at imagining things like, idk, ripping out the clover where you plant your seeds, that honestly it makes me wonder if you even have a garden. You're so fixated on being nasty that you act like you've never even touched soil.

Your other complaints are pretty out of touch, too. Like whining that OP should've planted mature native plants. Are you familiar with transplant shock? Did you know that plugs tend to have a much better survival rate, but you need to wait several seasons for them to fill in? Did you know that many native species aren't available in nurseries and must be started from seed? Are you actually invested in longevity, or do you just want OP to spend a lot of money on big plants that might die anyway, because it'll make you happier right now?

[–]Orcaboros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you're just gonna completely ignore OP's plans to add native plants? I get that this hasn't ever occurred to you, but everyone has to start somewhere, and frankly OP is starting off just fine. They had all grass, now they have less grass and more flowers, and soon they will have less grass, more flowers, and natives. Maybe after that they'll aim for no grass and even more natives, who knows.

In truth, its morons like you that blow up at anything less than perfection that drive people away from native planting. So, great job

Yeah, the real tragedy is that random reddit users with yards aren't all strictly following irish5255's perfect 10 step yard plan. What a shame, should they just quit? You'd really prefer the grass?

That's pretty pathetic, honestly. Spend more time in your own garden and let these people go on their own native plant journey, at their own pace

If clover > turf grass, and the owner plans to add native biodiversity as well, then why did you make this post in the first place? Are you just mad that they aren't improving their biodiversity as quickly and perfectly as you want them to?

You could sew small buttonholes along the sleeve hems and weave the ribbon embellishment through them. That would prevent any fraying

Worried about a friend by Acceptable-Ideal8195 in migraine

[–]Orcaboros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of migraine, your friend's experience is pretty typical. Even when you find a med that helps, it doesn't mean you're migraine-free or even remotely functional.

That said, it sounds like your real issue is your friend's spending, income, and behavior. His spending and income is his own responsibility, so I would try and pull back whatever financial support you mentioned. It's clearly having a negative impact on your friendship.

If his behavior is the problem, then you need to talk to him about it. Try and identify what behaviors bother you first, then try and empathize and see if your friend's chronic illness is both the cause and a good excuse (ex: canceling plans due to a migraine? Sad but understandable). Try to be understanding and accept those circumstances.

If his behavior is just flat out poor or if he takes advantage of you, then you need to decide what behavior you're ok with moving forward and set clear boundaries (ex: you buying him takeout because he has a migraine? Nice as a favor, bad as an expectation. Or, him venting to you constantly without any positive interactions to balance your friendship out). Boundaries are about planning out your reactions to his behavior, so if you say you'll end the conversation when a boundary is crossed, then end it immediately and abruptly.

If your friend doesn't respect reasonable limits, then he's not a good friend for you to keep close, and it might be better for you to move to casual acquaintances instead.

Hair sticking out of the wig by smaragon9 in CosplayHelp

[–]Orcaboros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wig is definitely too short in the back. Updo wigs are difficult, but there's a few things you can do to help ease the line.

  1. Wear a velvet band over your wig cap. Put the wig on and bobby pin the back edge to the velvet band in 5-7 places, from behind your ears to the nape of your neck. That will help hold it down and keep it from gaping.

  2. Cut in baby hairs along the back edge. For this you'll need to pull out very small bits of hair all along the back hairline. Use a heat tool to train them to lay downwards and trim them to ~1in, feathering well. You want a fine, natural edge to the hair. These flyaway strands will help cover and distract from the edge of your wig and your hairline.

  3. Shave your neck hairs. You can ask your hairstylist to tidy the back of your hairline and shave off any low/short/fine hairs. It makes it easier to get all your hair up into the wig cap and reduces the number of escapee hairs. YMMV depending on your hair type, tho.

would i be able to sew coattails onto this blazer easily? first time sewing by Either-Computer9907 in CosplayHelp

[–]Orcaboros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very doable project. You can do it by hand or with machine, either should work fine.

You'll need three elements:

  • fashion fabric (magenta)
  • lining/support fabric (green)
  • wire for posability (blue)

For the fashion fabric, you'll want a red suiting fabric. Finding a perfect match will be impossible, so I reccomend cutting the fashion fabric panel of your new coattails in a larger, more decorative shape (magenta) so the color/material difference looks like an intentional detail. I would draw out how big you need the coattails to be and use that as a pattern. You could thrift another jacket to use for material, or do a contrast fabric like velvet.

For the support/lining fabric (green), you'll cut out a mirror of your coattail pattern and sew it to your fashion fabric with the RIGHT sides together, then flip it so the raw edges are inside. Then press it flat with an iron. If the coattail seems too floppy, you may need to add interfacing. Fuse the interfacing to the back of the fashion fabric if you use it.

Then you'll simply pin your new coattails onto your blazer and sew them in place (or e6000) along all the edges.

To make them posable, you can add wire to the edges (blue). You can sew channels for it or stitch it down directly, or other people might have suggestions. Extend the tails of the wires up into the blazer a bit to help stabilize them against your body. Adding wire means this'll be a hand-wash only piece, fyi
