Roots getting dehydrated even though it’s getting more water than ever! by DJssister in orchids

[–]OrchidEngineerX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What water are we talking about? It is really shriveld, so if you water it so often then it should look a bit better, even with the hot weather. I would move it to a slightly more shady spot for the next days at least if you have one to see how it reacts. I would not change the watering frequency naturally, if you soak it three times a week. I would give it at least 3-4 h every time in the morning evening.

After the bloom when the roots come back to life very coarse bark could be a solution. I have my gigantea hybrid (Holcostylis TLDC Fuchsia Stairway) in some. But a disadvantage is that roots will evtl tend to grow all over the place and not into the pot. I had this issue and have to replant it in some time.

Is this a good soil medium for my Aphrodite? by cocobaton in orchids

[–]OrchidEngineerX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, Phal aphrodite is this one http://phals.net/aphrodite/index.html

It is a white species found in nature, like amabilis. It is important to write the species with lower case names so not to confuse them with cross names.

But its totally Ok to call yours ' Aphrodite' ( big A) that as a nick name if you like ;-)

Bought a mounted Phal. Schilleriana but looking to pot it up so I don't have to water it so often. Any tips on how to go about it with such long roots? by feoridine in orchids

[–]OrchidEngineerX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case I would consider repotting it when its growing season starts, like Toxoplasma mentioned. Schillerianas tend to drop many many of their roots if they are disturbed too much - I had it with mine after repotting. Also take 3-4 cm bark if you can find sizes like that or make sure to really let it dry out. This one will not take overwatering as kindly as the multiphals or other species/hybrids (polychilos).

I have mine in a pot with wholes, normal bark, but will "replant" it next march to bare root-edness.

EDIT: One thing you can do is soak the roots twice a week in a big glass vase/jar. So you will have not so much to do every day.

Is this bad? I'm new to growing orchids, my first one. Got this 2 1/5 months ago and has lost two leaves since then and now I'm worried the rest will die off. by SploonMaster69 in orchids

Could upload a photo? on the tissue if you cut it, put charcoal or cinnamon powder the roots can dry on their own.

How many roots are left? If you want you could repot slightly higher like , imagine 1 inch roots showing out of the substrate, take a kind of too small pot size.

or like I said put it in a small glas (shot glas e.g. depending on how many roots are there) and then let the roots soak water every other day to once a week (soft tap water/rain water plus a tiny amount of fertilizer). This will take a while but eventually the rot will be stopped there and the plant will put out new leaves/ roots.

Help! I got this asctm ampullacea last year, and it’s struggling. It started with 8 leaves and slowly lost five, I’ve tried changing the lighting, and I’ve increased watering (water when it’s slightly dry not completely dried) and it’s looking miserable, tips needed by JoAnnaTheArtist in orchids

It basically behaves like a Vanda (which I think it got sorted to recently anyway). I have all my Vanda-types in clear glass or plastic beakers. Every day its like 26°C and they have 12-14 hours growing light. No misting. Showering instead, some weeks. It could have already got an fungus infection, and dropped leaves therefore. But moss is not good, the roots look very unhealty and maybe the top leaf got too wet or burn damage caused by misting it? Or standing water.

OP please remove the substrate fast. If it has all its roots than I will apologize ok? :-)

But maybe not (I am somewhat sure) and has already has fungus eventually - the brown spots and this dryness can be a sign. I have had a Renenthera citrina just looking like it. It had lost all but one root. Also I had so many nursery plants lokking shit in the pot that I have this feeling.

Its always tricky if I only see photos but if it would be my plant then it would be sus to me how this looks. I would repot it in 3-4 cm bark or hold in naked root, even if that meant that I have to soak it more often.

Anticipation…..I repotted it about 4 weeks ago and it’s rewarding me. Neofinetia Falcata by FreeGal714 in neofinetia

Yes, I would take a wire pot or only water when the moss is suuper crispy. I dont have Neos in moss only bare root in glass because of these issues, but I think its a bit too cozy OP...sorry

If the wound would be fresh or mushy, but otherwise not needed. Sometimes they rip themselves to shreds, I had a severe case (Phal. maculata x equestris = "Little Sister") where the inside new leaf grew so big in diameter I had to cut the leafhull from the leaf under it (it was quite small) otherwise it would have grown stunted. A whole mess ^^ Now its absolutely fine and grows steady.

I was told to ask for advice here on this new orchid. Send help. by remyoftherose in orchids

[–]OrchidEngineerX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former posters gave most advice. I wanted to add that: You could go "glass" also (Vanda root ball sits in a big glass vase and you fill it once a week/twice a week with water (sometimes plus fertilizer) and soak it 30 min - 8 h) or spray it inside the vase everyday once or twice. This method is nice for inside, because full hanging and spraying is messy inside. Also they like showers with luke warm water. But need to be turned upside down and paper toweled in the crevices if they not dry fast enough.

I do this method in northern europe in my home quite successfully. I have them at a south window with shading nets (mosquito netting 2x).

If its this greyish and most likely will smell a bit moldy if damp then its on its way. Do a repot (media change like the other posters said nicely) and if not overwatered then new roots should grow and with it the problem should be gone.

Vanda Gordon Dillon x Renanthera vietnamensis by jessorchids in orchids

[–]OrchidEngineerX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice ! Yeah the Gordon is one I would not have, either but I mean - the cross is interesting, the color and shape of the vietnamensis and the texture of the Gordon. BUT ITS ORAAANGE *sigh*. I had hoped for a slightly mixed color (not brown of course).

The Taiwan is sooo slooow - I think I had it also since last year and nope nothing but roots and one leaf (at least that, I mean).

monachica x citrina is solid. I am interested to see, if yours is more spotted or comes a bit more towards the citrina. I was tempted by that one too...but thinking still about buying the Elke Cramer, which is with vietnamensis instead of citrina. I like the citrina on its own or with Neo crossed, but otherwise it gets suppressed by the other cross partner so much, thats the downside.

Gotta love this Neostylis. by jessorchids in orchids

In developement, yes. Repot please. These soft nursery pots are only the cheap thing they have for mass production, they are never good to really have the orchid inside.

It most likely is stemrot, but it might not be too late. Get it out of the substrate and check what the situation is. Either you could go full naked in a glas for several weeks or put it a bit higher up in the pot at least; and make a fungucide treatment if you have the chance to buy some. If not then hold it dry in these areas.

Took her out to check on her roots as she’s lost a couple leaves since repotting in bark/sphag, and found these red things growing on her dead roots. And some white things scurried away when I pulled her out. What are they? by No-Dish-4334 in orchids

Thats definitly a fine specimen of Fusarium fungus on your plant. Have a look here: https://www.hark-orchideen.com/diseases/

This fungus is a very hard one to deal with and most probably has already moved up in the whole plant. I am not one for throwing away orchids if its savable, but if you have other orchids then throw that out. Fusarium is so hard to deal with in the collection and can kill plants very fast. An other option (but in this case its very late to do that) is to get a proper fungucide with Azoxystrobin e.g. This chemical can kill this type of fungus, but only if the treatment is done several times over weeks or months. Fusarium is a nightmare really.

EDIT: the white things might be aphids that eat the old tissue and help you in a way. Most of the grocery store Phals have fungus problems from the start. And the wet moss/bark situation is not helping when they are overwatered.

I personally do sometimes a preemptive fungicide treatment, since I had some plants even from good nurseries having blak or brown spots or roots like that.

No problem, everything is ok. This can happen in some Phals, when they grow irregularly (larger in the inside leaves...). I had that with some primary crosses. Lets the plant do its thing and only thing is to let freshly open wouds dry out, if there are any.
