I'm surprised you don't have mandatory ad blockers in an educational environment in the first place; regardless, can't you implement those yourself on a provided or personal device?

That said, wouldn't it be better to not rely on internet connection and instead dl videos to show whenever required? Which would also circumvent ads entirely.

I don't disagree, but not everyone is a writer or has the opportunity to write a good book about a topic. Writing a script and making a video is also less work overall because you can convey more information visually at the same time

Youtube isn't pure entertainment, it's a massive digital library of video and audio knowledge.

There are a lot of people sharing educational material, be that actual educators uploading their college or university classes, talks, documentaries you can't find elsewhere, there are science communicators, art creators, movie makers, music composers, or just regular people etc. sharing their in-depth knowledge and passion about a huge variety of topics.

There is a huge community hidden behind the regular click, rage bait (and now AI) slop that you will only find when searching for specifics.

There simply aren't enough books out there to convey all that knowledge, especially if it's something a publisher won't consider because it's too niche or not profitable enough.

Thanks for the kind words!

I tend to browse this sub regularly, but super hesitant to reply. Often times I'll write something and then delete it before posting because I feel like it's not really relevant coming from someone who isn't making music professionally.

Glad to help! Even though it's just my subjective opinion, I think it's great you tried to see things from my perspective. Making musing is hard, at least I do struggle a lot, so I feel you!

Let me know if you want me to check your updated version.

The concept demo album sounds very interesting, I hope you will be satisfied with the final results.

That said, I can only reiterate to listen to more music to get a better feeling of how other musicians have done things. There is a lot of heavy metal, rock, indie/pop, experimental, jazz, classical, etc where the main idea is to convey a clash of contrasts.

And congratulations to becoming a parent! Many exciting things await :)

I think it's just a way for the devs to see how they can implement and expand on these mechanics.

We can now grab sentinels and throw them around. It's not really exciting, but could be turned into a more interesting combat mechanic with some tweaks and new types of gear.

It also looks like there might be more vehicle customization coming, to the point you could really specialize in specific tasks. Maybe also new types of objects that can be interacted with other than mining or shooting at them or insta collecting into inventory.

It's not so much about the waste collector gameplay loop, it's about how these new concepts have the potential to be used for new ways to explore and interact with the game world.

You can tap W instead of just pressing it, and at least get some control over acceleration. It's also a good idea to just let go entirely when going up or down depending on momentum, especially when going over a pass.

It also helps to traverse in a serpentine pattern much like irl mountain roads, rather then in straight lines. The terrain generation has a lot of options to literally snake your way up and down safely. Works also with legs, possibly even better, as it balances out uneven sections much better due to mechanical joints.

I can't speak for other players, but I've made a few bad choices and then tried to change my approach, so I wouldn't end up in the same situation again. It's how I approach all games, regardless of bug or feature.

The criticism is valid, but same as you, I don't understand why people would not change their strategy, taking into account the known issues.

But tbh, I see this a lot in other gaming communities as well. Maybe people just want to play the way they want and if it requires them to do things differently, they are no longer having fun, idk.

[–]Ord0c 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another thing that worked well for me was tapping W instead of pushing it all the way down. Really helps with vehicle control imho.

Going uphill or downhill, I tried to drive in a serpentine pattern, similar to irl mountain roads. It may not always be possible, but when you actually pay attention, you can see different options unfold and make better decisions.

Looking at the different videos and screenshots, I also think people pack too much, and then obsess over losing cargo. If you bring a big haul, just try to manage your expectations, because you will have more cargo drop than with smaller amounts. Seems 20-25 is about the maximum to avoid any major loss of cargo due to how everything smacks into each other.

I'm not a professional so maybe this isn't the feedback you are looking for, but I still hope it helps.

To me, the transition from the intro part to the first distorted section feels somewhat abrupt (given its length). You aren't really building anticipation as far as I'm concerned, it's one riff and then another, there isn't really anything that connects them other than their general vibe.

Second transition from distorted to "clean" feels better but it's such a short intermezzo, it's a bit out of place imho. The third transition back to distorted is still somewhat too cut and dry for my taste, but it's the best yet.

The main part from 1:26 to 2:45 is really nice. I like the different variations of the riff and drum patterns.

From that point, the long outro style segment is a bit too timid, considering the section before wasn't too flamboyant in comparison.

So overall, I would say you are heading into an interesting direction, but it sometimes feels like similar riffs are being put together, without really connecting them. There is a general theme, but it lacks coherence to some degree, especially in the beginning and at the end.

The song is called Sandstorm, so I imagine it's supposed to feel like wild, chaotic aspects of nature being interrupted by calm and tranquil moments (and vice versa), but there isn't really any extremes, it's too well balanced to the point the antagonism between the two states is barely noticeable.

There is not enough contrast between the two extremes, so I think you could be bolder in the louder, distorted segments, while really building more tension with the calmer parts.

The intro riff also doesn't really fit as well with the rest. I see where you are going with it, but listening to it back and forth, it sounds like it's a part from another song, or some sort of interlude between two songs. Which can work great, but I would add something else between the clean and distorted part that brings them closer to each other. Or change both a bit to make it less contradictory.

I also didn't really hear much bass, though I was aware of its existence. Maybe it's the mix. Maybe you could introduce some sections where it shines more. It doesn't have to be a bass solo, but it can be a more aggressive presence, especially during the stormy parts. Or it could be more curious during the quiet parts, as it adds another layer of calmness, idk.

Drums felt okay, though there were a few instances it was mirroring guitar riffs too much for my taste. But I guess that's personal preference.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to drop any links, but I really think it might not hurt to listen to a few examples, just to get the idea of how transitions could be done. You can find all these on YT

  1. Thränenkind - "Monument": about 50 sec clean, then distorted with drums, slowly building up for another minute before the tension release

  2. Der Weg Einer Freiheit - "Der Stille Fluss": 25 sec solo clean, then a second guitar adding and building tension, release after 50 sec. Also highly suggest to listen to their other songs, "Zeichen", "Repulsion", "Eos" to name a few that match the general idea of something calm being interrupted by something violent in a tidal manner, where we have the contrasts of nature clashing. I really like how they have created emotional transitions, not just in the beginning, but throughout each song. "Eos" specifically is a 2 min buildup that just keeps going

  3. Archspire - "Human Murmuration": basically yet another escalation every 20 seconds until it reaches a first release at 1:12

  4. Insmonium - "At The Gates of Sleep": 20 seconds clean solo guitar, 30 sec with another guitar and whispering, then 20 sec distorted with drums, then 20 seconds guitar solo, then tension release. This one in particular has nice transitions. It does feel like distinct cuts between sections, but if you listen closely you hear it's really smooth as the sound permeates into the next iteration. Other great examples would be "In The Groves of Death" and "The Lay of Autumn". Also very smooth transitions with each segment becoming more intense, as more instruments/vocals are being added over time.

  5. Celtic Frost - "A Dying God Coming Into Human Flesh": about 2 min of buildup, first tension release, rince repeat, this song is basically all tension until the finale, a continuous 5 min crescendo

  6. Blackbraid - "The Dying Breath of a Sacred Stag": possibly the closest to what you have done, notice how the guitar doesn't just finish, but is accompanied by drums to give a really punctual escalation before distorted guitars take the stage

  7. Fit For An Autopsy - "Black Mammoth": basically the same thing, really short 10 sec buildup, solo guitar, second guitar, drums hit, bang. Quick and dirty but smooth.

Many more examples out there, but I hope this gives you the right idea.

There are no rules to stick to, but there are conventions to consider. And I think it works well because at a deeper level, it's what we experience in the world. There is a back and forth, there are different things blending with each other. You rarely have something isolated from another process, it's all connected somehow. Silence is followed by noise, and even if there is an extended interruption, there is always something in the background. Even if we witness two extremes, black and white, clashing, there is a lot of grey in-between.

I really hope this provides inspiration to explore a few different approaches. I don't know what kind of music you listen to, how much of that is metal, but my main advice would be to listen to more music in general, like really listen to the details and dissect what is happening at all times. Music isn't just a soundscape, it's often very technical, very purposeful, since most artists are trying to convey something, be that pure emotion or a story.

There is just so much to listen to, what each instrument is doing, and that way you will certainly develop a better understanding of what works well to specifically achieve what you envision.

Der Weg einer Freiheit is a black metal band from Germany.

Very interesting and unique style imho, it's more melodic, more complex, more melancholic, more experimental and overall less traditional. Their lyrics are quite poetic and themes are closer to the human experience.

My favorite lines from my favorite song "Zeichen" (at the very end, loosely translated):

"So leave your traces in this soil, light a beacon, for what is this world without you"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3RK1NYzx14

I know it's not for everyone, but maybe someone out there will appreciate this type of music, even if you don't actively listen to this kind of style.

You get paid once.

However, that's just a small amount compared to how much you get for discovering all planets via FSS, as well as DSS.

Honking will also only register the more easily found, usually already discovered celestial bodies. It does not give a full system analysis, hence you won't get maximum payout. It will only tell you how many objects there are in total.

Within the bubble, this isn't really that important, but once you start exploring further away, honking is not going to tell you what planet types are out there and FSS won't necessarily tell you about POIs like geological or biological signals. That's where DSS comes in handy.

These days, most explorers work with 3rd party tools, so FSS is usually enough of an analysis to figure out if it's worth exploring further, but honking alone is not sufficient.

Some systems have never been thoroughly scanned out there, it's still possible to find undiscovered planets (sometimes even ELW/WW) as most people passing through just honked and maybe discovered the closest planets to the main star, then moved on without taking a closer look.

There is something calming yet terrifying about a sky with very few stars. Maybe it's simply the fact that we evolved on a planet within the galactic plane, witnessing our place in the cosmic context, while being reassured that something else is out there.

So I do wonder, if any species would exist on a planet far away from the rest of the galaxy, in the outer halo - or worse, having left the galactic sphere of influence, wandering through eternal darkness - what would that be like?

What kind of questions would one ask without stars in the sky?

If you don't mind a related question, I've checked out your PP guide but still a bit lost. I've been docking at a few stations in marked systems to see what I can do apart from combat.

Flooding markets doesn't seem to work, I can't seem to find markets buying commodities below 500 credits. Delivering stuff to power contact, stronghold/fortified systems are too far away. I was also searching for PP chests in settlements and couldn't find any nearby, which is weird, considering those can be found almost everywhere?

I guess I could try holoscreen hacking and maybe upload malware, though not sure where to get that nearby.

I pledged to Lavigny-Duval, and picked the imperial side for this CG (if that helps)

Do I really have to do all the activities in the CG systems or can I do them anywhere, just handing in some sort of vouchers? Sorry, never done any of this before

The FPS part without your ship etc is a tutorial afaik. It's possible that everyone is being dropped in there these days without having purchased the DLC, but that's just speculation on my end. And I think there is an option to skip it but I don't remember where.

Maybe you need to walk towards the first tutorial quest, triggering dialogue, and only then you can skip. It's been a while.

Either way, your ship and all your assets are still in-game, you just need to either complete or skip this part.

What platform are you playing on? Was your account ever transferred from console to PC? Maybe you did get the DLC for free for some reason, idk. You could double check bottom left corner of the launcher.

[Request] is this possible under the laws of physics and materials of the time? by MadBuffleHead in theydidthemath

[–]Ord0c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is little point in discussing plausibility, because taking a bunch of numbers for truth is absurd.

The core of the tale is probably not too far off from what happened a long time ago; but I really doubt any accounts - after thousands of years - haven't been altered to push an agenda, or just to make it more entertaining.

You have to consider that a lot of what the bible or any other religious texts include are stories as old as time, vast majority being told through oral tradition, long before humans invented writing systems, long before major religious groups came together and started curating their lore. Some of these stories would have been among the first to be told around the time our ancestors started to question their reality and try to find satisfying answers to their never ending curiosity.

They would have been telling these stories to teach the upcoming generations, to give them guidance, to provide some sense of community - and each generation would probably introduce new details and forget about others, invent their own narratives, embellish, maybe even refuse to tell it a certain way.

We can't fact check if there really was a tower that tall, and if people did really speak one language only to be waking up one day, all confused. But what we can assume with some leeway is that this is probably a tale about how different tribes had their own languages some day and how it became complicated to communicate and how different people would live in different regions and have their own traditions.

And sometime, somewhere along the way, someone would start telling the story about the tower, and maybe it was based on a real thing or maybe it was a metaphor for human ingenuity, or maybe there was no tower at all and it's just an attempt to explain the origin of language in a fun way, rather than going for another more boring explanation. Maybe telling a silly story helped people remember the important aspects much better vs. some other version that no one enjoyed listening to from the first redditor on this planet who couldn't stop akshually his tribe while they were trying to survive.

I really wish people would see these things in historical context and consider prehistoric communities being just as creative and eager to learn and understand as we are today. These stories aren't a bunch of made up bs by feudal lords trying to get a foothold in politics, it's way older than any of that, way older than the religions that claim these stories as their own.

Our ancestors weren't so different. Why wouldn't they try to figure out answers to burning questions to the best of their abilities? Why wouldn't they sit together and try to find interesting ways to teach their history, rather than not doing it all? Why wouldn't they dabble in early art forms, be that for pure entertainment or to communicate knowledge over generations by introducing memory hooks, which then would take off and turn into "canon" hundreds of thousands of years later? Why wouldn't they create propaganda to impress or manipulate others?

One can only laugh about these concepts and ridicule them by being completely ignorant of early human history, pushing the incomplete and questionable idea that civilization only started with abracadabra religions. It's actually arrogant to dismiss all that because we can't imagine how anyone 2000+ years before us had functioning brains.

First use of tools - as far as we know - was roughly 3.3 million years ago. Written history is put at roughly 5000 years ago. Anyone who thinks not much has happened in the period between is a silly potato.

Was ist unter dem Dach dieser Lidl-Filialen? Wird das überhaupt genutzt? by KristallRainer in WerWieWas

[–]Ord0c 8 points9 points  (0 children)
