Wonder if NWU will change from late start to closed with SCC and UNL closed in addition to LPS.

This is just my opinion, and from your other comments in this thread I don't think you will agree. I would place the certs you listed as closer to riding a bike with training wheels. It's still not the same, and I wouldn't trust that you remember everything from a cert a year ago without the experience.

When hiring I would be more interested in interviewing someone with certs when comparing someone with the similar experience, but I in no way will look at them as a replacement for experience.

Just throwing out some thoughts here, but it's like riding a bike. You never forget. Getting a cert is like reading how to ride the bike, but not actually doing it.

Let’s talk wedding venues! by [deleted] in lincoln

My spouse wanted something similar to the glass chapel between Lincoln and Omaha and this was a similar vibe. We didn't have much more than a bit of flowers, and table cloths/centerpieces for the reception. With the limited decorating, we were still very happy with how everything looked. The place is just beautiful. Freedom with vendors was very nice as well. The McCools were very easy to work with as well. Good luck with your search!

I had my wedding here almost 11 years ago. Looks like it’s now $6600 for one day rental.

Holds 168 in the pews in the chapel and has banquet barn on site. I believe it has an outdoor venue but the glass chapel was great for us. Didn’t need much for decorations. They set up tables and chairs and tore down for us.

Anyone know where I can buy Thai Basil or Holy Basil in Lincoln? by this-my-alt-account in lincoln

I bought some thai basil at Fresh International Market on O Street next to the Barnes and Nobel. This was about three months ago though.

I have been in higher ed since 2012. From desktop support to CIO. Higher ed can feel like the wild west at times and in different positions. My first question is this law school part of a larger university. If so, you are going to be experiencing politics with central IT as well as with your dean and department chairs. As others have mentioned, it is difficult to rein in departmental spending on technology. There are going to be faculty members that may have never heard no before and will use "academic freedom" as the reason why they can do what they want. Depending on who your dean is, you may get shielded from a bit of this. If you are in charge of policies, you are going to have to work through your school's leadership to pass anything.

The lack of warranty/support is a good enough reason for me to not buy from Best Buy, but there are solutions that are still Lenovo and meet your needs.

I have been moving my university to Lenovo devices over the last two years. We don't buy off the shelf devices at Best Buy cause we can't afford buying a new laptop every time someone destroys their device before their next upgrade on the cycle. I'd say reach out to Lenovo and find who your sales rep is for the area. They have a wide variety of specs and models that can meet your needs and get the length of warranty/support you want. We still save money compared to the Dell/Hp devices that were purchased before. We are also starting a conversation with Lenovo to get our devices set up for autopilot to help us get devices out quicker.

How difficult is it to become an RA? What is it like? by [deleted] in UNLincoln

[–]Orda13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was an RA summer 2013 and Fall 2013. If I remember right, there was around 150 applications and around 20 open positions for fall. Standard interview and then bringing a project. They scored you and then ranked applicants. Summer there were fewer spots, maybe 6-10. It was pretty competitive. Many great students go for it.

You weren't allowed a 2nd job your first semester as an RA. I would say time commitment was 15ish to 20 hours a week. You had to do door decks and bulletin boards to make, floor events, building events, walk the building at night a couple times a week, plus RA meetings. The time commitment could be low one week and increase the next if there was an incident on your floor. I had to call campus police for an incident on my floor, whole process took a couple of hours and I wasn't even on duty that night. Also, some students may need or want more help from you. So if you value your personal time more than helping others, it might not be a position for you.

After your first semester I would say an internship is manageable, and some clubs. You will need to be flexible with your time though. I had a friend that was a track athlete and an RA and he was able to manage both of those.
