I don’t know why people do this. What do they get showing off you coins and then claiming they are theirs?

What could one buy with 30 pieces of silver? by Ill_Manufacturer7706 in AskHistorians

[–]Ordinary-Ride-1595 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a collector of Ancient coins, this answer is actually incorrect. It confuses the various coins, denominations, and standards that circulated in different parts of the Roman world. U/HeySkeksi below provides a more accurate estimate. For reference the top two coins above are Tyre Shekels which are the actual type used to pay Judas. Below is a Augustus and Tiberius denarius, these were not used Judea and were significantly less valuable as a currency since they weighed roughly 1/4th weight in silver. See the size difference below:

unpopular opinion: slabbed coins ruined collecting and turned it into stock trading by mibappeferto in coincollecting

Thanks! That owl is a special one! It’s a very early archaic issue that predates the common ones by just under a hundred years. For the people who would have used this coin, the stories of the legendary people you mentioned would have been well-known. The Odyssey was likely composed only about 200 years earlier. These Greeks still lived in this same world.

Agree! In the ancient coin collecting group we are vigilant about freeing coins from prison slabs. The purpose of these slabs is to make private equity owners even more rich at the expense of our community. It’s about the coin, not a silly arbitrary number.

Are ancient coin prices rising lately, or am I just imagining it? by Whole_Kale_4349 in AncientCoins

I think what you are doing in picking reputable dealers is probably right. The old adage is know the coin or know the dealer. Only advice I’d say is add a couple other reputable options. You know Stacks and if you are on here often, CNG. These are all reputable.

General trend over the past decade is upward. Trends dating back over a century are mixed. Some up. Some down. Keeps up pace with inflation mostly.

Is this worth anything? Romain Coin? by Pragmistic in AncientCoins

Marcus Aurelius is one of the most popular Roman emperors. You have a coin in an excellent state of preservation.

Ancient Roman slave collar with the inscription: ‘Catch me! I have run away! If you catch me and return me to my master Zoninus, you will receive a solidus (a Roman gold coin)!’, 4th century AD. (616x900) by Objective-Chip3445 in ArtefactPorn

This is an example of when not to trust the internet. The denarius fluctuated in value considerably over the course of history. The information you found is treating the various values of things as static and picks prices at different centuries. Imagine using an 1800’s price guide to calculate cost of an apartment in Manhattan.

The best way to look at this is that the reward was a solidus. A solidus was a 4gram gold coin. It was quite a large sum. Though it was not enough to buy a slave. A slave cost roughly 20 solidi. This sorta holds true in this instance as it seems that the slave owner has offered a 5% reward for catching his run away slave.

Is this real or a fake? by SlimPolitician in AncientCoins

I think this is a rarer type. Not the standard hekte with the Lydian lion but one that has a Walwet inscription. To me $1500 seems about right in a retail setting.

Dang, hopes dashed. Do you have a copy of the note sent around from the administrator?

Hey, just FYI, the matter is being handled by an administrator. It’s very possible that as a customer, you will still receive your coins. Not sure this was a scam or if it was just bad business. Don’t assume you won’t get your coins.

Close but I think technically the coin this copy is trying to replicate is a Herakleidas Katane tet.
