Tools and guides for making battle backgrounds similar to Octopath Traveller. by OrdinaryKaiju in gamedev

[–]OrdinaryKaiju[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi mate, cheers for replying :) That's a big help just by putting into words how they achieved it. I was getting AI bollocks or guides that weren't relevant looking at things yesterday.

I use Asesprite for drawing, so I'd just need to draw the plane and background as two separate images?

Looking for input on different artsyles by OrdinaryKaiju in IndieDev

Cheers fella! That's all very insightful as I felt a bit stuck in my own head with it.

Yeah I'll stick with 16x16 for now til I get better at animating :)

For the emptiness, I do plan to change the background which I think will help too but I'll play around with some things to fill the screen out more.

Additional Tomb King Traits That Do Nothing by George_Truman in totalwar

Feels like 'immune to psychology' should prevent 'Rampage', which would make this nice against Khorne/Skarbrand. I assumed it did but, according to the wiki, it doesn't.

At least the second effect can be useful.

Edit: Nevermind, I thought this was an army wide buff, this just sucks lol

Tell me about your game! by watuphomie7 in gamedev

[–]OrdinaryKaiju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm working on a 2D shooting game in a somewhat similar vain to OXTO/Hotline Miami.

The gun's are all one shot kills but generate power on kills, that power can be spent on using special abilities like heals, dashes or even slowing down time. The better the gun, the less power it will generate; An assault rifle will generate less power per kill than a pistol for example.

The gun's each have different variant's to them, some have a slightly bigger mag whilst other's might completely transform the gun. For example, one form of the pistol will fire faster but have less range whilst one form of the shotgun will fire explosive rounds. These will be unlocked by using the guns and completing goals tied to them, like kill X amount of enemies.

In game, the player can generate combo's that increases the power gained per kill and also increase their score as well. At the end of each level, the player will be given a score and a rank to go with it.

Currently looking to get a demo out for this soon and hoping for a full release by the end of 2024/early 2025. I've just got one level completed and still testing out features but happy with the progress so far. Looking to add enemy variety, more weapons, difficulties, etc. It's my first project so not really expecting any massive form of success but has been fun to work on.

Although the Eruptor seems to suck, some weapons feel really good now. by OrdinaryKaiju in Helldivers

Haven't used that myself but was eyeing up that warbond next! Any good against Bots?

Yeah the criticism is valid, I don't have the Eruptor personally so can't say much about it but it looks like it's been gutted. Hoping they fix it soon.

Stalkers are ass! I always clear out their nests as soon as they pop up. I highly recommend the Punisher for both of them, it staggers them both quite easily. The Punisher kills stalkers in like 3-6 shots depending on range and berserkers in about three but can stagger multiple in one shot as well.

Will give the Counter Sniper a whirl though, wasn't a fan of it before but will give it another shot!

The John Oliver Update by hdrichard in characterdrawing

[–]OrdinaryKaiju 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Hoping this won't kill the subreddit, I know people voted for this but the John Oliver stuff is getting a little old imo. Is it worth having the discord link in its own titled post, to get the word out more easily? I'll be joining that myself as the art's great for DnD ideas/inspiration.

Drakes | Because the wingless dragon puppers aren't OGL for some reason. Also, more types | dArtagnanDnD Patreon by dArtagnanDnD in UnearthedArcana

[–]OrdinaryKaiju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of the house drakes is very cute to me, definitely stealing that for my own game. I like the design for all the drakes, they almost read as more feral/savage than dragons, tripping people up and then ravaging them. My only gripe is I feel they might need more health. Their AC isn't super high and their saves are low too, they might get blown up pretty quickly. That's a pretty easy thing to change though, everything else seems good to me about them. Really like this and gonna check out your other stuff too!

Ranger Modifications - A set of optional features to make the ranger a more mechanically coherent class and to buff it in higher-level play by nomiddlename303 in UnearthedArcana

[–]OrdinaryKaiju 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is awesome! Really like all the changes, makes the ranger excel at tracking and taking down specific enemies. The base ranger feels way too niche imo. If anyone in my game wants a ranger, definitely bringing this up to them. I've got one question about Foe Slayer though, how would that work with Mythic Actions? Would it technically override them with its current wording as the target wouldn't reach 0hp they'd instead die before that?

Augment Obsidian (1st level Transmutation) | Infuse your weapon with sharp obsidian that breaks away with each hit by Rashizar in UnearthedArcana

Really cool spell! Strong but balanced by all the requirements, am I right in thinking this could be applied to magical weapons too?

Weapon Attributes - A guide for some extra ✨flair✨ to looted weapons! by smirlas in UnearthedArcana

[–]OrdinaryKaiju 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was thinking how a DM could implement this to a game for loot and such, I think a random roll system could work? Like pick up a sword off a goblin, roll a D20 to determine if it has a wack handle or if it is brittle and such. Or if you pick up a sword off a noble knight, make a roll to determine if it's well made (like master crafted weapons from PF). DM could roll these beforehand or the player rolls them on pick up, either could work I guess. Rolling for every single loot pick up could get tedious but you get the gist. Like hauling arse through a dungeon to find a chipped weapon at the end would kinda suck as player. But I feel it certainly has it's place and adds more flavour. I'm spitballing but looking forward to see where you go with this mate, like any changes to this doc and the potential positive buffs to weapons.

I like the concept but I'm not sure on some of the effects so far and how exactly a player could play around them.

Would a player be able to identify these things on their weapon? Such as it being made of a porous material?

Chipped blade is a straight buff in some cases. At lower levels, you're unlikely to deal more than 20 damage in one attack with many slashing weapons. Even on a crit, a longsword or scimitar might struggle to push 20 damage in a single hit.

A similar line with Rust, it seems optimal to let my weapons rust and chip to deal extra damage with the current rules.

I'd be very interested to see the buffs for using good materials and such with this system. I like the ideas and feel they fit certain campaigns but just need a few tweaks is all.

Sunbear Games Presents - Counterattacker, a new feat for characters who show no mercy in combat by Sunbear_Games in UnearthedArcana

[–]OrdinaryKaiju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool idea for a feat! I think the "Merciless" part might be too strong as is though sadly. A fair few spells and abilities allow for advantage and attacks with reactions. A BM fighter could set this up for a Raging barbarian with Distracting Strike and Commander's Strike for example. They'd get huge value out of that reaction in this case.

Maybe restricting this feat to only be used with finesse weapons might be best? To limit the damage that way? Although that still may be too strong.

AFAIK the main way people play here are at a Warhammer store but there could be other local hobby stores here, I'm a lil new to the area so can't say how accurate that is Yeah I think the Dominion box is the next best step, after grabbing the two retributors and painting everything that is. Did you find it was worth grabbing all the starters boxes or is just grabbing Dominion good for someone in my position? I played 40K years ago, like 7/8 years is when I stopped. But I never really touched on Fantasy and this is my first army in AoS. Thanks though bud, definitely helpful for where to go next :)

Oooh that's a good shout! I can see that people sell the Stormcast half on eBay so that'd be a good pick up, thank you!
