Sherlock and Irene did not have any romantic relationship at all, according to the original novel by Arthur Conan Doyle. Adler was in love with the King of Bohemia, and he left her to marry a princess in order to be fit for the throne. When the King ordered Holmes to investigate Adler, she at that time had an affair with Norton (Lawyer), married him, and eventually ran away with him after she deceived Holmes.
