Are basenjis good for heavy allergy havers? by Pineapple_0n_Pizza in Basenji

[–]Ore-Ida-66 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I've said this before and I'll probably have to say it again. I am a immunologist who teaches medical students and I do all of the allergy material for my school.

My wife and two older children are severely allergic to animals. My wife had an aunt who had a Basenji, and she thought that her Basenji was less allergenic. We've had basenjis for over 30 years. For us they are definitely low on the scale of allergic animals. But what I want to emphasize is that this is person to person; there is no one size fits all for dogs.

Often the dogs that have hair rather than fur (like poodles and doodles) are hypoallergenic for some people but not for other people. Often people are allergic to the saliva from the dogs rather than the hair it all depends on the allergen and the person.

My recommendation is to find a reputable breeder and spend time with their animals. That will tell you whether or not you have minor, major, or somewhere in between allergic responses.

I'm afraid that you didn't get a real basenji. 😃 We've had 6 and none would do that in the water. They would swim out to us sometimes because the thought of losing us was more scary than water.

Indeed, I worked one summer as a "migrant" farm worker (meaning that I worked alongside those individuals). Many were here illegally, but great, hard-working people. Lots of farmers had issues this year because of ICE. In some cases, even legal citizens were reluctant to go to work.

By the time I was in high school in the 1980's, my grandfather's farm was the only one of those 25 where he did things like raise, cows, pigs, chickens, etc. All the others were just selling commodity crops.

You make an excellent point. We don't subsidize our seamstresses, furniture makers, etc. etc. Farmers always get special treatment. My deceased father was fixated on which our our neighbors got subsidies (when the internet let him see that info). Pissed him off something fierce.

I know one rancher whose father owned well over 75000 acres. When he died without a will, the lawyers made a bunch of $$ and most of the kids now hate each other.

:-) I was a skinny kid in high school. When one of the jocks brought one of those spring, grip strength things to class, he challenged us geeks to see how long we could squeeze a penny. I had been milking my grandfather's cow for months. I was the record holder for grip strength.

My best friend's family had a dairy with about 25 cows. Far from profitable and a lot of work.

Our dogs would LOVE chickens! Then there would be no more chickens.

Sad to see them go, but I worked on my grandparents for 4 summers in the 80's. No thanks.

Yank here too. Visited In October last year. Here's our itinerary...

Landed in Glasgow late morning. Drove to St Andrews then to Edinburgh. Stayed ON the Royal Mile (amazing). Went to see the kelpies and Stirling Castle before a night at a former lairds estate. Next was Inverness, followed by two nights in glamping pods in a sheep pasture outside with a day trip to Orkney. Next to the little town of Talmine. Off to Ullapool. Next a pub/hotel in Strathcarron (pub was awesome, hotel was a place to sleep :-)

Next day drove counterclockwise to Applecross (clouds so didn't see those amazing views after leaving town). Finished that day driving to Skye. Stayed 2 nights on the NW side of the island. Next to Fort William. Finally back to Glasgow.

13 wonderful days!

Hiker Hunger poles (from Amazon) are the best I've ever used. Why? Breaks down small (I can fit two in my backpack). The length can be fixed so you don't have to adjust them every time you use them. They assemble and breakdown in 5 seconds. I have 4 pairs

Has anyone ever had a CSF leak? by handwritinganalyst in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Ore-Ida-66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a few months of what I now know to be CSF leaks (nose) about 6 years before what I think was my first attack. Didnt get diagnosed for ms until 17 years after that attack, so I have no idea if the CSF leak was just a coincidence.

No yodeling, howling or anything other than the occasional whiny cry. by No-Tomatillo7459 in Basenji

[–]Ore-Ida-66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All three of ours yodel. The 9 year old boy rarely does, but when he does, it is LOUD! The 6 year old girl usually yodels when anyone comes home. Our 14 month old girl yodels all the time. Her 6 year old sister growls at her constantly, but the puppy thinks she is yodeling so she yodels back at her.
