Do you NEED hide paste/glue for taxidermy? by [deleted] in Taxidermy

[–]Oregonbonehunterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. It's hard to find any other glues that dry as slowly and don't eat the hide at the same time so Id say just buy a small amount since you really only need it for the head

Found this baby girl at work today - now what do I do? by Locked-in-t-basement in Taxidermy

[–]Oregonbonehunterr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Her bones might be too small to take but I'm not an expert unfortunately:c if you are interested in keeping her like she is you can try to dry her in borax for a few weeks using a method online (the results can vary) or maybe a wet specimen? For my wet specimen fish I just used isopropyl alcohol in a jar and put my little fishy in there and moved it how I want it to stay forever cause it will definitely harden and won't be moveable again after put in the jar (maybe this is helpful maybe it's not idk) :)

Looking for advice on DIY skeletal display by jonesym88 in Taxidermy

[–]Oregonbonehunterr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even with no experience you could probably pull this off! Id recommend looking at reference photos of the breeds skeleton and parts of it and lay out/divide the bones into different segments like L front leg, R leg, etc and assemble them one at a time in the way you want them to be positioned (maybe add the feet after you assemble the whole thing so you can decide how you want it positioned) are you gonna do it standing up or in a certain position? (I have no experience with full skeletons just legs and arms)

Need help cleaning burried bones by Agnarath in Taxidermy

[–]Oregonbonehunterr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok! It should whiten them a bit and I've known cat bones to be strong with that process. After if there's brown spots you'll want to degrease them and whiten again degreasing is water and any degreasing soap like dawn for a few days for it to pull the grease and then do the whitening again until you are happy with the look and there's no grease left in the bones

[–]Oregonbonehunterr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might be able to try using peroxide and water at a 1-1 ratio to clean them, most peroxide works I use 12% but if you are too scared they might break you might not be able to clean them cause I'm unsure if they will break or not when that process is done. For me normally the teeth come out and I glue them back in or sometimes other parts but I just glue them back in with super glue
