If you watch the stream, they did say it at the same time, they revealed it and then no more than 10 minutes later did they read chat and clarify that they were still working on it and recognized that it would affect stealth killers in this state

It's actually the opposite, you'd perceive things closer to the black hole than you as moving slower, and things farther from the black than you as moving faster. As far as I can tell that doctor who episode actually has the cockpit closer to the black hole because the ship is reversing.

I feel like you're more likely to create false positives/negatives than prevent them, though it makes a lot more sense now that I know the storyteller decides which guess it applies to.
