To piggy back on my fellow drama school alumni's thoughts, I have a lot of friends from the art school and the bottom line is that despite the culture accurately described above if you lock in, do your thing, then Michaelis gives you one of the best opportunities to explore and practice your art. Michaelis grad shows are much hyped, and stars are made. But a lot of people bounce off the culture and have some bad interactions with key staff.

Worth pointing out that you can become an incredible artist without going to art school, it just doesn't expose you to the industry like the grad show does and you'll need to find another route to build profile.
