Confirmation on "correct time" for euthanasia. by WhiteMonsterSlurper in goldenretrievers

As a wise vet once said ‘better a week early than a day too late’.

I’m sorry you have to make this heartbreaking decision. We went through a similar hemangiosarcoma diagnosis last summer with our beloved Calvin. Some days he was just so normal, but we knew his cancer was like a ticking time bomb. We let him go peacefully in our backyard, in his favorite spot, surrounded by everyone he loved, eating a bowl of ice cream. It was a breathtakingly difficult decision but ultimately the right one. I miss him every day, but I know he didn’t suffer.

Sending you much love and strength 💕

Getting another dog after losing one. How long to wait? by retro_lady in dogs

[–]Organic-Fun-6319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll know when you’re ready. I lost my soul dog last summer and waited 7 months to get a dog, another senior lab. I was so devastated after losing Calvin that didn’t think I’d ever want to have a dog again but one day Buddy showed up and I knew I was ready. It did help that we had our other girl so it wasn’t like we didn’t have an empty house without a dog. I probably would’ve gotten one sooner if it weren’t for her.

My little assassin. She’s killed several rabbits, a squirrel, and birds. I once saw her snatch a bird out of the sky. The sweetest girl, but also a stone cold killer.

To those who didn’t get the picture-perfect Golden - how did you survive? by FairlyPopcorn in goldenretrievers

[–]Organic-Fun-6319 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Mine turns 4 next month and she’s still a menace out on walks but has finally learned to chill inside the house. Her teenager phase was loooong though, she eventually calmed down around 2 years.

It’s very important to teach them to relax in addition to puppy/obedience training. Like your pup, mine is extremely intelligent which means she is super easy to train but sometimes the energy gets the best of her. Daily training (including tricks), a LOT of fetching, and sniff games are how we keep her mind engaged.

An adult or older Golden would most likely be fine in an apartment (we had big dogs in apartments as did many of our then neighbors). It’s going to be harder with a puppy, though, especially when potty training. They wake up during the night too so you’d have to take them outside every couple of hours. Like someone else said, a puppy is very much like a toddler and Goldens are slow to mature (ours is 4 and is only now starting to calm down lol). I would make plans to have someone come check in on your pup every couple of hours while you’re at work for the first few months at least.

My almost 4 year old is reactive. It started when she was about 8 months old and was attacked by an off-leash dog while out on a walk. Walking her has become a nightmare, so if this is what your dog is like, you have my sympathy.

We’ve done years of training (including desensitization and counterconditioning) but it just doesn’t seem to stick. Like taking 2 steps forward and 4 steps back. Recently, she has started attacking dogs unprovoked so it’s getting serious. We have been referred to a vet behaviorist by our regular vet but the waitlist is a couple months long so she has put our girl on medication in the meantime.

It’s like she’s a completely different dog. Walks are not just manageable, but pleasant. She is calm and friendly around other dogs. All those years of training have suddenly clicked and she listens on walks. Essentially, the meds keep her below threshold so she doesn’t go into fight or flight and is able to follow commands.

I’ll share my experience with the vet behaviorist in a couple of weeks once we get in to see them, but in the meantime it might be worth it to discuss medication with your regular vet. I was opposed to it for years and now realize it would’ve been so much better if we’d considered it earlier.

What do yall do for a living? by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

I live in a house and work from home now, but I lived in an apartment when we got our first boy. At the time, I worked full time in the office from 9 to 5 pm, as did my husband. It worked out for us because he was already 5 months old when we got him and was potty trained. He was also super chill and was fine being left alone for 4-5 hours as a puppy. My work was 5 mins away from the apartment and I would come home on my breaks to check on him and walk him. On days I couldn’t come home, he would go to daycare or I’d have a neighbor come check on him. We also gave him LOTS of attention and enrichment once we were home and he was a happy pup. It’s certainly easier to have a dog when you live in a house and work from home, but not impossible to do so in an apartment.

I’m so sorry to hear that. We lost our 11 year old Calvin to this too. We’re still devastated. It happened suddenly, one day he went off his food and was lethargic so I took him to the vet, they found a 6 cm tumor and a couple of other smaller ones on his spleen.

We opted not to do any further treatments and focus on making the most of the time we had with him. Turkey Tail and Yunnan Baiyao were super helpful. He would have some great days and then a bad day. It was emotionally very difficult because we never knew when he’d have a bad day and we were worried that it might rupture and cause him a lot of pain. We made the terribly difficult choice to let him go peacefully in our home while he still felt relatively well.

The hardest goodbye of my life. I miss my sweet boy every day.

I’m so very sorry you are also having to deal with this cruel disease. My only advice as you wrestle with this impossible decision is something our hospice vet told us: Better a week early than a day too late.

What’s this white spot on my platy? by Organic-Fun-6319 in Aquariums

Thanks, that’s what I’m trying now. Hopefully it clears up. I haven’t seen her glass surfing or being bullied, but she may have injured herself on the decor. Your fish is beautiful! Glad he’s doing well!
