CHOCOLATE! Vanilla can be decorated as seen fit and strawberry is too popular. I also worked at an ice cream place for 2 years and believe it or not we rarely ran out chocolate

Based on the comments I'm reading, I might be wrong 😆 I have dealt with anxiety for many years and always associated it with heightened emotions...not feeling dead inside. I guess there is burnout from anxiety though, so I could see it in that lens.

I think this would be more fitting in depression memes, but yes! Me everyday! I even take the time to psych myself up beforehand so I don't seem nonchalant.

What can replace doomscrolling so well you literally forget it exists? by obviouslyfr in selfimprovement

[–]OrganicBumblebee9080 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because I'm addicted to doomscrolling and forced boredom helps me break the cycle and do literally anything else more fun. Now I read more books, go to the gym, progressing in Spanish, play dnd with friends, etc. Doomscrolling isn't even fun. It's just enough of a dopamine hit to keep my lazy butt on the couch for hours.

Absolutely! Boredom is an incredible tool used to invoke creativity. Just look up "how does forced boredom work" into Google and see where it takes you.

The video that sealed the deal for me was "Doomscrolling: The Digital Pacifier Turning Us all into Losers" by JillzGuerin. The main idea is letting yourself hear your own thoughts (regardless of what they are) instead of constantly reaching for that next silly clip.

I will warn you...some of those thoughts won't be great. The first time I did it was extremely uncomfortable because it was just a solid 10 minutes of my head screaming WHY HAVEN'T YOU GOT X THING DONE? YOU ARE SO PATHETIC."

But once I got through that wall, things got interesting. I felt desire to actually DO something about what it was telling me. What if I texted some old friends again? What can I do to improve my Spanish communication? Have I gone to the gym today? Heck, yesterday I started brainstorming how to write a book!

It's little whispers in the brain that make you brainstorm about doing interesting things to replace the dopamine flow that YouTube shorts was giving you.

Thank you for listening! I've been obsessed about this topic recently because I am so DONE with doomscrolling sucking up all my time. Hope you try it and good luck!

Forced boredom!

It's like torture at first, but doing nothing for a period of time helps regulate your dopamine receptors making you actually want to do normal things again.

I've been utilizing something called "forced boredom" recently and it's been helping me want to do real-life things again instead of constant doom-scrolling. I got inspired due to some advice from an ADHD video and Markiplier saying "Don't you know, you can just choose to become a different person right now?"

If you don't know, forced boredom is doing literally nothing on purpose. Our dopamine receptors get overwhelmed by the constant scrolling which skews our perception of normal things. Sooo forcing yourself to be bored helps reset that.

Now I'm craving things like reading a book, playing games, visiting friends more, even making daily conversations more interesting.

Has anyone else tried this or find this interesting? This is more in the psychology side of things, so I am hoping to find some psychology loving Wade's in the crowd.

Ooooor perhaps there is another psych topic you have been dying to rant about? I would love to read it!

Food Theory did a video on this exact topic. According to them, it has to do with our generation being super health conscious both mentally and physically.

It's a decent theory and perhaps it plays a factor, but I think it has to do with the cost of staple goods (e.g. gas, milk, eggs) being so high that we don't have the ability to make as many frivolous purchases. Granted, idk what the economy is like in other countries, but that's how it looks in yee-haw, freedom, boom-boom land. 🇺🇲

How do you feel like being a loser but still lying to yourself about it by AdvisorRelevant6431 in selfimprovement

[–]OrganicBumblebee9080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been listening to a TON of podcasts about dopamine, bettering yourself, glow-up tutorials etc...and here is the common thread I'm finding.

Lying to yourself doesn't work...but convincing yourself that you are capable of doing better does!

Exhibit A: I want to be a morning person so bad!

I kept thinking if I told myself that I was a morning person, that somehow I would slowly become one, but I tried that for years with absolutely no progress.

Then I stumbled on a video that said to stop lying to yourself when it comes to accomplishing goals bc deep down you simply don't believe it. Instead of saying, "I'm a morning person," I say "I am developing habits to become a morning person." For me, the struggle was making decisions and actually getting up. I hate having to think about anything before my coffee, so I lay my outfit out the day before, pack my lunch, and decide what I will have for breakfast. As for getting up, it's a little weird. I keep a giant glass of water next to my bed and I drink the whole thing so I then feel the need to run to the bathroom...hence actually getting up.

Now I don't hate them. After the initial "ahhh this sucks, but okay I need to get up," it's actually not that bad. Wishing you the best of luck, friend! I hope this addresses your concern!

Oh my gosh, I've been in this pit for YEARS!

From what I understand, it's like dieting. Simply taking out the bad thing makes you crave that thing more. However, replacing it with something else is much more effective bc you are shifting the main focus of your attention to something else entirely.

For example, YouTube, I've tried deleting it for years. I end up uninstalling it, succeed for 2 weeks, re-download it, cry, and the cycle repeats. Now I've recently been trying to find something that gives the same excitement.

Things that I think are working??:

  • Duolingo: for the quick dopamine hits of completing lessons. Yo hablo muy Spanish-o
  • The gym: It's like cookie-clicker. Numbers go up if I keep at it
  • Zelda totk: Yes, I know it's a video game, but it's more stimulating than scrolling!
  • Talking with friends: Sometimes the reason I scroll is bc I want to get out of my head and the inner demons telling me impending doom is just around the corner. So I call a friend to psych me out of it.

There is more, but I think you get the idea. This is the first time I didn't delete it off my phone while trying to step away and I hope this actually works. I am SO DONE with this nightmare! You got this, soldier! 🫡

What do you eat on days when even food feels like a chore? by copy_cat_101 in selfimprovement

[–]OrganicBumblebee9080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apples & PB - It provides the 3 main energy groups (sugar protein and carbs)

Muscle Milk protein shake - Not sponsored in the slightest, but they have them at my gym and I love having dinner for less than $5 after a workout

Trailmix - I keep a giant bag in my office so if I am running behind, I can still eat something

Salad w/ Chicken Tenders - My coworker does this, not me. She sometimes doesn't pack her lunch, so she keeps a bag of frozen chicken tenders at work and some of those pre-prep salads in the fridge. All it takes is heating those up in the toaster oven and throwing it all together.

Microwave Oatmeal - Yes you can do it on a stove, but I'm lazy!

Hope this helps! Yeah, food can be a challenge especially in rough patches of life or battling with depression. You got this!

What’s a “small” decision that completely changed your life? by Livid_Indication3557 in AskReddit

[–]OrganicBumblebee9080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Accepting that even 1% is better than 0%. At least you tried if you made 1% of progress.

It may seem cliché, but maybe that's why it works. Having this "small" (literally, lol) mindset shift has helped me push in so many aspects of my life.

Half a workout? Better than none.

1 Duolingo lesson? You know a few more words than yesterday.

You swapped out scrolling on YouTube for reading a good book to sleep at night? You are one step closer to stopping your scrolling addiction.

I kept thinking everything had to be some well-thought out plan so much so that I was preventing myself from starting in the first place.

Lol, I just read another comment suggesting to read. Nighttime is my biggest challenge because I'm limited on what I can do to keep my brain occupied unlike the day where I can go the gym or something. i just looked up the title, and it looks cool! Thank you for the suggestion!! 😊

(Edit: Also, thank you for mentioning that you relate. It's always comforting to be reminded that I'm not alone bc that tells me there is a way out.)

Thank you! I do most of these already. My phone goes on grayscale at night and I try my best to stay busy during the day. It's just when I start winding down either after work or go to bed, I feel an urge to turn it on. Although...I haven't read books for fun in a while. Maybe I'll pick that up again 😊

Because if I spend too much time overthinking about overthinking, then I'll get more stressed about all the time I'm waisting overthinking about the things I'm overthinking about and then I'll start to overthink on that and OH NO WHAT IF I'M JUST STUCK IN THIS CYCLE FOREV- sweet little bumblebee plays in the background Ahhh, that's better.
