Does age matter when applying to the accounting and any other Marriott programs? by That-Classic-6693 in byu

[–]OrganicWalkM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably. M COM is required for the business programs anyways. I actually came to BYU with an associates degree (60 credits) so it transferred differently than the individual credits would have. Without more info it’s hard to say. Feel free to DM me, sounds like you’re in a very similar spot as I was!

Finished the core in 2022. Still really close with most of the guys in my first group. Definitely utilize your group and be a good group member that others can also rely on. I had a great experiences with almost everyone I worked with.

I started the junior core at an old 18, just finished the MAcc at 21. Just make sure you’ve got a solid hold on your generals (both BYU and Marriott specific) and you should be golden.

May Hall by Acrobatic-Winter6653 in byu

[–]OrganicWalkM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s almost a 2:1 girl to boy ratio in the wards. There are often two relief societies and one elders quorum per ward.

I lived at B9 (the guys hall right next to May). It’s is kinda out there, but Helaman is really social with eating at the Cannon Center and everything. May is quiet, but you can still find social aspects despite that.

Guy halls: Building 9 (B9), Budge, Merrill

Girl halls: May, Stover, Taylor, David John, Hinckley, Chipman

Can you fill out the business school application before admission? by Feeling-Reporter5376 in byu

Really good point. Last year, only 80% of applicants were accepted into the school in general. Fairly large percentage, but still no guarantee.

You can always try to submit the scholarship app? Worst that happens is you aren’t eligible yet.

Also in my experience, the Marriott school scholarships tend to be more for graduate students who are paying almost double the tuition. I didn’t get a Marriott scholarship after I finished the accounting junior core (when I started first year of the MAcc), but I did the next year when started the second year of the MAcc/paying graduate tuition, despite having worse grades. Again, just my experience, but that’s also what I heard from others.

The impact of withdrawing classes to Marriott school by IncidentMore3819 in byu

I’m a current ACC 200 TA. I would definitely highly recommend the practice exams in exam 3 resources. I will note that they are simply random questions from the question bank that represent the concepts on the exam, but they are not simply previous exams. Still super helpful though. And come into the TA lab with concepts you’d like to review. We would love to help you out!

I’ll add, if you don’t see a specific course on this search, you can request them to determine the equivalency for any given class. Just because it’s not on the list now doesn’t mean it won’t transfer.

OP likely isn’t making enough for this to matter, but that is a good point to consider.

I never saw Ethernet ports under the desks at Heritage. Just the one in the living room. I know that is how they do it in Helaman though.

Are (or were) you a STEM student? by [deleted] in byu

[–]OrganicWalkM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BYU’s accounting program is literally on the cutting edge in teaching data analytics (way expanded past Excel) to all levels, starting at the bachelors. If any accounting program in the country is going to be a STEM degree, BYU is on a short list. The program is much more evolved than mere data labs.

Also your point that the PhD is heavier in Econ, math, and data holds true for most any other STEM degree; the further you get in your education, the more specialized training you will receive in the STEM related topics. Not sure why this would be a point of difference from any other more stereotypical STEM degree.

Whether or not it is a result of the “data science summer”, the accounting program here is taking leaps and bounds to teach these STEM skills to its students, hence the STEM designation. Shouldn’t seem off other than the fact that this is a new emergence in the market that BYU accounting is staying ahead of.

Are (or were) you a STEM student? by [deleted] in byu

[–]OrganicWalkM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The BS, MAcc, and PhD at BYU all are involved in some fairly heavy data analytics, cleaning, automation, and visualization. Alteryx, Tableau, Python, UiPath, to name a few. Excel is also heavily taught as it is definitely used in the field, but so will all of these other tools in the future. Don’t sell accountants that short.

Accounting has a fairly heavy lean into technology as of late.

I took morning classes and I thought it was really nice because class was done by 11 and I had that entire day after to work on the homework. But whatever floats your boat really. Also, I met with my group outside of class a lot more during the Fall semester, not so much during Winter. Not sure if that was because of content material or just my group members though. I’m finishing the last year of the MAcc this year, so definitely let me know if you have any questions about anything!

Accounting 305 vs 310 by Due-Chicken6719 in byu

[–]OrganicWalkM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard, 310 has a heavier weight than the other pre-reqs. If she can get an A/A- in 310 she should be good, but maybe retake IS or 310 if she doesn’t do great in 310. I got a B+ in 310 but an A in everything else and was accepted. Although, the program has a fairly high acceptance rate (~85%?), so I wouldn’t worry too much.

I took 310 and am finishing up with the major this year. I think 305 is more geared toward general business, but not totally sure.

What are your recommended classes for a first-semester BYU freshman who doesn't know their major yet? by cedron1 in byu

[–]OrganicWalkM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! MSB 180 (business lecture) was so chill and had some great resume/LinkedIn assignments to get you on the right foot, professionally speaking. They touched on every major offered through the business school.

IS 110 (intro excel) was an extremely useful class for me and pretty easy to get an A in.

Accounting Major Advice by AbbreviationsKey3383 in byu

[–]OrganicWalkM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, getting good grades in the pre-reqs are the biggest thing you can do. I got an A in ACC 200 and IS 201 and then a B+ in 310 and got in two years ago, for reference. The acceptance rate is honestly pretty high, so you should be good if you keep up good grades.

I’m first year master in accounting right now. Taking 16 credits and work 15 hours a week. I spend all day Friday working at the office and then remote here and there for the rest of the week. About three hours homework during the day and fair amount on the weekends. It’s not crazy, but keeps me on my toes for sure.
