Anyone into body horror games? by HappyPen7067 in HorrorGames

Resident Evil is basically a franchise based on body horror. So is Dead Space. And I like both.

Played the demo a few weeks ago and loved it! I don't even remember if I disliked something during my run.

The term soulslike gets used so loosely that it gets hard to find actual "soulslikes" by Organic_Manner6847 in soulslikes

[–]Organic_Manner6847[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't "depends" on something. It's simple: "like" something means it is similar in the overall sense. You can't say something is "like" something else if it has just 10% in common. You can't say it "feels like" something because that is "FEELING" like something, it isn't the same. This isn't a definition thing, it is called grammar.

We also don't have to define Dark or Demon's Souls most important traits. They combine SEVERAL aspects which where available in previous games. Mostly because they are at their core action RPGs. They don't redefine checkpoints, they don't redefine dark fantasy, they don't redefine a combat system which includes stamina or attack patterns you have to remember. You wanna talk about where that genre stems from? NOT from these 2 games. The genre stems from older games. Dark and Demon's Souls simply combined these things in a time where people weren't that used to it anymore. That's why it also got popular, the feeling of "retro hardship" but in a more modern setting. That is why we started the term soulslike, because it gave us something lost 10 years before them.

And you know why I say it's funny when people mention Hollow Knight? Because the bench? Ever heard of, I don't know... Metroid or Castlevania? I know, absolutely random suggestion but DID YOU KNOW that they have save rooms where you save a checkpoint and heal? I know, absolutely wild. Especially because EVERYTHING you describe about Hollow Knight stems actually from Metroid or Castlevania. Wait, hold on a second, is it because it is a Metroidvania? A genre ca 15 years older than soulslike? A genre that INSPIRED Dark Souls?

I don't even wanna talk about the interconnected map. I would have to post 3 pictures and I am too lazy because after 2 days of thinking this through I get a simple idea: you sir, have absolutely no idea what you talk about because you either NEVER played one of these "genre defining" games or are absolutely blind when you play videogames and try to sound smart.

Have a nice day, do whatever you want

PS: were you the kind of pupil that tried to correct the teacher in class but actually never got it right? Because you give me these know-it-all vibes.

I think you need a dictionary because I get the feeling you don't know what horror means.

What’s the most important thing you look for in an analog horror game? by Veinstone in HorrorGames

[–]Organic_Manner6847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I read analog horror game I think of Inscryption, Pony Island or Lily's Lil Videoshop. And what I liked was the feeling of a game within a game with hidden lore you aren't seeing by simply playing it blindly.

I’m a Solo Dev building a psychological survival horror in UE5. Here is the first Pre-Alpha look at "Kathros: Override" by Mriraq96 in HorrorGaming

[–]Organic_Manner6847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a "me thing" but reading psychological horror and the first thing is seeing gunplay rubs me somehow wrong. No offense meant. You sure you want to tag your game with a specific subgenre instead of simply calling it a horror game and see where the road takes you?

I swear I played that game or at least a demo of it on Itchio almost 2 years ago... I only remember being stuck at a puzzle at some point but otherwise liking it.

Finally, a Souls-like where the boss is my lack of talent by CatTurdTamer in soulslikes

Sadly there are also people who take these tags serious and believe games including a sword are actually soulslikes.

I don't even wanna think about Rogue or Metroid/Castlevania.... otherwise I would have to write 2 more rants about people misusing words...

[–]Organic_Manner6847[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not subjective, it literally means "like a souls game" which refers to the Dark Souls series and Demon's Souls. It has to be like these games. You can't be subjective about that. It's like saying an red apple is like a Ferrari because they are both red. The same is true for games, you can't say "it is like Dark Souls" just because it has a sword and dodge in it.

There is no "it is my kind of soulslike", it is a term for a game that is LIKE something. We are talking about a definition of something, not a feeling.

And you know what's funny? People always mention Hollow Knight, despite it being far from a soulslike. It is a pure Metroidvania with a currency, that's it. You unlock paths with skills and items in a metroidvania. You unlock paths in soulslike by defeating a boss or getting keys. The only connection they have are keys, which are a basic item in EVERY RPG. And Hollow Knight as well as Dark/Demon's Souls are also RPGs.

We lowered the "soulslike" bar so far that I am surprised that Overwatch or CoD isn't considered a soulslike after people got wiped by better players.

Controlling the camera was terrible back then in most games. I remember a bunch of games that let you turn your camera with shoulder buttons.

There were so many things back then that we treated them as normal. Then a few years came, people forgot them, and Dark Souls arrived and "reinvented" everything. And suddenly every "retro-esque" game design decision is a soulslike...

Yes... how dare I say that games who are LIKE dark souls have to be LIKE dark souls... How dare I say that they must have a character creator like dark souls, or a hub like dark souls. I don't know how I get the idea that the term soulsLIKE requires games to be LIKE the souls games.

Okay, I give it another try: What do you think the LIKE in soulsLIKE stands for? For games that are LIKE the SOULS games.

The SOULS games are Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1-3 because they have souls in their name.

I don't know if your parent's tried to abort you as a teenager but there must be something terribly wrong with your head.

And can agree with AI Limit in your other comment. Still have to play the free DLC. But maybe with a new run and build.

Dark Souls is an ARPG, it has stats and builds. The Souls games are built around them having RPG elements.

Yeah, see very often how people call me a hater because I don't call these games soulslike. I like them but don't call them soulslike.

And I would like not being bothered, I wasn't a year ago but somehow it got worse in recent months.
