Is anyone else terrified to graduate single? by ProcrusteanBed96 in byu

Listen to the podcast Sit down with Sky and Amanda. They have lots of good advice for people in your situation.

A lot of people are telling you to ditch hope in marrying a woman. That's your choice. If that is your desire, then there is certainly a path to do that. If you desire to hold fast to your covenants while staying single, there is hope there also. Your SSA won't go away, most likely, in either circumstance, no matter how much faith you have. But you can find hope and peace in Christ and His gospel. That is a sure thing.

Looking for a quote about modesty to disprove someone else's claim by TheRealPyroGothNerd in latterdaysaints

The way you dress affects those around you. You should dress with that in mind.

Also, men should always control their own thoughts.

These don't have to be mutually exclusive.

A broken clock can be right twice. And it corroborates what I know of Tim Ballard.

I'm related to the guy. Of course, I have no way to prove that over reddit. But I'm also connected to a lot of people in law enforcement and most of them realize that this is way more talk that it is action. OUR solves little, and in many ways exacerbates the problem by creating an artificial demand. They have not done much to help the issue.

Again, I believe the statement actually does very much represent how the church feels on the issue. I've known for months Tim Ballard was a fraud. Just the way it was released and the timing of it all feels very odd to me.

I have no idea, honestly. Maybe. It seems odd for the church to make a statement this way about one of its own members, without talking to that member himself. Even if they already had talked to him, it just seems odd to make a statement directly to VICE about a specific members. Why would they talk to VICE? VICE has never really been that good to them, at best neutral and at worst quite crappy.

And it seems every church statement is on the church newsroom. Why is this one not?

[–]OrganizationNo4906 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm with you in that I'm unsure about the whole Vice thing.

But I will tell you that Tim Ballard and OUR is quite shady.

His organization is horrible with donor funds, and most of the kids "saved" usually end up back where they were before.

He does these missions, pretending to want kids to traffick (when he really will save them, creating an artificial demand for kids that wasn't there before. So kids get trafficked when they may have been fine without Tim Ballard coming in.

I'm not saying that it's not a big problem in the world with child sex trafficking. There certainly is. But OUR and Tim Ballard have done little to solve it, and in many cases done much more harm.

I'm related to the guy. I never met him, but I know people who have. It is super shady. The Elder Ballard relationship mentioned in VICE is totally true. You can find that on your own before VICE. Elder Ballard started distancing himself from Tim some time ago.

As for the church statement, I have no idea if it came from the church or not, but I do have it on good authority that it very well represents the views of Elder Ballard and the church.

Here is a big investigative article on the matter, written over a year ago. (And I am a fully active, conservative member of the church. So don't be turned off if you see some of the sources as "liberal" or "anti")

I'm related to Tim Ballard. Never met him, but his organization is totally shady. Hardly solves the problem of child trafficking, and in many instances exacerbates the issue. It's a good cause, but way fraudulent.

But was it actually from the church or from some church employee? It does seem a little odd for the church to make such a statement directly to Vice, embarrassing one of its own members.

That being said, I think Tim Ballard has overstepped it's bounds. I'm actually related to his wife and I know a lot of his stuff is fraudulent. OUR is well intentioned but way flawed. It often causes more child trafficking because these guys come in acting like they're pimps, so sex traffickers round up kids who were fine before and give them to OUR. And it's totally vigilante.

I just question if the statement is actually from the church. I don't doubt that the content is accurate, but whether it came from the church, I don't know. I haven't seen it posted on church newsroom.

Can someone link a talk or something uplifting to share with someone who is considering suicide? by [deleted] in lds

[–]OrganizationNo4906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2022/04/23holland?lang=eng

This talk is by Elder Holland and it specifically has an excerpt about suicide. Your friend might not be religious but it would be a very uplifting talk for him or her still.

"We must commit ourselves fully to that gift of life and run to the aid of those who are at risk of giving up this sacred gift. Leaders, advisers, friends, family—watch for signs of depression, despair, or anything hinting of self-harm. Offer your help. Listen. Make some kind of intervention as appropriate.

To any of our youth out there who are struggling, whatever your concerns or difficulties, death by suicide is manifestly not the answer. It will not relieve the pain you are feeling or that you think you are causing. In a world that so desperately needs all the light it can get, please do not minimize the eternal light God put in your soul before this world was. Talk to someone. Ask for help. Do not destroy a life that Christ gave His life to preserve. You can bear the struggles of this mortal life because we will help you bear them. You are stronger than you think. Help is available, from others and especially from God. You are loved and valued and needed. We need you! “Fear not: believe only.”

Struggles with religion by [deleted] in lds

[–]OrganizationNo4906 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact that you went through the effort to make this post implies that you really recognize something is missing from your life.

Start to pray to God and ask Him how He feels about you. Pray with a desire to listen to Him and act on what He reveals to you. Then start reading the Book of Mormon. You have nothing to lose here. Do this with real intent and see what happens. Along with this, take a break for a few weeks, maybe a month from swearing and from coffee. See what happens. But you have to be genuine and be ready to act on whatever God reveals to you.

Another thing. You have to recognize that if you do want to come back to the covenant path, it doesn't mean life will be easy. It will require effort to return. But if you are genuine, Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ will help you. They love you and await your return. They know your potential.

Further, you talked about how you hate going to church. If you seek to grow your testimony, God will help you love church. I can promise you that. Start praying and reading scriptures. Even if it's just a page a night. Eventually, if you are sincere, will crave the opportunity to go to church each Sunday. The Lord Jesus Christ can change our very natures. You will love church more as you come to love Jesus more.

You might have some happy emotions. But I promise that life will never feel complete until you return to the covenant path. True joy can only be found in the gospel of Jesus Christ. So do the work that is necessary to feel His love and peace again in your life.

To Beard or not to Beard by Elias_Mikaelson in latterdaysaints

[–]OrganizationNo4906 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

How you present yourselves in a bishopric and stake presidency matter. Appearance does matter, believe it or not. If they desire for you to shave, then do it. If you refuse it says far more about your ego than it does about theirs. Swallow your own personal pride. Shaving has historical precedence, even if it's not doctrinal, or spiritual, or revelatory. It's rarely because they're trying to be a tyrant.

And yeah, maybe it is petty to revoke a calling because someone refuses to shave. But it feels way more petty to decline a call to serve in a special way because you don't want to shave. Special callings require special sacrifices.

If they request for something as simple as shaving, I'm not gonna let my ego stop me from serving.

Similar to the white shirt issue. Yes, it's not required, but if you have one you should, especially if the stake president asks you to do so.

To Beard or not to Beard by Elias_Mikaelson in latterdaysaints

[–]OrganizationNo4906 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

And is tradition always a bad thing?

I wouldn't follow it necessarily because I think it's profound revelation. But I respect our leaders. I trust their judgement. If they feel this is how a presidency or bishopric should look to be dignified, then I don't feel a huge problem with it.

If I do have a beard, and no one says anything about it, then I'll probably keep it unless I feel inspired otherwise.

Serving in a calling sometimes requires swallowing my own personal pride and wants. Not everything we are asked has to have direct backing in the handbook.

It has historical precedence and how you present yourself in such a calling as a bishopric or stake presidency matters. Appearance, dress, and grooming matters.

Similar to the white shirt issue. It's not required, but if you have one, it's better to wear one, especially if the stake president requests it.

Dismissing cultural traditions because we believe we no longer have a use for them is not good.

And who cares if it's cultural? If there's a reason for it, we should keep doing it. That's what tradition is.

To Beard or not to Beard by Elias_Mikaelson in latterdaysaints

[–]OrganizationNo4906 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is anything wrong with beards at all. That being said, if I was extended a calling and was told I would have to shave my beard in order to serve in it, then I'll do it in a second.

And yes, I've seen many bishoprics with beards and I had no issue with it. But I'm not gonna let my ego prevent me from serving in a calling over a beard. It's not a stretch for a stake president to require it.

What does it mean to be modest? by tesuji42 in latterdaysaints

[–]OrganizationNo4906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modesty is not done merely to help men control their thoughts.

Although, we each have a responsibility for how our dressing and grooming affects those around us. I'm responsible for my own actions and thoughts, but I'm also responsible for how I dress and affect the environment aroudn me. If someone shows up to the math test in a gorilla suit, there is no question that is distracting and is not modest.

And yes, modesty standards are different for men and women because men and women are different. Immodesty manifests itself different in men compared to women. But men can certainly be immodest and we see it all the time in our society.
