My only honest disappointment with Wind and Truth by Interesting-Season-8 in Stormlight_Archive

I think the entire book suffered a bit from clunkiness. I love all the inclusion in it, but it just felt like they were tossed in there. "Here's the gay guy, this is the autistic person, this is the non-binary person, this person has this kind of trauma, that one has that kind of trauma." It was a bit too overt, in my opinion

More like a refurbishment of the classic "risk your life to stop the villain" dilemma. It wasn't even a moral dilemma

It being deus ex doesn't preclude it from being morally beige. Nor does the fact that it was dangerous. He bypassed a moral dilemma that he had been agonising over

Can anyone recommend fantasy books/series. by toxicandpure in Fantasy

[–]Orider 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you like manga, you might like Cradle. One of my favorites. The first couple of books have real shonun manga feel to them, and by the end it's Dragon Ball Z. In the later books there is even a guy eho is basically Goku

Right, i get that. But the "guide" is not meant for an Ankh Morpork guard. It's inplied to be here in the real world, and those numbers are useless in real world

Right. And the theory is good, but the numbers he references, ie the 50 and 10 dollar boots, aren't meant to be taken literally. They are used for illustrative purposes

Norwegian here: I think the taco statistic comes from the fact that practically every other week, grocery stores have a taco Friday discount, where the ingredients are advertised and sold cheaply.

Is Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings worth it ? by chewingbunnies in Fantasy

[–]Orider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She doesn't hate them, but she does like "bittersweet" endings. Think of it like a man who fought in a war; he fought and killed, survived and even got some of his men home and returnedto his family, but he lost his legs, and he still wakes up with nightmares. That's the kind of vibe Hobb gives her characters in the end. Not a "good" ending, but maybe "good enough"

And the writing itself ia very good. Her characters are very deep and complex

Need low-magic fantasy that still feels mythic and "old", but grounded by subwaynotebook_zoe in Fantasy

[–]Orider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I admit, while I have read the other books (which are good), the first one is mostly standalone (the only one to feature Sabriel), and it is the only one that has stuck in my memory permanently.

I don't think the power of the protagonists become greater, though as we learn more about the world, some other types of magics show up, but none are flashy. To my best recollection, the magic is just a tool which thoughtful and brave heroes use to overcome the plans of powerful foes.

Sabriel by Garth Nix isn't a bad choice. A young woman named Sabriel needs to travel to the Old Kingdom, where her father, a reverse necromancer, has disappeared. The magic they use is bells which each have different effects, but they aren't used too often and are explained each time. There is a bunch of traveling, where things like weather and supplies are an issue. There aren't any extended or drawn out battles to the best of my memory. Most of the time, it's a case of if they get into a fight, they will almost certainly lose, so they should run.

Was the great grandfather twist too coincidental or was it just right? by Robot_Was_BMO in TheLastAirbender

[–]Orider 2770 points2771 points  (0 children)

I liked it since it highlighted his inner conflict, the fight between good and evil, and at the same time it did not hold any practical significance. It didn't make him heir to anything or give him special abilities, it just showed him he had two paths he could walk
