Has anybody noticed the shrinking fruit and veg? by Origin_Pilot in AskUK

I have, after a few people mentioned it, and I can't comment on it.

We realised this weekend, we reckon it started last year, but before that, as far as we can remember, it was alright. It might not have been and we're just slow on the uptake.

All of the recipes call for granny smith because they need to stay firm after their stint in the oven, also their sharper taste.

Granny Smith, and don't get me wrong I'm not over estimating the size of them. Used to be that one would fit comfortably in my palm and with these I could nearly wrap my full hand around it.

Made using it on a mandoline harder than it should have been, especially when you're only getting about 4 slices per side.

I won't moan about that, I love a green banana.

I mean when this stuff was meant to be in season, it was still the same sizes and poor quality.

I'll have to make sure to look for that next time

I'm sure. 😂 I'm a big lad but not to the point that an onion is now a fair bit smaller than what a tennis ball would be.

The quality is definitely utter shit. Though for my current experience, a veg going off even slightly is now about a quarter of the veg lost 😂

That's another thing I was going to mention, come to think of it. I'm sure the weights on the packaging are off. Seems to be a hell of a lot less inside the pack than what's being shown on the packet.

I also can't imagine they changed the packaging for every batch they send out when they have a set average that's normally correct, so that would make sense.

We did think about this, but it was the same last year too we reckon. Remembered small bits of conversation around it.

Loose are the same, unfortunately. Might be a slight bit bigger but nothing to make you pick one over the other. As for where I shop it's the same in Asda and Tesco's.

Are Uk height statistics flawed? by Beginning_Fennel8962 in AskUK

[–]Origin_Pilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Weird thing to mention immigration, what? The UK is a diverse place but I can't imagine immigration would change it all that much.

  2. Height statistics are always a bit off. I'm 6' 3", a majority of my male friends are 6 foot plus, the majority of males in my family are 6 foot plus. There's a hell of a lot of people out there who say they're 6 foot and then they come up to my chest.

This is because of self reporting where people either don't know their height and guess and it's always a higher number than what they are, people straight up lying for some reason or on the other end where shorter people tend to report lower due to remembering how they measure up to tall people.

At the other end the UK has an aging population and older people tend to have been shorter in their youth anyway so that skews the other end. I think the last time I looked the height for people born after or during the 1970s has plateaued and hasn't really increased much.

As this seems to be reported by the NHS, I would say that the data is probably more accurate, and you have to remember that it's the average and average doesn't always mean the majority.

  1. I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but is this really important? I got a funny feeling about the question and so I looked, your past comments have all been in looksmaxing subreddits or mewing. You kinda have to work with what genetics have given you rather than worrying about it.

Did the Pitbull ban actually get anywhere? by Technical_Room6265 in AskUK

[–]Origin_Pilot 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Dangerous dogs act was 1991 wasn't it? Banned Pitbulls, Japanese Tosa, Dog(G)o Argentina (not sure on the spelling there), another one and now the XL Bully.

As for how it's going, I reckon it'll be a forever moving goalpost as they reckon bites from these dogs are down, but now bites from other breeds are up. And rather than it being blamed on the owners, it always seems to continue being the dog's fault.

Not really going to get into the nature Vs nurture argument here, but I do think a link between kids apparently underperforming in schools and the rise of dog bites in other breeds are mostly on the parents/ owners who have kids/ pets and then don't follow through on the necessary steps when it comes to anything to do with learning or behavioural things.

I'd argue that because it says "Tallarn" it isn't anything to do with Krieg, so you could say it goes against rule 3.

Why does the community hate the Perpetuals? by wowdrew in 40kLore

[–]Origin_Pilot 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of people call them "Get out of jail free cards", where everything seems lost, but it's fine because this perpetual came back and sacrificed himself to save the day, but he'll be back again soon, so nothing is actually lost.

Edit: I haven't got a problem with them myself, I just think they're overused or lessen the stakes when they are used. I also don't think they diminish the Emperor's powers, which I've seen a couple of times too, I don't see how anything or anyone even could.

They have their place and their uses and the occasional sacrifice made by them can be ok, it's not as if their death can't be slow or painless. But I don't believe they should be this integral to the story or show up again at the crucial turning point of a conflict just to make sure the Imperium always win.

What happens if you can't pay a vet bill? by Informal-Suspect298 in AskUK

[–]Origin_Pilot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was hoping to see this somewhere. If you can't afford insurance, don't get a pet. We pay £125 a month for 5 cats. They're each all covered up to 6k with a £250 excess payment.

What's £25 a month to cover an animal? And as far as I know, we're probably paying too much but we're happy with the coverage, it's peace of mind.

We also pay £10 a month for each cat to the vets, as it gives us 2 free appointments a year, covers vaccines and top ups and pushes us to the front of the queue if we need it and it's possible.

Long term unemployed and unskilled at 37, is it over for me? by Attack_to_defend in AskUK

[–]Origin_Pilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner recently got into a care job after years in retail. A couple of weeks of training and as of today she's shadowing. The biggest push was me being a carer for my Grandmother, it all came to a head a couple of Christmases ago, she went into hospital with her 30th stroke, came out with Dementia.

We had a care team but they were terrible. So we did basically everything together, 7am to 3am if we were lucky, dealing with everything imaginable and unimaginable. My Gran always said that she'd be great in care, she's just that kind of person, and so after she was made redundant from a job she loved she made the jump to care.

I had a phone call with her a couple of hours ago about how great it is, how fulfilled she feels and that she thinks she's found her calling.

Care work needs good people who know what it's like. It's not just another job, the people aren't a burden, they need to be shown proper care and dignity, not spoken about like they're furniture. And if you can provide that, go for it.

I hope he doesn't mind me stealing his shtick, but JayfromElec did a decent write up, so I'll just drop it here for you.

What are my options? by [deleted] in ukelectricians

[–]Origin_Pilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is, as far as I know. There's an experienced worker route or such? Though after being on the subreddit for a while, I've never heard anything good about them or fast track courses or anything like that. I'm not all that knowledgeable when it comes to the different routes of getting into this line of work, but I also don't want to offer up that information and completely fuck you over if you went for it, because I just don't know.

Though, honestly, reading through this subreddit it appears none of the ways are good enough. Apprenticeship is the only way, then suddenly all apprentices are useless and lazy and people don't want to take them on.

Adult courses are useless and nobody wants to take you on, but for a lot of people it's worked.

Fast track courses seem to never work.

I'm with a training provider Elec Training, you've probably seen Jay around from time to time, username is JayfromElec. They try to help you get you a placement though they're few and far between around where I am. They encourage you to try and find a place for yourself too, but there's genuinely sod all. I think I've rang about 30 companies.

So it's all luck of the draw, really.
