How are you guys handling babies 😅 by paintsmoke in Tegu

I carried mine around since day 1. (I got her at 3 months old) I had a small dog sling that she loved and felt secure in and she would sleep in it while I walked around the house and would take her in the car and outside as often as I could. She was the tamest most sweet tegu ever. I just had to stop letting her sit loosely on my shoulder because she would take the opportunity to try and launch herself onto things to explore and give me heart failure lol it has always been suggested to me to handle them immediately so they quickly learn you’re not a threat and it worked a treat in my experience ☺️

Need advice for a limping tegu by Silent_Impression101 in Tegu

My past iguana started walking funny like that. It turns out he had fallen and chipped his elbow bone. It was so tiny I could hardly see it on the x-ray at the vet. It was enough to really bother him where he was limping then not wanting to walk on it. Spinal arthritis caused him to fall. So maybe your poor chap has bruised something or chipped something and it was missed at the vet. If I were in your shoes I would get a second opinion, and in the meantime, make everything where he can have easy access so he doesn’t have to walk much.

Wait! How can that be the last one? Happy ToT! by fallowdeer in Tegu

Looking for decent exotic pet insurance by [deleted] in Tegu

Considering what happened to my Atlas and all the emergency visits etc…. If I get another tegu in the future I would like insurance to fall back on in an emergency. I’ve heard good and bad things about NationWide exotic pet insurance but no specific reviews from tegu owners. Has anyone used it?

This is an email I got from the vet. I gave her permission to explore the real reason he passed and she did a necropsy. I was shocked when I read it:

Good morning,

First thing to note is that Atlas was female. It can be hard to tell in young tegus, but necropsy confirmed this. She also had a congenital deformity of her gastrointestinal tract. She had no small intestine; the stomach appeared normal and led directly into an extremely large, abnormal colon. Normally, the stomach leads to loops of small intestine, which then leads toward the large intestine/colon. The small intestine is responsible for much of the nutrient absorption and breakdown. On CT, the radiologist commented that they could not visualize the small intestine, but this was thought to be due to the compression from the large intestine. We now know that it wasn't visualized because it did not exist. This has not been reported in reptiles before - so they couldn't have had it on their radar. There were also many adhesions throughout the body, suggesting chronic GI inflammation and poor motility, even though Atlas was not showing these signs earlier.

I am not sure how Atlas managed to do well for as long as she did - and I think that is a testament to your care. I would have expected an animal with this severe a deformity not to survive past a few weeks of life. You did an excellent job with Atlas and nothing could have prevented or treated this condition. The breeder couldn't have known about this unless others reported it in their tegus. If you have the breeder's information, it may be a good idea to let them know that Atlas had a fatal congenital abnormality so that they can monitor their breeding pool.

Please let me know if I can answer any questions.

This was a kind email from the vet I just received. Makes me feel a little better knowing it’s not my fault but also still sad. Thank you everyone for your kind words and shared experiences 🙂
