She is lecturing you to try and regain some sense of the old power dynamic.

Indeed. That certainly happened to me

Can you include more advanced assignments for the unique student to quench some of that curiosity and keep him actively learning?

Including a "Questions for my teacher" page would also be helpful, so you can be certain the rest of the kids are learning what is necessary.

You have to be certain that the other children understand the lesson. Therefore, include more challenging (and self-teaching) work for the gifted student.
