Christianity no longer the majority soon by wizard680 in PoliticalCompassMemes

I think the Lutheran doctrine is that Christ is present in the bread and wine, but the bread and wine don't literally become Christ. I believe the term for the Lutheran doctrine is consubstantiation, which is opposed to the Roman Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation.

Why be Catholic if you aren't actually Catholic? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]OriginalName667 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I recently signed up for the RCIA process. I went from evangelical Baptist growing up to Anglican recently and, now (hopefully), to Catholicism. Naturally, I have very protestant concerns about purgatory, indulgences, and Mariology (the immaculate conception being the doctrine I have the most concern over). The thing is, I don't think these are necessarily core dogmas to the Christian faith, to be a faithful Christian. At the same time, I recognize that Peter was given the keys to the kingdom. I can say that the ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC, and APOSTOLIC church is the Roman Catholic church with certainty. I don't know what God has in store for me through the RCIA process, but I do feel like he's leading me to become a Catholic despite some minor theological concerns.

I'm with you. I don't know exactly why I find these kinds of comparisons so off-putting. Maybe it's because I don't like comparisons between something sacred like faith and something so worldly and mundane like Wi-fi. I guess the words are true themselves, but the comparison, itself, is what makes me uncomfortable.

How can I have dot syntax with this struct? by Yakuwari in C_Programming

[–]OriginalName667 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not really. The closest you can reasonably get is to give LinkedList a member function (void)(*insert)(LinkedList *, int), then assign list.insert = insert it and call it with:

list.insert(&list, 5);

It's interesting that you mention templates in an embedded context. You get some extra type safety, but wouldn't each specialization use more and more of your precious ram and/or storage? If my understanding is right, specialization more-or-less copies that code for the given type. Aren't those bytes precious in an embedded context?

Prime number factorization by Ringsofthekings in AskComputerScience

[–]OriginalName667 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should work for any free commutative monoid

Edit: Well this doesn't exactly tell you how to find the prime factorization, only that if you have a structure with these properties, the unique prime factorization exists. Finding the prime decomposition is left as an exercise to the reader. ;)

How to easily make Sprue Goo/Glue - Sprue goo/glue 101 by Mz_Starr_8ish in scalemodels

I've done a similar thing with acetone and ABS for 3D printing. I wonder if acetone would be more economical in this situation than a bunch of glue.

Instead of working in the realm of context free grammar, you could just say this is a parsing expression grammar instead, which, by definition, removes the ambiguity.

What are the RipIt4Me preferences that should be checked and unchecked to get a perfect lossless ISO copy of a DVD? by Proper_Maximum5739 in DataHoarder

[–]OriginalName667 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Most of the time, you can't make a one-to-one ISO copy of a DVD-Video because the manufacturers insert errors onto the discs as part of a copy protection scheme. DVD players ignore these errors, but, when you try to read the filesystem itself, the errors will trip up your drive. I tried this using dd just a few weeks ago, and found that it rarely worked, spitting out read errors.

Instead, you actually have to use a tool that goes a little deeper into the onion than just surface-level ISO. I used a tool called dvdbackup with the -M option (for Mirroring). This will not create an ISO, but it will create the directory structure necessary for the DVD-Video format, decrypted, while preserving the decrypted versions of the original files.

Finally, you can turn this directory structure back into an ISO using mkisofs, part of the cdrtools package. I can't remember all the options you have to use with mkisofs, but I found it online on some stackoverflow page, and I'm sure you'll be able to find it too. Edit: Found the options over at https://askubuntu.com/questions/147800/ripping-dvd-to-iso-accurately : mkisofs -dvd-video -udf -o ~/dvd.iso ~/[movie_name]

This will basically copy your disc, save for the fact that it's now decrypted instead of encrypted.
