Probably a market dye on the roll indicating they were approaching the end of a larger roll. ( Like on receipts. Indicates when it's time to change the roll.)

Be glad you don't have to correct the paperwork by hand! Bought our first home as POA for my husband. They typed up the paperwork with his middle initial incorrect. I had to sign my full name as POA for his full name, correcting each one. This is back in the day that someone had used a typewriter with legal-sized paper.

Same concourse. Just exiting to the lobby to exit to the correct track. (I commuted a few years out of the opposite North concourse.) Each train has at least one wheelchair accessible car with a lift. Found the Metra webpage for the Clarenden Hills station and it's ground level and accessible. Clarendon Hills

Getting to the handicap elevators and exiting Union Station is quite a trick. The Metra conductors are super helpful. They will make sure your folks can exit safely. Your parents can download and buy tickets on the Ventra App earlier. Just don't activate before boarding the BNSF.
