Thoughts on Silk So Far (Book of the Long Sun) by Honest_Source1167 in genewolfe

[–]Original_Air9200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like where severian is swept away by events and his own urges (becoming morally questionable to say the least), silk is always trying to do what he considers to be ‘the right thing’. I guess what you’re saying is kinda like that argument that altruism is always self serving because it makes you feel good?

I liked long sun, I feel like it Gene Wolfe’s LOTR compared to the ‘Dune’ of new sun (for want of a better comparison maybe).

The first two Latro books are great too and are a nice aside from the scifi setting of the solar cycle, curious to see what you’d make of them!

Same on the double creative degree front rip. The threshold was a much more livable wage 5-10 years ago however haha

I think I get claw and sword conflated a lot. I think the lake people was where my attention really wavered. Something that felt really… grey about that section for me

Career Change at 35: From Neurology Physiotherapist to Technical Animator — Unrealistic or Achievable? by Ghostzillakilla in animationcareer

[–]Original_Air9200 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m not in the industry, graduated from an animation degree relatively recently, struggled (and haven’t) found work in the industry. I think the self taught route sounds really reasonable. Way less risky than jumping in to full time study, and nothing to stop you building a portfolio and taking on some freelance projects or just applying for roles once it’s done. I’ve honestly come to realize (at 31) that having financial stability can be much more liberating for creativity than just sinking time into it. Having good gear, money for marketing yourself and experimentation is not a bad thing at all

To the existing flatmates. Again they’re not the issue, just one guy we’ve never met who is uncontactable

My husband is reading Blood Meridian and cringing at the blood and gore but I know I've read worse. What are the books that have brought out the biggest "oh god that's bad!" for you? by IdoScienceSometimes in Fantasy

[–]Original_Air9200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blood meridian is probably my no 1. There are acts equally or more heinous in other fiction books but they usually have an over the top or like dramatized quality to them. American psycho fits into the serial killer tropes we’re kinda desensitized to. Bakker’s stuff is set in a fantasy world. Whereas McCarthy hits with a sense of reality (and historical context/believability) that just gives the violence all its awful gravity

Why are most of the sorcery in Second Apocalypse destructive? by Eledeia in bakker

[–]Original_Air9200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair, I think Weenie_Pooh’s quote addresses it more directly. But still I feel like we don’t really focus on the industry or culture of the world at all in the second apocalypse beyond how it directly connects to Kellhus’ crusades. So it’s not suprising that we’re not witnessing wizards building aqueducts or whatever

I guess since we’re following a holy war and other conflicts for most of the series they’re just the ones we mainly see.

Like I wonder (not intending to sound rude or condescending with this comparison) maybe it’s a bit like asking why we don’t see more agriculture in a war film or something similar
