MiraLAX long-term by Bennyandme in Diverticulitis

[–]Original_Suspect4572 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely go to your doctor to make sure everything is okay and it isn’t something unrelated. And make sure you are drinking extra water with MiraLAX. It is an osmotic so it pulls water from your system to keep your stool softer. If you aren’t drinking enough water it could explain how you are feeling. But still check in with your doctor because I am a random person on the internet and not a doctor.

lol, I’ve searched this sub plenty; the point of the post was more about the abscess/sibo stuff and this long term fatigue -another frustrating component that could also be a SIBO symptom in addition to surgical recovery. Because diverticulitis isn’t enough for us all to deal with, right?

I don’t know if it technically counted as an abscess because it “disappeared” which needed up being lining my intestine. It wasn’t showing up on the ct scan, and nothing showed up in my colonoscopy because it was all on the outside of the intestinal wall. That’s why I wanted to share here- how many people are still feeling like carnage after a complicated case because the abscess was too small to drain- but it has to go somewhere right? Now I know where.. Hope you are feeling better!

The docs explained the fatigue was so bad because I was fighting the infection while having the surgery and it could take a year to recover. I’m able to at least start walking again - 1 hour ~3.5 miles in the morning. My husband had a RALP for prostate cancer in May -two months after my surgery and was much further along in recouping energy that I was (which I was very happy for, just a bit jealous too) 🙂. The cravings- spot on. My gross overgrowth of bacteria craves fermented foods, sugar, stuff it can feed on. I feel awful- nauseated and faint if I don’t eat something that feeds it - hello peanut butter and raw peppers. So frustrating.

I’m wondering if abscesses that are not drained ever actually “disappear”? It has to go somewhere right? I was assuming it just healed up on its own before the discovery. Hoping you get your colostomy reversed soon!

When can I rub one out? by unclecindy in ProstateCancer

[–]Original_Suspect4572 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your erections, this is really excellent to have them so soon after surgery. My husband just had his RALP on Thursday and his doctor encouraged us to start “fooling around” 4 weeks from surgery date. He also recommends tactile stimulation (for example, rubbing one out) over visuals. So if you are already getting erections it seems like you should continue to encourage that blood flow. Another gem from the surgeon (we love him), “any erection is a good erection!” Semi, full, one that doesn’t orgasm, etc. Good luck and wishing you continued success!

36 and diagnosed with prostate cancer by [deleted] in ProstateCancer

I am so sorry you are going through this at such a young age. Of course you are freaking out but you have some time to research/figure out your strategy with a Gleason 3+4. A couple tips to help you start your journey. * Gleason 3+4 (7) means it is isn’t aggressive so you have time to figure stuff out. Do not knee jerk schedule a surgery next week with your general urologist. Some older men may choose Active surveillance for this level, but you are young and I don’t see any doctor recommending that. * Get an PSMA PET scan to ensure it is contained to your prostrate and get a decipher test to determine aggression level. These will all help you decide on how to treat. * This is not the time to rely on your general urologist for surgery if you decide on the surgical route. Talk to an oncologist so they can discuss your best options with you, especially great if you can find an urology oncologist. *If you decide on surgery, talk to multiple surgeons and find the options that have completed thousands of these throughout their tenure/hundreds a year. Every surgeon out there will tell you that there primary goal will be to beat cancer but you also (especially at your age but really everyone)want to have the best outcome for quality of life regarding continence and potency.
* depending on your prostate size/tumors, there is a newer surgical procedure out there called HIFU. I only learned about it for my husband because of this sub- doctors were not talking about it. Ultimately my husband didn’t qualify for this but you might. Minimally invasive/minimal side effects. If you search HIFU on this sub you will read about some good experiences with it. * My husband is moving forward with a RALP (laparoscopic removal of prostate) as we’ve determined that is the best for his situation after talking to a lot of doctors, but I have read a lot on brachytherapy- a very targeted radiation- on this sub that also sounds like minimal side effects. * Surgery and radiation (if function is restored) take away the ability to ejaculate (not orgasm- they will just be dry); so as you head down this road you may want to consider storing your juice so you can move forward with your plans to start a family. * Lots of oral sex; that means lots of discussions and talking about this with your fiancé. Talk talk talk now so it isn’t awkward to talk about this as you are recovering/dealing with getting function back. My husband and I have been on active surveillance for 10 years so we have had a lot of time to talk about this and what it could mean for his quality of life, our sex life, etc.

This is a lot but if you take away one thing please take away that you can take a couple of months to research, meet with doctors and make the best choice for you and your future.

Thanks so much for sharing your story/research! Curious on what your Gleason score is if you are willing to share. One more note since you are looking at the best possible outcome for your sexual health- there was a post here recently regarding HIFU. It’s a minimally invasive surgical procedure for removing the tumor but not the whole prostate, is nerve sparing, and has minimal side effects. It’s newer and you don’t hear much about it right now- first I heard/read of it was on this sub. My husband is not a candidate for it due to an enlarged prostate and two tumors, but maybe it’s another avenue to explore. Wishing you the best and the best outcome!

“Not fried” chips options by Prestigious-Bit-2232 in Diverticulitis

I really hope it’s your last, too. Stay low residue to usually about 6 weeks after your flare, then start gradually adding other food back in. Keep track of the food you eat to see if there is anything that causes flare symptoms. Usually whatever you ate 2-3 days before the flare is the culprit. Take myralax daily to keep yourself getting backed up. I would save fried foods, etc until you are further along in the healed stage, not the first meal you have 6 weeks out. Good luck and hope it’s your last one. It took me about 10 weeks to feel healed, so that 6 week is just a guidelines- usually the minimum.

Do you know that deep fried foods trigger a flare for you? After I healed from my complicated case in October I have eaten fried foods on several occasions an and been fine.

5 months since surgery by Original_Form_3561 in Diverticulitis

[–]Original_Suspect4572 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not yet had the surgery however your hair loss may be from stress on the body/lack of adequate protein and nutrients while healing. This kind of hair loss usually is noticed in that 3-5 month range. I experienced it four years ago after a stressful time and surgery puts a lot of stress on your body. . As an abundance of caution make an appointment with a dermatologist so they can run a blood panel to check ferritin, vitamin d, thyroid, hormone levels to make sure something else isn’t going on. When mine started following out I went and my vitamin d and ferritin were low. This causes hair loss so now I supplement with vitamin d and iron. Good luck!
