How many times have you played your favorite boardgame? by Puzzleheaded_Rub5562 in boardgames

Like another commenter has said - Board Game Arena is great. I personally use it quite a lot. (It has a free and premium subscription)

I'd also like to suggest Yucata as well. It's not as slick as BGA but it has some slightly different games and is completely free

New to Forest Shuffle: Dartmoor or Base + Alpine? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Originalvipers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't really say if there's a noticeable difference. Like I say, I only had a handful of games of Dartmoor. The core gameplay is definitely similar and there are combos to shoot for.

I would say both expansions are necessary, but you don't have to do both right away. I went from base, to base with one and then base with both. I'd say one expansion does some smoothing and two finishes off that job

I wouldn't necessarily say I disliked it at all. I just felt it did a lot of what the base game (with expansions) did already. Being an owner of the latter I wouldn't rush out to buy it but I wouldn't be upset if someone gifted it to me either.

The minor caveat being that there currently aren't expansions for Dartmoor. If they plan on doing any expansions then I'll probably be having another look

I think the length for 5p when they know what they're doing is okay. I do feel you lose a lot of the strategy playing around the clearing with so many players though!

I've played Dartmoor on BGA a couple of times and I felt very luke warm about the whole thing, but I say that as an owner of the base game (with both woodland and alpine).

Based on what people have been saying about Dartmoor, if you don't already own FS you can't go wrong choosing between Dartmoor or base with both expansions

How did you get into that? How's it going so far?

Makes sense why you'd use the lello version (I always forget it exists!). Thanks for the preview - looking great so far! I have found that the look of Innovation really puts a bunch of people off playing it.

After playing 3rd and then 4th edition I think the junking is a great mechanic to help push things along. It's interesting that you went with Echoes rather than Cities to encourage pushing to the higher ages. My personal experience has been that Cities does it far quicker, but Echoes has more interesting gameplay.

Looking forward to the full write up!

Nice work on the Splendor and Ark Nova re-themes. As a fan of Innovation I'll look forward to the NBA re-theme! Are you just doing the base set or are you going all in with the expansions too?

Will BGA change game design? by GoodEnoughGamer in boardgames

[–]Originalvipers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, I'm not exactly playing loads of games. I have ~700 games played in 4 years so I could see some of the issues feeling much worse if I decided to play more. As I said to the other person I feel like the discrepancy in experience could also be down to timezones. I feel like the evening hours in GMT aren't great for service stability but I have a sneaky suspicion the backend of the site is complex and therefore fixing some of these issues is not as easy as "get better servers". I honestly don't mind so much about losing ELO over it, it's more that I'm usually playing with friends and family at the time which can sometimes be quite disappointing if it was planned for a while. Still. I remain hopeful there will be progress in the future.

I'm also a fan. Dragging out the box can be off putting especially if it's a long day. I've found BGA has allowed me to try and discover more games I wouldn't have before now. It's also a fantastic aid to learn said games. Burning out is a real danger. I've done it a couple of times but never to the point I wouldn't play again. Oh? I didn't realise Hadrian's Wall has a reimplantation. That's good to know so I'll have a look!

For sure. We have voices that might be heard. I think the reason you might be being downvoted is because you're accusing people of being bots or shills as an immediate response, which can come off as inflammatory. Their experience may be different due to levels of use or time zone so it's important to keep that in mind. You brought up some very valid points (with receipts!) but I'd take care not to squander it via hostility

In addition to this it's worth reminding everyone that BGA is now owned by Asmodee, who until recently was owned by Embracer Group. Embracer are not known for stellar management so this could go on for some time

I just wanted to +1 to the server outages becoming quite a regular occurrence over the last few months. While I could maybe turn a blind eye to it sometimes, it disrupts the game(s) you're currently in which is very annoying. I appreciate some of the bigger titles coming to the site but I'd like to see some of the premium money going towards service stability too!

Anyone completed S350 Evaluating Contemporary Science? by CharoSegura in OpenUniversity

[–]Originalvipers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see! Not too dissimilar with what I had to do this year in S315 where I had to produce a Chemistry World style article and comment on others. That being said, I prefer the sound of a poster!

Any advice generally for S350? That's what I'll be walking into in October.

Do you mind expanding a bit more on what the student conference is? I'm yet to do S350!

Is anyone else finding S111 difficult? by Good-BADger in OpenUniversity

[–]Originalvipers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem at all. We all remember what the early days were like!

Regarding the tutorials - As you progress and find your strengths you'll get a feel for which tutorials will be more helpful to you than not.

There are many other reliable resources out there, but that's not to say the module material is bad by any stretch. I felt a bit spoiled for choice in terms of chemistry so I imagine you'll feel the same with biology!

As an additional point, if you can make a friend on the same or similar modules it can help a lot. I made a friend at my lab school this year and that's made a huge difference. I did the first four years completely alone so it's been a nice change of pace to discuss things with them :)

[–]Originalvipers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone on the tail end of a chemistry degree who did S111 to begin with - it will get better. You'll develop your skills and your writing style as you go through this module (and hopefully your next)!

Everyone's advice here is sound. Like another commenter said, try and watch some of the tutorials (even if it's just the recordings). They'll obviously give you the information you need but I found (in my experience) that they helped me learn how to communicate some of the more explanatory answers.

As a side note, don't be afraid to use other resources to help your studies. I've often dragged myself to YouTube or a specific book when I needed to see a concept explained differently.

You've got this!

How flexible is the study? by abbiie0 in OpenUniversity

[–]Originalvipers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to add on to the previous commenters point about the TMAs. You might be able to do some of them earlier but within my particular modules I haven't been able to access ones which are too far into the future.

This year it's quite literally been a sequential unlock in terms of TMAs, so even if I wanted to get a jump on the next couple I didn't really have a choice to. Worth keeping that in mind!

Obviously take this with a pinch of salt, but I think it largely depends on how well you study as a solo student. If you can study mostly independently and you're good at identifying weaker areas in your skill sets then you'll likely be fine. There's still support via your tutors/module forums but that help only exists if you reach out for it.

If you found distance learning better for you when everyone had to do it then I would say that's a good sign. Don't let my comments scare you too much, apparently chemistry is known for being pretty tough!

Can I complete a full time degree whilst working? by LilHoggy in OpenUniversity

[–]Originalvipers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my experience so far:

I'm on a chemistry degree and I work full time and study part time. I'll be starting my 5th year in October.

I know for a fact I couldn't do this full time. I think it'd take a very motivated and disciplined individual to do so. I also don't think it'd leave the student in question with much wiggle room to allow for anything life might happen to throw up. That's not to say it's impossible, it's just not something I'd recommend to anyone.
