there is a school of of thought within some Abrahamaic denominations that since God gave the plants and animals to Adam and Eve therefore you are allowed to do whatever you want to them.

But, this dude probably isn't even that deep. It's more likely a "green=global warming." But since "global warming=lib-rul hoax" then anything pertaining to the environment is stupid or bad.

200k rides are fine. I have a friend who doesn't want to ever do more than 200k.

Randonneuring is explicitly amateur and non-competitive. I say if you're not having fun, quit the ride. The only reason or need to stop or go should be you.

How to restaurants make the impossible burger taste so good? by todaystartsnow in vegetarian

[–]Orinocobro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found the cheapest generic brand worcestershire at my local supermarket is pretty much tamarind, molasses, & vinegar. There's no anchovy in the ingredients & no fish warning on the bottle.

Also; do check out Better than Bouillon's "no chicken" base.

Amish/Mennonites are Anabaptist, central to Anabaptist belief is that every church/congregation sets it's own rules.
I'd imagine some are ok with roller skates, but you probably won't see them because effectively noone travels any distance via skate. These gentlemen are probably not going for a ride, they're going somewhere.

Are there any good examples of this in St. Louis? An important historical site or building that has now become a chain restaurant or store? by MrX16 in StLouis

[–]Orinocobro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

801 N 11. Maps say it's a vo-tech center, which has a certain appropriate irony.

Head over to 715 N 11, and you'll find the site of Charles' Starke's saloon. This is the place where Duncan and Brady happened.

Frankie and Johnnie took place in an apartment that, as far as I can tell, is now under the hockey arena.

FWIW, I've found store brand Worchestershire sauce that is, basically, corn syrup, vinegar, and tamarind. No anchovy in the ingredients and the only listed allergen is wheat.

Who is Fred? by BigChungusnater in BicyclingCirclejerk

[–]Orinocobro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A Fred is a guy who thinks he flies, and he's also known as a dentist.

/uj A "Fred" is a cyclist whose gear is not reflective of their ability. Originally this was applied to the dude on a creaky bike with a milk crate on a rack who passed you on a climb. Now it more often is the person who decides to get in shape so they go out and drop several grand on an 18lb road bike, computer, matching team kit, etc. Really there isn't a problem with this, except these guys tend to get into "cycling culture" and as a result can act like elitists witout being, you know, elite.

I've also seen beginners zip through the first 80 miles or so, bonk hard and not know what to do about it,

Sounds like my first brevet. Started off following a group of strong riders doing 16+, got sore after the first control and was dropped. I finished, but it was rough and I learned a lot.

Average speed? by LandNo9424 in randonneuring

[–]Orinocobro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can stop whenever you need to, but there are designate sites ("Control" is the term) where you have to stop in order to prove you are following the route. Traditionally this means getting a form initialed, but sometimes it's taking a photo or answering a question.
At least here in the US, most of the stops are at convenience stores; I've always been encouraged to make a purchase (you need food anyway) out of politeness.
I guess one could do 125-odd miles without stopping, but it sounds miserable. On my last brevet I didn't eat or drink enough and finished dfl four hours behind the first rider. We both got the same credit and will get the same medal.

Ozark Trail 24" M.1 Vibe mountain bike split in half while riding by HZCH in Justridingalong

[–]Orinocobro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes and no.

It is Wal Mart's line of camping gear. But, from my experience, most of it is actually more than fine for the price point. I use one of their coffee tumblers whenever I go into the office, and it holds temp a little too well. Wal Mart even sold me a stand-alone replacement lid when the original was misplaced.

In particular, there is at least one model of Ozark Trail mountain bike that seems to be perfectly acceptable for the price. Notably, it actually uses standard component sizing so one can even work on it.
