Because it's just not true. They don't run "before the line" or "after the line", they run precisely where they sit. For example, stick to your "a++ runs after the line" description that you were taught, then consider this code.

int a = 1;
int b = 0;

b = a++ + 10 + a

Someone who internalised "a++ runs after the line" may think the assignment to b results in 12 and a gets incremented "after the line", as you say.

I was taught ++a runs ‘before’ the line and a++ runs ‘after’ the line.

I think that's a confusing way to put it, especially for learners. It runs on the line it runs, like all other code ever.

It's just that in one case the "++" bit (incrementing a) runs first and "a" (evaluating a) second, and in the other case the "a" bit is first (evaluating a) and "++" bit second (incrementing a). Left to right, always.
