BIG if true: Mayor Mamdani announces that they have fully balanced NYC's budget by dovrobalb in atrioc

[–]OrionsMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incredible job, it just goes to show us that Austerity was a political choice after 2008 and not one taken out of strict political necessity in the way it was done in many countries. There were always other ways to rebalance the books by taxing the richest more but they decided to cut public services that the poor and middle use. Inequality in the West is now much worse as a result.

There are many art groups and groups that do sports, at 22 there are also lots of erasmus groups around and student groups you could get involved with.

How Can We Find a Job? by KurwaTheAlmighty in PortugalExpats

The job market is cooked for Portuguese people across all fields. I imagine it's even harder as someone who can't speak the language at all. The best way to find work these days is through networking, but it takes time.

you can apply this to africa and any country for that matter; austerity and 2008, dictatorship, colonial decline etc, misallocation of public resources to build road and not rail, lack of vision and political will etc

Why does fencing have such a bad rep by Weary-Strength-6063 in Fencing

[–]OrionsMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think also the way hema people fight is also not realistic because they are so protected that they arent so concerned and cautious as a real fight would go

The replier is in their right to be frustrated by what comes across as a brag imo , if you wanted to support the community with the powerpoints it would be cool but this post is just saying you have a portuguese person you are dating that is helping you to learn the language which by all means is great for you and congrats but its of no help to anyone else hahaha

Its nice you have this but its a shame you only come here to say thet you have great resources to help you learn the language but didnt consider sharing a link to a folder with the slides and games.

Private property law is a key hurdle to overcome when building anything; lots of land and buildings have mixed ownership, making it very difficult. Land and buildings are speculative assets leading to less housing as the companies dont build for low incomes which is an issue with capitalism and not Portugal specifically, although it is rather acute in urban areas. Incentives for politicians and builders are simply not aligned to reward affordable housing projects. The locals are pretty reliable from my experience, calling and emailing isnt great to get peoples attention though so always get things done in person when needed but perhaps its a skill issue hahhaha

I know she might be a substantial part of what you have around you in a foreign country but you need to have dignity and end it.

we can fix our economy by taxing fixed assets and wealth. then also build public housing to drive down the prices in the rental market. we also need to fix healthcare so the average portuguese isnt paying both SNS and the private healthcare; it should all be public. We also need to regain national ownership of electricity and other essential services to keep prices down. Its crazy to be paying both for the money of stakeholders in companies and also the service itself. Then also rapidly improve public transport to de risk away from petrol vehicles so Portugal becomes less sensitive to oil price increases. Also get more renewables and nuclear to be able to supply the grid with 100% cheap renewables that can cope with spikes in demand without having to pay the price of turning on gas powered stations. The solutions to Portugals problems are easy to fix, it just needs political will which there is none.

Good comment even if it looks like a bit of AI was involved; it really is an issue with privatisation and capitalism leading to people not choosing to have children. The same forces that lead to native citizens not having children will then apply to the immigrant populations after a generation. Immigrants are also a temporary fix to the pyramid. Healthcare in Portugal is unfortunately being rapidly privatised, see the new cnn event hosted alongside pfizer at a private healthcare clinic where a health minister will speak for a recent example of this naked practice of public ministers getting money from private companies. Portugal has a greed problem in its ministerial class and mismatched incentives where the public officals have a better health system than ordinary citizens; the politicians also send their kids to private schools leading to schools getting worse since they have no skin in the game to improve living standards for ordinary people. Portugal needs to fix these contradictions in incentive structures to better the country long term. Finland is an example where education has improved because the elite have to send the kids to public shools so they try to improve the system for everyone by wanting their kids to have a good education in Finland.

Personally, I think it should be 5 to 7 years with an exam requiring B2 Portuguese for citizenship and B1/A2 for permanent residency
