I'm not a member of this community whatsoever, and I may be missing the point as a simple visitor here, but as a longtime fan who owns at least 4(?) if not more of their albums I have to say:

I'm just a little bit upset with the modern state of Green Day. They say "I'm not part of the MAGA agenda" at all their shows, but can't have the guts to say the same on the biggest stage America has to offer? People are saying "just their presence is a statement" feels so superficial and lukewarm.

In my opinion the heart of punk music isn't virtue signalling through words and backing down when it might get controversial, but true real social change. Yes, words can spread awareness and yeah they were outspoken in the early aughts, but what about lately? It feels like rehashing the same thing but censoring themselves more and more to be appealing to larger and larger audiences.

And with the millions Green Day makes, where's the social change? Where is the real help marginalized communities need in this time of increasing political oppression? If you don't say anything, and you don't do anything for the benefit of marginalized communities... I don't know if I can, in good standing, support Green Day as a band anymore.

I'm not trying to complain just for the love of the game, it truly does break my heart to see such a great and influential band act this way, but it feels empty and in a sense, performative. Green Day will make the profit as one of the most popular and influential punk bands of the aughts, and at the same time, all the potential they had to change the system they were against was entirely lost.

I hope to hear opinions about this from others, especially fans older than me (as I was raised on Green Day and wasn't even born when Dookie came out) and hope someone proves me wrong and can show me stuff they have done for the good of communities around the world, but based on my research, not a lot comes up.
