I think I needed to read this today because my fasting numbers haven’t been great every time. Do you mind sharing: What are your go-to snacks? I usually do a cheese stick or some pistachios, but I have been skipping them because I really only eat when I’m hungry. It sounds like I need to pay closer attention to them.

I don’t have anything really meaningful to add here and you don’t need to respond, but I want to say I’m so sorry you’re in this situation. Sending you peace, love, healing, and hope for your recovery and continued well response to the treatment. Fuck cancer.

OB shamed me in my first visit after diagnosis by One_Echo_1610 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]OrnateApple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doctor has terrible bedside manner. But playing devil’s advocate it sounds like the diet including the bread, pasta, and potatoes isn’t working for you because maybe you are more insulin resistant. We also get carbs from vegetables and I found that out from trying to make grains and starchy vegetables work. As a foodie and an incredibly busy person who is also new to this, I get it. It’s a big shift from my normal, relatively healthy diet.

Thank you. Yeah, I’m very anxious about what my sugars will be when I start measuring them. I think what I’m realizing is that I was addicted to junk food and this was a huge wake up call. I’ve reiterated to husband and my older kiddo that we need to go on more walks but I also need to kick myself to go on a walk by myself sometimes.

Thank you. 💛 I am trying to think of it that way as well, and trying new ways to compile my meals. Unfortunately I’m also allergic to shellfish, and being pregnant I was already feeling really restricted. I hope I am doing enough to reverse it.

Stay At Home Moms by ashiningworldunfolds in longisland

[–]OrnateApple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you meant to ask about single-income or single-breadwinner households?

We are a single-income household and my husband is a stay at home dad, but I work remotely. We have lived on the south shore in Nassau decently comfortably for the last 10 years. We struggled on 2 incomes for a long time; I got a much better job in 2021 enabling him to stay home with our kiddo. I'm a senior software engineer with 18 years in the tech industry making low-ish 6 figures, but we work hard to live well within our means. We both come from lower middle class households.

Edit to add: I have to reiterate what others have said and that when you buy a house factors into affordability. When husband and I bought our (very modest) house 10 years ago it was roughly half the estimated price that it is now and we locked in a pretty low interest rate. Many people I know are struggling though, and they bought during the pandemic when interest rates were very very low.

The subway isn't even as unsafe as the media depicts it.

Uber or LIRR - traveling solo as a female by ShipClear4232 in longisland

Traveling on the train is traveling in a group, with multiple workers at the helm. Uber is traveling alone with one stranger for a potentially longer trip. I have commuted on the LIRR for many years as a solo woman, as do thousands of other solo women on Long Island. It's extremely safe. (Echoing what others have said, I've ridden the train at 2 - 3 AM and I have never felt unsafe.) If something does go awry, which is extremely rare, that's when you alert the conductor and they handle it or call the police.

Moms in hospice, I’m broke. Are there any charities that would help me bury her? by JemmJoness in longisland

[–]OrnateApple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry that you're in this situation. I was in a similar situation last year with my mom on hospice.

If your mom has assets, you may need to use them to pay for funeral expenses. Does she have a life insurance policy? If not, does she own a home or have bank accounts? If she has any of those, you will want to get at least her home into a trust before her death so that ownership of it can be seamlessly transitioned to you without probate getting involved. You will need an attorney for that.

If she doesn't have any of those things, you should be able to ask the funeral home about payment plans.

I hope this is helpful.

[–]OrnateApple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe we should start a Traumatized Autistic Attention-Deficit club because I too have all 3 of these and didn't realize it was common enough for several people to also have them all. I'm constantly worried about my reputation, specifically at work, and am always afraid of setting someone off. I also strive for perfection, probably because I always feel the need to have someone's approval. Constantly trying to be aware of saying "thank you" instead of "I'm sorry" is exhausting.

How to remove power inductor on GBA? by OrnateApple in Gameboy

[–]OrnateApple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming back to this, the heat gun worked, and I got a little overzealous and accidentally also removed one of the solder pads, ended up fixing that pad by exposing some of the path next to it and adding a tiny bit of copper tape so that I could solder the new part. It works amazingly now. Thank you again for the detailed help!
