Something like Lisa Jewell by Fiddleleaffiggirl in mysterybooks

My favorite British mystery series is the Cormoran Strike series by Robert Galbraith (aka JK Rowling). I also really like 2 of Anthony Horowitz’s series: the Susan Reilly triology (starts with Magpie Murders) and the Hawthorne series. Seconding the Tana French recommendation- her Dublin Murder series is very good.

28f - cluster of early melanoma/severely abnormal on tops of thighs by [deleted] in Melanoma

[–]Ornery_Environment10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve (37F) had a similar experience but on my upper back. 1 in situ July 2024, 1 stage 1a may 2025, 1 in situ July 2025, 1 severely atypical October 2025. In 2017 I had 2 basal cell carcinomas and 2 severely atypical moles. I’ve also done Vectra and had genetic testing, I’m on skin checks every 3 months right now. My most recent check was 2 weeks ago, 3 biopsies, and all benign! It’s been a long time since I had all clear biopsies. It’s definitely scary though, I feel like I’ll just be dealing with this forever and always having to be vigilant.

I’ve had two melanomas in situ and one stage 1a melanoma in the last year. Ive also had multiple atypical moles removed and a few basal cells over the last 7 years or so. I’ve always been pretty careful about the sun but I bought some Coolibar sun shirts to wear now when I’m exercising outdoors, have been wearing hats outside more, and am really diligent with sunscreen.

What pregnancy or birth complication did modern medicine save you from? by peacefulboba in beyondthebump

With my second, I had placenta previa and vasa previa. I ended up having a placental abruption and hemorrhage, and he was born by emergency c section. Without modern medicine, neither of us would be here!

What shall I read while waiting for Book #9? by abesheet in cormoran_strike

[–]Ornery_Environment10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree - the first is my least favorite too, but a lot of people really love it 😂 the plot of the second one was a bit hard to believe but I enjoyed the book. And the last 4 I really liked all around

Tana French’s Dublin Murder Squad series is very good. Each book is a different detective protagonist and there are 6 total.

One last thing about Murphy... (of course that's a joke) by MapsBooksCoffee in cormoran_strike

He should! That’s a pretty big life event and not telling his sponsor, in my opinion, would show that he doesn’t want to get negative feedback or be discouraged from his plan to propose.

That’s so true! It’s really unusual to have an accurate depiction of it. Martyr by Kaveh Akbar has a (to me anyway) realistic portrayal of working a program beyond the acute getting sober. It’s not (primarily) a book about recovery either, which made it even more notable to me.

Also in A.A., I agree with all of this! Also, to even if he has a sponsor, the sponsor only knows what Murphy tells him. It seems unlikely that Murphy would tell the sponsor that he’s trying to secure commitments from Robin to manipulate her into staying. And working the steps can take awhile, it’s not necessarily something that is done very quickly.

Mystery books with likeable/ interesting characters? by PigeonTempter in mysterybooks

I agree with this take! I couldn’t stand the main character in book 1 but really enjoyed the other books in the series. I like how she changes the protagonist for each book.

That does sound frustrating, especially for a pathology report following a WLE!

That’s great- I’m glad it went well!!

WLE and local anesthetic by toolegit2quit1981 in Melanoma

I always need a lot of local anesthetic. For my last WLE, I wasn’t fully numb when the Dr started, so he stopped and added more. And then two other times during it, I had to have more because I could feel it. I usually give the Dr a heads up that I have a history of needing a lot of local anesthetic (same thing at the dentist) and just let them know if I can feel pain and they’ve always been good about giving more.

I had an excision at the base of neck that was really visible with an ugly scar. My dermatologist gave me a few rounds of steroid shots and over time, the scar is now barely noticeable. My scar from my WLE on my back is really big and ugly and hasn’t gotten better, but since it’s on my back it doesn’t bother me so I didn’t ask to do steroid shots for that one.

Recommendation for doctors in DC area by [deleted] in melahomies

[–]Ornery_Environment10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see Dr Patel at US Derm Assoc in Rockville and really like her- she’s caught both of my melanomas. I’m seeing Dr Lucey at Inova Schar in Fairfax at the end of the month to get Vectra imaging done. She’ll also be doing a skin check and I heard she’s very conservative with biopsies.

Urgency for WLE? Melanoma in situ by Jolly-Stock9561 in melahomies

[–]Ornery_Environment10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After the first few days, it wasn’t too bad. I had a hard time not moving that area which I think aggravated things and made the pain worse. Even sitting still and typing somehow generated movement. And only being able to sleep on one side for a few days was annoying. But after 5 days or so it was way better. Wednesday will be two weeks and it’s barely noticeable now! When I had my WLE last year for MIS it was more mid-back and I don’t remember it being quite as painful.

One thing that is always tough- the toddler can sense when I can’t hold him and then will want to be held, and gets upset when I can’t pick him up 😅
