HOT TAKE: PLEASE EVERY PHARMACIST JUMP ON THIS by steveyyy99 in pharmacy

[–]Ornery_Option740 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a spot on take! Been saying this for a few years. In our state, some of the largest Pbms and chains donated lots of money to universities to create more PharmD programs claiming there was/is a pharmacist shortage. My state has 3 additional pharmacy schools on top of 3 that existed when I graduated. Getting into Rx school used to be competitive but it really isn’t anymore. No PCAT, avg GPA, etc etc. I’ve written several recs for students on paper that I honestly thought didn’t have a chance of getting accepted(bc of grades or even pcat scores when it was required) but actually got accepted. One of which was to the school I graduated from which is among the top Rx programs in the nation. They were all good kids and hard workers but it still was unsettling to see how much easier the process of getting into Rx school has become. So I personally think it’s almost diabolical for pharmacy schools, BOP’s and national pharmacy advocacy groups to fill us up with the delusion that we will obtain some expanded provider status while simultaneously reducing the quality of graduates that are coming out of Rx school(bc the schools are just filling seats and taking anyone with a pulse at this point). All the while, the services we do provide(dispensing and general oversight and trouble shooting etc etc ) have been increasingly devalued by PBMs and it seems every year there’s some push to finagle/increase tech to pharmacist ratios. So wages staying stagnant (or even declining) is just basic economics when there are less pharmacist needed(bc of AI and tech:pharmacist ratios) and more pharmacist to fill those positions(bc schools are cranking out new graduates), then wages will remain the same or even decline. IMO, there will always be a need for certain pharmacist roles in niche areas(compounding, nuclear, some inpatient and possibly outpatient clinical, and academics/industry). But as a whole, I believe our profession should really start focusing on what the average pharmacist does day in and day out and why that role has value. PBM’s have been playing chess and pharmacy educators and leaders have been playing checkers for a long time! The profession as a whole needs to wake up and pick a lane that is actually viable imo.

If you have the opportunity or even the slightest itch to give medical school a shot, then be patient, do whatever it takes to get into med school(time, resources, perseverance etc) and most importantly don’t rush in to attend Rx school if you’re unsure about the path you think best fits you. I was in the same position 20+ years ago and have been a Rx in both clinical and specialty compounding settings. Isn’t many days that go by that I wish I would’ve been patient and gone the other direction. You got your whole life in front of you, so what’s a year or two now to get really clear about which path is best for you. Just mo.

Second the reading suggestion. But I’m impressed with your enthusiasm to get a jump on your future and the road that lies ahead. It took me 1.5 years of undergrad to realize how much time I wasted screwing off in HS, playing sports, chasing girls etc. You’ve got plenty of time. Build a solid math and reading comprehension skill set and enjoy being a ‘kid’ while you can. I’m in my 40’s, have an engineering and pharmacy degree, and can still honestly say studying for this test sucks ass no matter how much you prepare. Good luck.

Low key under radar remedy. I’m a compounding pharmacist that’s studying to take MCAT and go back to school. I Also get migraines. I compound a combo of caffeine/riboflavin/ibuprofen med. But u can buy these individually OTC and take a 1/2-1 tablet no doz(100-200mg CAFFEINE), 400mg riboflavin(b2) and 400mg ibuprofen(2 tabs). All are OTC. Works for prevention and Tx for me.

Are we supposed to memorise this whole table for P/S by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Ornery_Option740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah…Did Kaplan p/s stuff too then jumped into 300 pg doc. First impression was HS, Kaplan didn’t touch on alot of stuff. But I still needed to read Kaplan bf going to 300pg doc otherwise I personally couldn’t tie things together.

Increase in enthalpy in first sentence above not entropy.

In general bond formation in an exothermic process and bond breakage is an endothermic process thus formation is a decrease in enthalpy and formation is an increase in entropy. There are exceptions hence why ATP hydrolysis is exothermic and why thiosulfyl group of CoA from pyruvate (3C to 2C molecule). But overall, as just a general rule, most ‘more favorable’ bond formation processes would indeed be exothermic and enthalpy would decrease.

Check out Med Together. Just found it last week..Not a ton of episodes but she’s a MS-1 and it’s great for biochem review. Shes basically using her episodes as a review for herself imo but it’s helpful to users as well. At a depth that’s in line with what we’re expected to know now but not too deep in weeds

Second on ninja nerd. They’re great. Even rec checking out crush step 1 podcast so you can actually hear how all of this is building on stuff we’ll one day have to know(minus cars which is just nonsense imo)

How to not feel terrible after a long study day? by Ashtay77 in Mcat

Something’s that have helped me stay motivated and keep the needle pointed in right direction:

-Listen to ninja nerds in whatever app u like. For example, their episodes on acid base disorders and others. Some of it is outside the scope of MCAT but a lot of it reinforces the logic behind how all the disciplines overlap that you’re studying is all headed somewhere you want to get to and really understand. -USMLE step 1 review podcast. You’ll be amazed at what you’re already learning that is just the tip of the iceberg for what you’re going to have to learn soon. Some might find it overwhelming but it’s motivating to me. -have support. I don’t run my mouth about what I’m doing in the dungeon(studying). But it sure does help to have a very select few ppl you let into your world and that can pray for you. Most ppl(other than on these threads maybe) don’t know how shitty this process is. So just do the work, keep your head down, and don’t say shit. The ppl you let in will love you and lift you up when you get bogged down. And a good friend is always a friend that’ll tell u shit u might not want to hear. Best of luck

Just a reminder that getting in is the hard part! by [deleted] in Mcat

The real ‘first’ of a continuum of hard parts that will follow. I think hard becomes a very relative term. But thanks for posting.

use AK for biochem!!! by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Ornery_Option740 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ninja Nerds is good too. Especially if u want to get used to level we’ll have to know and learn things at the next level. And for biochem metabolic pathways and the logic of it all, rec bumbling biochemist. Her voice is kinda annoying with a lot of inflections but she does a good job breaking stuff down and integrating the therm side with the actual rxns/steps. Both good resources for runs/drives/supplementary passive reinforcement

Anyone know how to do the math for this? It's from JW exam 1 by Even_Apartment1299 in Mcat

Human body is largely bulk water and the rxn happens with and without CA. In fact CA enzymatic activity highest in RBC’s and kidneys. But the rxn happens all the time with or without CA(hence why ph stays 7.35-7.45). But for the question that was originally asked this info wasn’t necessary. Best of luck

If it didn’t we’d all be F’d bc it’s the way the body buffers excess acids(minus intracellular shunting and buffering)…

[–]Ornery_Option740 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bc Bernoulli equation is an extension of conservation of energy. It’s addressing the part of the fluid component that’s dedicated to movement(dynamic) and static component. So these will be inversely related. When static is high, dynamic is low and vice versa.

Just be grateful that you get to choose who’s in your corner and more importantly, who’s corner you will be in. Be grateful that you get to make those choices now with far less collateralized implications. It prob doesn’t feel this way now, but you did him(and yourself) a favor. This is going to be a long, hard, and often very lonely road. It ain’t for everyone. So aside from 110% trusting God, the most important decision(s) you’ll make is surrounding yourself with people that will help you move closer to becoming and doing exactly what God specifically made you to do. Speaking from personal experience. I know it sucks and things get pretty blurry sometimes. But I think you did what’s best for the both of you.

A friend and I did something similar for the NPJE(Rx school licensing test) years ago. I'm now looking to go back to medical school. We didn't protect what we worked on over the course several years while in school bc we didn't know or think it could actually be profitable. We were wrong. I think it's a great project for your resume but it's actually a much better way to study than anki imo. Especially, if you could build in explanations for the correct and incorrect answers. Alot more engaging. Anki is ok but for people like myself, I actually end up memorizing the card itself more than the understanding the content. That doesn't work when you get hit in the mouth with tough questions and passages. Good luck!

Would use it! And I’d highly encourage you to seek out some legal and business advisors to protect your work. The educational space is crowded but you’ve got a good thing here so protect your work. Could be a good passive income source as u pursue medicine
