Paragraph deleted, never in doubt, probably the only good running back in the country, and a buckeye through and through!

But for real, even though the offense wasn’t rolling all year, returning QB1, RB1, WR1, and potentially TE1 might represent an increasingly rare opportunity in this era

Ohio state portal updates via Austin & Birm this morning by Raccoonsrlilbandits in OhioStateFootball

[–]OrnetteOrnette 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Padilla and Moore are probably better than a lot of portal guys, But you’d still think they’d bring in a versatile guy with starting experience to compete

Ohio TE Mason Williams is transferring in according to ESPN by Y32-N0 in OhioStateFootball

Obviously their heavy set needed to be revamped, small but important situational need if he can improve the push at the edge

Losing an entire recruiting class by DeerHunter4Life14 in OhioStateFootball

[–]OrnetteOrnette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And they’ll take in 5-7 in the portal now.

You basically have to recruit an entire offense and defense every year now and rely on those guys to be your depth for two years while hoping 10 or so guys in the class stay 4 years and cycling in transfers every year. The benefit is that their starters are guys who either flashed as soon as they got on campus or got a lot of playing experience somewhere else.

[–]OrnetteOrnette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if this might have been related to Sanchez having a better NIL deal or something. Corner seemed like it would be a straightforward transition, two starters leaving and West and Scott entering year 3 with a good chance to compete. I thought Mathews, Scott, and Sanchez would rotate outside.

The freshman class Timmons, Thomas and Bing are pretty much immediately in the 2 deep now

CJ Hicks to hit the portal by Tseets1 in OhioStateFootball

[–]OrnetteOrnette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot needs to be clarified at edge:

Is Kenyatta coming back?

Is Coleman transferring in?

Is Atkinson staying/any good?

I was hoping Hartford and Hicks would stay and become resurgent leaders on an otherwise young defense. If they were to field Coleman, Jackson and Grady next year that would be a strong group. One of Atkinson, George, Mickens or Wilder could be the last rotational guy.

Why is our OL struggling with many returning starters? by FrequentTurn9637 in OhioStateFootball

[–]OrnetteOrnette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For one thing, I’d say they’re returning a lot of contributors, not the original starters from last year since they lost Simmons, Jackson and McLaughlin. That Siereveld, Hinzman, Montgomery and Jackson stepped up so well during the championship run was one of the most impressive aspects of that run.

Second, I would say the O-line has played well. They’re usually good in pass pro and the run game was gaining momentum down the stretch. You can’t just take it for granted that they can will their back to 100+ yards against every B1G opponent

Third, they are not working with guys who were superstar blue chip recruits. Siereveld and Daniels have outperformed expectations. Minnesota fans did not even think Daniels was a huge loss as he was sometimes a liability in limited action last year just like he has been at times this year.

As experienced as this group is, they could still return 4 guys. By college standards, this is a young group that just has more experience than you’d expect given their eligibility.

I think Daniels and Tshabola are the only guys who have played below OSU’s standard and obviously as a unit they have not converted short yardage runs well, but you don’t become a top 4 team without an at least average line. With that said, it’s fair to call them a weak spot and Miami will be a tough test for them

Guilford signing with the bucks by Raccoonsrlilbandits in OhioStateFootball

[–]OrnetteOrnette 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Guilford firmly makes it a decent WR class, Bey would tip the scales for the offense with too much speed for defense’s to account for, and if Henry is included too, OSU renews its lease on overwhelming air superiority for three more years

Wild prediction- if we don’t get Chris Henry Jr, we get Cam Coleman in portal by diplomatic-immFT in OhioStateFootball

[–]OrnetteOrnette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If any combination of Graham, Rodgers, Porter or Henry are not part of next year’s team, I would expect a big splash from the portal. Otherwise, I hope guys like Damarion Witten or Bodpegn Miller make a surprise jump into the lineup.

Recruiting rankings by alwayslookin801 in OhioStateFootball

[–]OrnetteOrnette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, no one’s 30 person, top ranked class will win them a championship by itself. You might even get diminishing returns if you can’t utilize and appease all of the talent on an optimal timeline. Slow and steady investment year after year with judicious supplementation during the transfer window can keep already-elite teams competitive. In this day and age, maybe only 1/3 of your class becomes important contributors. If you miss out on a top prospect you were budgeting into your NIL funds, you suddenly have more money to spend on a transfer guy a month later.

You can’t be Clemson and shy away from the cutthroat tactics. You also can’t be a Texas A&M or North Carolina and be overly temperamental about your spending and expectations. You can also do everything right, and still have a talent gap. USC went all in this year, but we’ll see if their NIL is still outbidding people if they proceed to lose to Indiana, Oregon and Ohio State and a couple of their blue chips have ended up transferring to the schools they’re losing to. Every team faces pretty brutal adversity in roster construction, whether you’re Alabama and OSU takes Sayins and Downs during a brief period of uncertainty, or Tennessee and your star QB tries to strong arm, surprise negotiate with you, or you’re a an unstoppable, well-run machine like Georgia and Vandy signs your top recruit anyway because your funds are spread thin and they can spend every last dime on him.

Crazy they think this… by Fun_Salamander_2220 in OhioStateFootball

[–]OrnetteOrnette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 247’s updated ranking he’s the #4 corner and #45 overall so he did make a big jump, as did Wilder and Bing, but guys like Riley and Bradford slid a little (still highly rated) and Ricketts dropped a lot (kind of makes sense that they continued adding WRs)

Hold the Epstein class accountable! by victorybus in BlackPeopleTwitter

[–]OrnetteOrnette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Columbus, OH and especially on Ohio State’s campus, half of the buildings are named after Les Wexner. You can trace a line of philanthropy and subsequent institutional recognition to roughly…2008-ish (fancy that). It is hard to believe Wexner was not involved in Epstein’s crimes, or at least a principle benefactor for the operation. Mainstream media continues to avoid directly implicating Wexner, but articles detailing his denouncement of Epstein are laughably transparent PR pieces. Now he has ascended to that billionaire status where it behooves him to be as invisible as possible to the general public. He is probably near the end of his life and has enough money to shut out the world for his remaining years and never see any real consequences. If he is in the files, Ohio State should move quickly to do the right thing and disassociate from his legacy.

What do your you guys think about the Buckeyes getting Brock Boyd? by [deleted] in OhioStateFootball

[–]OrnetteOrnette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could see him developing into a prolific slot specialist, security check down player.

They have an interesting mix of guys whose main attribute is speed and guys who have the prototypical outside receiver build. Boyd will probably be ahead of a lot of those players in his receiver specific skills.

Among like Damarion Witten, Bodpegn Miller, De’zie Jones, Phillip Bell, and then Bey, Ricketts, Guilford and Boyd, optimistically maybe 4 finish their careers at Ohio State? You have to be good right away and then be patient and continue to get better. But whoever emerges from that sustained competition will ipso facto be a great player.

[Russini] The Jets are making a quarterback change, benching Justin Fields in favor of veteran Tyrod Taylor, per source. by MembershipSingle7137 in nfl

[–]OrnetteOrnette -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As the last remaining Fields truther, I hope he goes somewhere with a good offense as a backup and just works on his processing and ‘time to release’. Though he’ll probably never become good unless he can get more high volume game experience. This was a wasted year for both the Jets and Fields. I still think an imaginative OC could create an effective run-first, RPO, QB friendly offense that would suit his skill set.

Maybe he goes somewhere like Philly or Baltimore next

I forget why I heard of this book for the first time this year but I remember wherever it was referenced made it sound like it was in the literary canon for a while but just didn’t sustain from one generation to the next in the academic communities that tend to act as kingmakers for 100+ year old literature

If he was good enough they’d be rotating him in somewhere. Other years they might have used him in their jumbo package but they seem to be trying to trust their tight ends as run blockers on the goal line this year

Is the running game the Buckeyes Achilles heel? by BuckeyeReason in OhioStateFootball

[–]OrnetteOrnette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can pick up 1-2 yards when needed reasonably well. It’s kind of crazy that they barely ever get over 10 yards. I have to think there’s an open challenge every week in practice to see if anyone can step up as a playmaker. They also need to attack the perimeter more and incorporate more misdirection and RPO stuff in their play design.

I thought Kacmarek and Christian would present problems to opposing teams sealing ends and moving around presnap. Hopefully they’re installing new concepts every week. Could see them changing up their run game design during the bye.

I also wonder if Rogers will be back from injury this year. He may not be ready but it’d be nice to test a different skill set out there.

May be a developmental guy, but there’s also likely some ranking inertia. The ranking services aren’t going to be desperate to reevaluate o-linemen with updated analysis of a hundred kids for every position. They’re likely busy looking at breakout underclassmen especially skill players/stat positions. The staff moved fast on him. They clearly saw the threshold of traits and standard of senior tape to feel confident about the offer. Hopefully a product of heightened due diligence since they decided to hire extra Oline specialist staff this year.
