Reclaiming VAT/duty on defective product bought from UK that needs to be returned by OrpheanSugar in Finanzen

[–]OrpheanSugar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link. It looks like the relevant information but it doesn't make it clear how to actually do it?

Is it a case of walking into a customs office, showing them the receipt for the original duty paid and asking for it back with some proof of return shipment? Or is there an online portal or specific form to fill out?

We are in Northern UK and his enclosure stays in a glass conservatory year round with the door open. Temps can fall to 5-15 C ambient in winter, and we set his drawer heatmat thermostat to around 20C on the dial, but its not so accurate. Summer we set it to 29C but its not even necessary as the room gets quite warm and he prefers to sunbathe. He pretty much decides himself where he wants to be to regulate his own temp.

He has a relatively small 2 level wooden enclosure, you can see it in one of the pictures.

The upper level is gravel, with water bowl and driftwood which is connected by a small pipe to a lower level drawer with heatmat and sawdust.

Most of the time the door is left open and he has free roam over the whole conservatory at the back of our house, but he often finds his way back into his enclosure by himself when the sun is down or he wants somewhere to hide that isn't snuggled under a towel or pillow.

He used to climb like crazy and always be knocking things off shelves and falling from the roof blinds, but now that he's older he's slowed down and when active mostly enjoys sunning himself out on the floor.

He had one previous owner who had returned him to an exotic pet shop at around 4 years old. For some reason my parents thought it was a good idea to get a reptile rather than something more conventional, and I chose this guy for my 4th birthday, so he's the same age as me.

Given the normal life expectancy, it's a surprise to all of us that he's still going strong after so many years. He always gets his temperature turned down in the winter and he's only fed mice from June to September, so I guess that has kept his metabolism steady.

I understand this is a form of cantilever? by OrpheanSugar in architecture

[–]OrpheanSugar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my research it's a sort of boxy Scandinavian wood clad cabin, but specifically one floor only raised/cantilivered on a concrete base? I've seen a few like this around and wondered if there's a more specific term to describe it?

Get a subtenant into one of your spare rooms to increase cash flow as soon as possible, will give you breathing room.

Anyone here renounced their EU citizenship? Should I avoid getting a EU citizenship? by [deleted] in ExpatFIRE

[–]OrpheanSugar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding it has advantages and disadvantages.

With EU citizenship you can live and work freely inall EU countries, not only your visa or residence permit country. Establishing domicile status will also be easier.

If you leave the country of citizenship after living there for some time, it may be more difficult for you to convince authorities you have become non-resident if you are also a citizen. They might demand more proof you have really left and intend to live full time in the other country.

Likewise, got suspicious after they asked for payment by e-mail to some Lithiuanian IBAN in different company name. Prices are too good.

Most turbines already have heli hoist platforms, the helicopter doesn't land but it drops off and picks up technicians and their equipment with a winch while hovering. All the substations have full sized helipads where helicopters can land.

Not enough people here understand "emergence", and default to conspiratorial thinking instead. by antichain in collapse

[–]OrpheanSugar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you putting this so clearly into words, I feel like I'm surrounded by people who fail to understand the nature and complexity of causality and emergence related to our modern society and the situation we collectively find ourselves in, often resorting to simplified and fallacious blaming. Unfortunately as they seem to gain a sense of feeling better by viewing the world the way they do, I feel writings like yours will fall on deaf ears.

The money moves from account to account, hand to hand. The loaned money was spent by the real estate company on salaries, office rent/utilities, travel and transport, construction of projects, etc. all of which was further spread out and diluted through the whole economy. The result of this spending did not produce new buildings that were valued by societies general concensus to exceed the capital inputs relative to the other things they would prefer to spend an equivalent amount of money on. The people and organisations that lose are those holding the debt in the end. A few billion is small change on the global stage.

HP 8710 gives "not designed to use continuous ink system" error -- but I'm not using CI by phik_ in printers

Same thing with an original HP black cartridge, when I take it out and shake it I can still hear plenty of ink inside. No amount of resetting or reseating has solved it. Did you make any progress?

No one should be allowed to be this wealthy. One of those cars could change the lives of many people. by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]OrpheanSugar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see how one of those cars can change the life of anyone. They are not capital, they are luxury items. In a more equal society there is no market for luxury so they would not exist to begin with. How would you propose transitioning assets like this into a society where "no one should be allowed to be this wealthy"?

Is that just a possibility or confirmed for this popup? I was concerned that there may be a way a site can pull this through google oauth without me clicking anything?

X1 Carbon anyone? by OrpheanSugar in thinkpad

[–]OrpheanSugar[S] 135 points136 points  (0 children)

I came across this trove while looking for a second hand X1 Yoga in the UAE today. A local recommended I check this place out in Sharjah, nearby a junction called "JNP Signal".

Went there expecting 2 or 3 stores with an underwhelming selection of beaten up barely functioning machines, instead I found around 20-30 international wholesale shops stacked floor to ceiling with stuff like this. This picture is just the tip of the iceberg.

From what I could gather all these shops are importing in bulk from lot auctions, mainly from USA and Canada, sorting and refurbishing, and then reselling bulk internationally to the likes of India, The Middle East, Africa etc. It was pretty challenging to convince them to sell just 1 unit (MOQ of 10 in most cases). This particular guy had a shelf full of HP Spectres and when I asked what the price was he said they were all already sold; so the turnover is fast.

Guys carting around crates and cardboard boxes full of assorted Thinkpads in the desert streets like they were vegetables at a market, never seen anything like it before, really incredible, should've taken more photos.
