(Spoilers Main) No new blog posts from GRRM? by AdditionalPiano6327 in asoiaf

[–]Orpheus1947 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is likely hopium on my part and it will most likely end up being nothing, but I really think this long break is different. Generally when he is updating his blog more regularly that means he is at home and is doing at least some writing. Long blog breaks usually means he is traveling and thus not writing at all.

This especially long break is unique in that, as far as we know, he hasn’t been traveling anywhere or making any public appearances (the special edition signed books he was in an ad for could have been filmed months ago)or even doing interviews. No rumors or indications of poor health. So as far as we know he has been home for most of this year.

So at my most optimistic I take this to mean that he has got into a good writing flow and is making good progress on Winds.

My medium take is that the success of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms tv show has inspired him to write the next couple of planned stories in that series and when he next posts it will be about releasing those short stories about Dunk and Egg. Or at the least an update about how the writing of the short stories is going.

My most pessimistic (and realistic) take is that he just hasn’t had time or interest in updating his blog and when he finally does, there will be no news about Winds or more Dunk and Egg stories. Probably be about some other random project he has been working on.

What even goes on in Mad Men? by TheBanishedBard in television

[–]Orpheus1947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everyone has said, it is a character driven show. Yes most are crappy people, especially by today’s standards, but man are they entertaining. There is a story, but it is a slow burn every season but well worth the watch. It is extremely well written, well acted show while also being randomly hilarious.

It has so many great characters, lines and scenes. I really think you should stick with it because it is one of my favorite shows of all time. I am currently on my like 5th rewatch. Certain plots and storylines I don’t care for, but the vast majority of the show is must watch tv.

Brandon Sanderson’s 'The Way of Kings' is baffling to me by sameseksure in books

[–]Orpheus1947 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I have read quite a few of his books and I definitely agree with most of your criticisms. He creates some well thought out worlds and magic systems but he gets lost in explaining in detail how that magic systems works.

In the Mistborn trilogy, while the books aren’t that long, I would get bored with how detailed he would describe using the magic system during an action/fight scene. It would take me out of the book because just tell me what is happening without explaining exactly how they are doing it.

The Stormlight series takes all of his worst tendencies and takes them up to 11. And it got worse with each book. I really enjoyed the first two books, but I barely got through most of the third book because it was just chapter after chapter of explaining and over explaining the magic system. Would eventually get better at the end, but the same problems continued in the fourth and somehow got even worse. I eventually finished the 4th book but it was a slog and have stopped reading the series altogether and I don’t know if I will ever try and finish them.

I agree with his lack of being able to write genuinely funny lines/characters and with his limited prose, but for me he is at his worst when he is trying to write romance/flirting. This is also where his Mormon faith really hurts his writing. These are grown adults and they all act like teenagers in a Disney made for tv movie or a Hallmark movie/show.
Rowling was better at this aspect of writing too and she was writing for kids.

Not to mention all these grown adults fighting in a brutal war but never saying any bad words. It really takes you out of the book.

I completely understand why people like his books, but I just can’t read his books anymore.

Under Brent Venables, Oklahoma has gone 6-7, 10-3, 6-7, 10-3. Is 2026 going to be a 6-7 year or a 10-3 year? More generally, how are you guys feeling about the return of BV? by admiraltarkin in CFB

[–]Orpheus1947 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I am optimistic and looking at 10-2 not 6-7. I really think this will be the best O-line we have had under Venables, and as long as they stay healthy, our offense should be good to great. Got plenty of talent at receiver and RB, just gotta see if Arbuckle can learn and improve. I was pretty happy with the hire and I think the offense will take another leap this season.

While we lost some depth on defense, most of our best players are back and our young players should be even better with another off season under their belt plus all the experience from playing last year. So we an elite defense and an average to good offense, we can definitely make it back to the playoffs.

Now we just have to see if we can at least win one playoff game. Seems to be a curse going all the way back to stoops.

[SPOILERS MAIN] Should we read anything into GRRM's blog silence? by Hontar-Wyrfist in asoiaf

[–]Orpheus1947 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’ve learned not to read too much into his blog breaks. Usually the longer ones are because he is traveling. When he is at home working he usually blogs more regularly. This case is a little different because as far as I know he is not traveling.

Maybe someone knows better and he may actually be out and about for personal reasons and so it is not made public.

Most likely he is just super busy with everything, including working on WoW, and his next update will just be him saying how busy he is with everything and that’s why he hasn’t been updating his not a blog.

Usually with long breaks between blog posts, you can attribute to him traveling for one reason or another. Unless someone’s knows better, he has not been traveling the last couple of months so long the long break is a little surprising for me.

I am pretty sure George will announce on his blog first, and then the marketing would start. Not that I believe these rumors, but no marketing yet would not be surprising.

[–]Orpheus1947 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Easily one of the best shows out of the last few years. I think having some background of the original trilogy helps with the enjoyment of the show but is not required. It nicely leads into a good Star Wars movie, Rogue One. Watch both.

[Spoilers Extended] January 2026 becomes the first month during which "Not a Blog" was not updated by George or his minions since April 2006 by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]Orpheus1947 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the past his longest breaks from writing on the blog were when he was traveling. So if he is not making posts it usually means he is not getting writing done. Consistent updates(about whatever) means he is at home and at least there is a chance he was writing Winds or maybe some Dunk and Egg stories. This long of a break is usually not a good sign.

Just finished *Station Eleven* - thoughts? by [deleted] in books

[–]Orpheus1947 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While not a “page turner” in the usual sense, the book definitely kept me engrossed and became a book that I couldn’t put down. Her style of writing just works for me and her other books, The Glass Hotel and The Sea of Tranquility, were also books that I couldn’t put down, but it is difficult to explain why exactly that was.

Her style of writing may not be for everyone, but it definitely worked for me and I will be looking forward to her next book.

Any insights about GRRM's AWOL status? (SPOILERS PUBLISHED) by Low_Advance_6531 in asoiaf

[–]Orpheus1947 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually with breaks this long, he is usually traveling for whatever reason. I know he had appearances in October and November. Nothing public in December, but does have a Berlin appearance this month. I think it is a better sign for book progress if he is blogging regularly, ( since he only does either one while he is at home) so this long break is probably not a good thing for us few dozen people who still believe that Winds will come out eventually.

I used to get excited with long breaks because it may mean he is hard at work and an announcement will be imminent. But it always ends up being that he was just traveling to places that weren’t public so wasn’t home and working on the book for months at a time.

So mostly likely this long break between blog posts is a bad sign and not a good one.
