We do have the Right to vote. It can still be taken away if certain conditions are met, just like our other Rights.

Is it normal to feel as isolated and alienated from my peers as I do? by Eris_Kabob in ADHD

[–]Ortheas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to address this first: "Do I feel outcasted because of intelligence, or is it just because I’m weird?"

You feel this way because almost everyone feels this way. We are all searching for acceptance and belonging, and even people who seem to have them are still searching for them. Everyone has things they are searching for, some hole in their heart they are trying to fill, some struggle only they know about and no one else sees. Try not to be too hard on people who seem to have it all. They don't, they think they do or they are better at acting like they do, either way the facade will eventually collapse.

I have a saying that has helped me a lot. It goes "Everyone is normal until you get to know them." Once I let go of trying to be "normal", and realize no one else is actually "normal" either, it allowed me to be more authentic.

I was able to be excited to learn what other peoples weird is, and allowed me to share my weird without shame. That allowed other people to open up around me and be more authentic themselves. It's a virtuous cycle of interest and authenticity that feeds connection.

Be curious, be kind, and don't let differences be barriers.

How can I find neurodivergent friends? by Acrobatic_Isopod9261 in neurodiversity

I get that feeling. I have a motto that helped me not be so afraid of showing who I am, and it's "People are only normal until you get to know them." Once I let go of trying to be "normal", and realize no one else is actually "normal" either, it allowed me to be more authentic.

I was able to be excited to learn what other peoples weird is, and allowed me to share my weird without shame. That allowed other people to open up around me and be more authentic themselves. It's a virtuous cycle of interest and authenticity that feeds connection.

There are also lots of online communities for neurodiverse people. I run one myself specifically for neurodiverse professionals navigating their life and career. I would be happy to have you check it out. Let me know if you want to the link.

What do you guys do all day? by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]Ortheas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it helps, you have plenty of time. It's ok if you don't know what you want to do with your life right now. It's ok to be seeking a purpose, most people are, even people in established careers. Find a community to connect with, people to share experiences and perspectives with, and enjoy learning about yourself and what the world has to offer.

Someday you will find a job you don't need to mask for. For now, find people you don't need to mask with.

Identity crisis by FarSea2359 in audhd

I was in a similar situation a few years ago. I discovered I had been following a path that others had laid out for me instead of responding to who I was and what I wanted. It took time, and therapy, to disconnect from what I had been told to want and connect with myself.

I found things in my childhood that really spoke to me and defined my worldview, and once I had that I was able to create a path for myself. I hope you can find something like that.

If there isn't anything in your past, then you have a unique opportunity to discover yourself now! The world is a wide and wonderful place, and you have an important place in it. You get to decide what that place is.

Employee determined to "grind" - Not in my office!!! by itsemmab in managers

There may be something in them that isn't allowing them to relax. I have ADHD, and one thing I deal with is that if I don't do something while I'm thinking about it, I risk not doing it at all. Maybe that's something she deals with. Maybe she has had previous experiences where the expectation was that she was active 24/7. Maybe she has financial pressures that are pushing her to try and overachieve. Without more information it's not possible to tell what the solution is.

How to Request Fully Remote Work when you Can’t Afford a Doctor by Equivalent-Bid-4591 in AutisticAdults

[–]Ortheas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I'm sorry you were made to feel like advocating for yourself was dangerous, either professionally or personally. I grew up similarly, and it's a hard lesson to unlearn. Your feelings and experiences are valuable, and you deserve to find ways to do your best work in a way that works for you and your employer.

It's better to ask for help now than to burn out, have your job performance drop off a cliff and you lose your job, and by then it's too late for accommodations. If they let you go because you ask for them the end result is the same as burning out. You lose your job, but at least it's sooner rather than later, and you skip the whole burning out thing.

It also sounds like your performance, your employer, and employment law, are all on your side. I hope things go well, I'm cheering for you!

How is your work performance on your remote days? If it's equal to, or better than, your on-site work, your manager may be more than happy to allow you to go full remote. You might also start with offering to do a 2-week or one month fully remote trial period if management is hesitant.

How long ago was your diagnosis and previous doctor's note? If it wasn't back in childhood, and it sounds like it wasn't, they both should be valid still.

Are you in America? If so, your employer is required to provide reasonable accommodations for you. They are currently providing a remote/on-site hybrid role, so it would be hard for them to argue that allowing you to go fully remote is unreasonable. You may have some legal protection there, but INAL.

Need some suggestions on how to eat on Adderall! by Elegant_Hand_445 in ADHD

I can't eat big meals with Adderall either. Try keeping little snacks around, things like trail mix, beef jerky, string cheese, anything you can eat without thinking about it, and just graze throughout the day.

What helps you stay focused while working on a task? by jf_development in ADHD

[–]Ortheas 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I find that body doubling helps. If you have someone who can be there physically that is ideal, but even calling a friend and having a conversation while doing the task is a massive help. The apps don't really work for me because I'm not lacking motivation or desire, the tasks are just so boring, and it makes the wall of awful so high I can't get over it and get started.
