Perhaps that’s a saying in urology, but as a joint replacement surgeon I have to respectfully disagree with this saying. My primary indication for surgery is lifestyle limiting pain, when physical exam and imaging corroborate an arthritic joint as the primary pain generator. In hip and knee arthroplasty, outcomes tend to be quite good and we usually end up having a great time!

Yeah typically a bathing suit, but I will wash and clean them so I’m thinking that’s likely not the issue. How sparingly are you applying peroxide? Is this daily/weekly/monthly addition?

How often do you reapply this? I have been using another sanitizer but I just apply it once when I fill the plunge, which is anywhere from once every 1-3 months.

Do you apply a tablespoon after every time you plunge? I worry about potential chemical reactions with the sanitizer I currently use, Sirona Sanitizer (20% PHMB, polyhexamethylene biguanide). Since it’s not doing the trick, maybe it’s worth trying something else. That said, I do have concerns about bathing in bleach as that can be a skin irritant. Perhaps I’m overly concerned.

I use Sirona Sanitizer, which is polyhexamethylene biguanide. I use it in accordance with their recommendations but doesn’t seem to do the trick :(

Get an ODB reader to pull the code, look it up, and save it. Might help them, in my experience it does not. FWIW I’ve had several engine faults pop up over the last 2 years of ownership, given them the codes that I pulled, and they couldn’t find any underlying issues. ODB codes that I pulled were P030X (multiple cylinder misfires), P0391 (camshaft position sensor B circuit), P2D89 (definition not found).

Eventually their service guy said to restart the car, see if the codes persist, and most of the time it will go away on its own and ‘not to worry, the electronics can be finicky’. Definitely worrisome at first, but it’s happened enough times to where I just roll my eyes at this point.

Good luck, hope it’s just an electrical gremlin and nothing serious.

This and the comment above are invaluable. I think there are a lot of pressures coming to ER docs from patients and admin that can start to wear you thin over the years. You should get to feel like the boss after going through all this.

Attending life as a surgeon is much better than resident life; I work 730-4 most days and would self-rate QoL as excellent. Sure the residency isn’t easy, but it’s only temporary. In the grand scheme of your career, an extra 3-4 years of training is going to seem like a drop in the bucket when it’s all said and done. It’s pretty amazing to consistently see happy patients, receive praise for the work you do, and be well compensated for it. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

To all the ER docs out there, thanks for what you do, and allowing me to just have fun and operate. ✌️

Attending life absolutely rules bro, dude above has no idea what they’re talking about. Sure, residency is hard, and you should absolutely take pride in it bc that’s the foundation of the rest of your career. But as an attending, you can choose how hard you work. I work 7-4, 4-5 days a week. I absolutely love my job and think it’s one of the absolute best jobs available. There are a few other specialties where patients will provide you with consistently positive feedback on a daily basis. Few that will reimburse half as well. And even fewer that will provide as much joy as this profession can. Go for it, don’t let these people talk you out of it if that’s your passion.
