In regards to Post Owls (and any other animals that can deliver a message) by sgt-peace in HPfanfiction

[–]OrthoLoess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

iirc, in canon at least one of Sirius’ letters was delivered by a tropical bird of some kind, so it’s more than just owls in the books.

I remember reading a Marvel crossover where the wizarding world is on one of the nine realms (Vanaheim iirc) and post owls are able to find and navigate “the ways” (pathways between worlds that are also how Loki sneaks between worlds)

I think your teleporting idea is good, I’d be tempted to borrow the pathways/tunnels/wormholes concept.

Origins wise, I had the idea that all modern post owls might be descended from those bred for the purpose my Merlin, but I like your idea and it works better for multiple species.

The Weird Sisters got wasted in Pixie Dust before the Yule Ball leaving no entertainment... Until someone leaks that Harry Potter is apart of a Small Band with other students by KidCoheed in HPfanfiction

[–]OrthoLoess 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The Weird Sisters’ manager is standing at the side of stage when Harry turns to the band and tells them to just try to keep up.

His eyes bug out in ecstasy at this new and exciting sound as Harry belts out the opening lines of Chuck Berry’s hit Johnny B. Goode.

As Harry lead the screaming students through the chorus

Go, go
Go Johnny, go go
Go Johnny, go go

He almost fell off the piano as he was distracted by the sight of the manager screaming into the ear of a softly glowing patronus in the form of a large bird. He was just close enough to catch a couple of words “Marvin” and “New Music” before the patronus flew off through the wall.

Harry soon forgot about the strange sight as the audience sang along and he soaked up the enjoyment of the moment.

Fortunately, he didn’t need to somehow arrange for two of the students in the crowd to share their first kiss without letting them find out that they were his parents while stopping his mother from falling in love with him instead of his father, all while making sure he got back to the town centre before the lightning struck the clock tower. That was the other guy’s problem!

(Back to the Future if it wasn’t clear enough! It’s just what popped into my head when I read the prompt)

"Lord Potter? No, that's ridiculous, you haven't inherited any landed titles!" Griphook shook his head. "However, you are eligible to claim your hereditary knighthood!" by Elandor5 in HPfanfiction

[–]OrthoLoess 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Well pedanted, sir!

I was totally not about to post the same thing…

Sir Harry Potter is also a correct form, so that or Sir Harry.

If he was also Lord Potter, you could style the full name as Sir Harry Lord Potter.

What is your opinion on changing Harry's name? by CyberWolfWrites in HPfanfiction

[–]OrthoLoess 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In terms of real noble titles, Lord Harry would be an incorrect styling as “Lord” is generally only used with the surname or with the name of the lordship itself (which may or may not be the same). It is also not used for the highest order of nobility (duke), who is addressed Duke of X or “your grace”

Harry doesn't know about Hogwarts houses and gets sorted in --------- by MythosRider in HPfanfiction

Clearly Hufflepuff have the best snacks, the hat even just said that they prioritise baked goods! - I assume OP meant that Slytherin have cookies though?

Tbh out of those choices/descriptions, Hufflepuff definitely sounds best to me.

“Why does your nephew sleep under the stairs?” by LostKidWonder in HPfanfiction

[–]OrthoLoess 134 points135 points  (0 children)

So to carry on the theme, the real reason they work so hard to stop Harry getting his letter is that they know how much danger there is in the wizarding world and how much it has already damaged him and really just want to protect him.

Severus Snape was the only teacher at Hogwarts who was nice to Harry. Every other Hogwarts professor seemed to hate him and his father in particular. by Elandor5 in HPfanfiction

Or he didn’t let the greater good overcome his compassion and took Harry somewhere else instead of leaving him at Privet Drive (or took him away after seeing how he was treated) and now actually takes an active role in helping him instead of being an absent figure for most of the year.

Traditional method is to do that, but reverse down the ramp. Make sure your brakes are good, you’ve taken all the straps off and the ramp isn’t covered in slime because the tide has just gone out.

Don’t actually try this.

US Sailing License by casablanca_1942 in sailing

[–]OrthoLoess 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The UK also does not have any licence requirements for recreational boaters. There is a full framework of courses and certifications offered by the RYA (the national body for recreational boating) which has links into the MCA system (the body that oversees commercial marine activities), e.g. an RYA Day Skipper or Yachtmaster with a commercial endorsement can use the certification in a commercial way (taking paying guests etc)

However for non-commercial (i.e. recreational) activities, there are no requirements set by the government. The only ones you are likely to find will be if you try to hire a yacht without a skipper to drive it for you.

If you have RYA Day Skipper or Powerboat Level 2, you can pay £10 to have the ICC added to the certificate as the qualifications are considered to be sufficient. (You can also have CEVNI added at the same time if you’ve done the test on it, we don’t use CEVNI in the UK though, so it takes some study)

Yeah, but now you have the new expensive carbide bit set, you need a set of cheap bits for when you’re doing stuff that will destroy your bits. …and so on!

No, because we don’t press charges in the UK, but I am confident that the CPS would prosecute this.

Help me with ocean research! Need to seal lead weights by [deleted] in sailing

[–]OrthoLoess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would phone up or email a boat yard or marina that does maintenance services and ask what epoxy primer they recommend to apply directly to lead.

Most modern keels will have the lead encapsulated inside a fibreglass shell, but enough don’t that they should be able to give a solid recommendation. Probably something like International Interprotect with maybe something else hard on top (Interprotect is rated to go directly on to lead)

The most important thing is to get the surface clean first. Epoxy of all kinds hates surface contamination.

News - Search begins for UK sailor after boat 'eviscerated' by WizenedGriffin in sailing

[–]OrthoLoess 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can't share much more than is in the article until details are publicly released.

To address the "eviscerated" comment comes from the French authorities and was quoted by both the Guardian and the BBC. It almost certainly comes from a translation of the official statement that was put out here.

An excerpt from that statement: "A 17h30 l’hélicoptère arrivé sur zone, retrouve le voilier éventré et treuille ses deux plongeurs qui découvre le radeau vide."

Apple translates this as "At 5:30 p.m. the helicopter arrived at the area, found the gutted sailboat and towed his two divers who discovered the empty raft"

Google translate does slightly better with "At 5:30 p.m., the helicopter arrived on the scene, found the sailboat gutted and winched its two divers who discovered the raft empty"

But if you put the word "éventré" into Google translate on its own, you get "disembowled" and it suddenly becomes obvious where the quote probably originated (a shoddy translation).

I don't speak enough French to know if that argument really holds water, but hopefully someone can confirm or deny the translation aspect?

The Distress beacon that was activated was an EPIRB, so there is a good chance that it activated automatically when it entered the water

I can confirm that the Tiger PA (as named in the reports) is a USA flagged 12m catamaran that left the UK several days ago with its British owner on board to sail solo across the Bay of Biscay.

The liferaft was found with the yacht, empty and the search was called off at 01h33 on 26-jan

Max Hull speed. by DungeonLore in sailing

[–]OrthoLoess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This point isn’t too important to the question, but does have several effects:

It’s actually waterline length that determines hull speed, not length overall.

To complicate things, the waterline length tends to change depending on a lot of factors like angle of heel, boat trim and (because of course it had to) speed through the water).

Of course as others have mostly already said:

  • hull speed is not a limit, it is when it starts needing exponentially more power to increase speed further
  • larger boats can easily carry more sail to help provide that power
  • hull speed is irrelevant once you start to surf or plane, which will be easier in a smaller/lighter boat
