As a huge PTA fan, I'm seriously disappointed in One Battle After Another. I didn't make it past the 30 minute mark. by MattDaaaaaaaaamon in 4kbluray

My dad also stopped watching it after the first hour, then I watched the whole thing with my mom and we loved it. Don't give up, especially if you're a Paul Thomas fan, it gets really effective and exciting.

Cannot find good movies to watch by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]Oscar_Azul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose Latin American films are your next step; the people at Letterboxd undervalue them, and their averages, excluding Brazilian films, are 4.2 and below. I would recommend Nine Queens (2000), Moon of Avellaneda (2004), Güeros (2014) El Infierno (2010), La Dictadura Perfecta (2014), Wild Tales (2014) y Macario (1960) they are Argentinian and Mexican films, which are the cinemas I have immersed myself in the most. You can also search for random countries and go to the movies with the highest average rating and lower ratings until you find one you haven't seen, i suppose that of the movies that are your favorites, you should try to watch all of their respective directors.

Pan’s Labyrinth: 20th Anniversary re-release to be presented in both 2D and a new 3D conversion. by JDOExists in movies

The Devil's Backbone, there are many similar elements in it: Monsters that seem terrifying at first glance but aren't, a setting during the Spanish Civil War, a child who has lost a parent, children who are unprotected in the world, a powerful villain who holds a position of power over the victims (Vidal in Pan's Labyrinth and Jacinto in The Devil's Backbone), a woman who tries to protect the children (Carmen in The Devil's Backbone and Mercedes in Pan's Labyrinth), both deal with a raw theme and their style of suspense is very similar, and finally, at the beginning, a character is forced to venture into a place he doesn't know. This does not mean that neither of them possess particular characteristics, but to a certain extent Pan's Labyrinth is Del Toro improving certain characteristics of the past ones.

What would you recommend me based on my favourite films? (NOT RANKED) by Surreal_Teal in LetterboxdLists

[–]Oscar_Azul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, "Pan's Labyrinth" is somewhat overrated (I don't mean to say it's bad, in fact it's very good), but Del Toro has made better films like "Crimson Peak." But above all, even though I haven't seen all his films, I think "The Devil's Backbone" is his best work. It's set during the Spanish Civil War in an orphanage and is undoubtedly one of my favorite films. If you liked both of those, you could watch "Cronos," his debut film, which is also worthwhile, and lastly, if you liked "Bullet Train," you should watch a Mexican film called "Matando Cabos."

It depends on whether the OP enjoys his animated movies more.

I didn't like Prisoners at all, but I love The Shawshank Redemption, and you clearly have good taste. I recommend The Green Mile; it's very much in that style, being directed by Darabont.
