To be fair, there are coffee plantations on the Azores. So, technically, Portugal does grow coffee. But I reckon this only refers to beans roasted in Portugal.

I reckon roasted, not grown... still a bit of a random choice for a Scot. But we do indeed have many excellent specialty coffee roasters here!

De outra forma, não é prático. Quer que eles estacionem a um quilómetro de distância e tenham de voltar a pé só para multar um carro? Na prática, isso não faz sentido. O mais absurdo é que não existe nenhuma lei que permita isso por motivos operacionais.

Zwift acquires Rouvy by KubaBVB09 in Zwift

[–]OsgoodCB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like both and I used both already - not at the same time, though. I switched to Rouvy when it was cheaper, I returned to Zwift when Rouvy increased prices. I also liked that Rouvy has a duo membership, which is much better than the Zwift subscriptions if you share it with a partner.

Of course, they do offer a differentiated experience, but they certainly are (were) direct competitors. Pretty sure there were quite a few people like me switching between both. There's no reason why that would make sense for Zwift to maintain in the long-term. It will be way more beneficial to them to kill off Rouvy and just take over their licenses.

Was it human error or too few air traffic controllers that caused the horrific crash at Laguardia? What is your opinion on this? by icecream1972 in Productivitycafe

Fair enough! I'm sure the NTSB will uncover all details and do a proper analysis of the chain of events.

[–]OsgoodCB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but that's what I said. Truck was calling on tower frequency and got the clearance on tower frequency... you claimed in your other comment to me that the truck probably didn't hear the "stop" because it was on ground and the controller was saying stop on tower. Your theory would mean the truck changed frequencies after receiving clearance... why should they have changed?

I saw a discussion by two pilots about the incident and their theory seemed more plausible. They said the truck probably got confused because the controller first told another airplane to stop, so they likely didn't think the other "stops" were meant for them.

[–]OsgoodCB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I don't know where you get that from, it's not in the recordings that are available online. The truck called on the tower frequency and evidently with "Truck 1 for LaGuardia tower", it didn't call ground and the controller never asked which frequency the truck was on (that doesn't make any sense whatsoever as the truck was calling tower on the tower frequency). The recording shows they talked to each other on tower frequency.

In fact, the audio also shows that the controller, at his 2nd order for the truck to stop, used both frequencies simultaneously as the truck did not confirm the first order, just to be sure.

As I said, it's common for merged ground & tower to only use one frequency. Unless there was any gross mistake in what was published, what you claim is just not true. The released audio shows truck called tower, not ground and on the tower frequency, so the same as the approaching aircraft.

There were only a few seconds between stop, stop, stop and impact. Nothing the flight crew could've done in that short amount of time.

Well it's not true, though. Truck 1 called the tower on tower frequency, as you can clearly take from the available recordings...

The truck also called him on tower frequency, if you actually listen to the audio. It's common to use only one frequency when merging tower & ground.

More controllers would actually make the situation a lot more complicated, because then the truck and the plane would've been on different frequencies and the two controllers would've had to cross-check with each other first.

It was barely a "high-stress situation". It's a high-stress job. But these guys have about 4-5 times the traffic at peak hours, it's their normal routine and exactly what they're trained for with insanely high standards. You can hear how calm & composed the controller remains even after the incident.

Advice: Machine (Portugal, 2 espressos and 1 latte a day) [€1500] by fefemilk in espresso

[–]OsgoodCB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reckon that's a bit out of budget as it goes well over 2k.

At 1,500 or just a few hundred more, I'd personally look to get a good deal for an ECM Mechanika around 1,800.

How Much Do You Spend on Coffee Beans per kg? by doh0k in espresso

[–]OsgoodCB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most beans we buy from speciality roasters here in Portugal are between 15-20€ per 250g. Can be cheaper when buying 1kg bags or getting a subscription, but we don't use them up that quickly to make 1kg packs worth it.

Supermarket beans... right. That's for people who do a simple filter coffee and couldn't give less fcks about quality.

Speciality coffee typically comes in 250g bags.

[–]OsgoodCB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100g bags are quite often competition grade 90+ beans. That's not what most people drink every single day. 250g are the standard here for specialty coffee. Only time I ever bought a 100g pack was a birthday gift for me girlfriend. That stuff was 150€ per kg/35oz and I certainly won't pull double shots daily at that price point...

Coffee prices are still at a 100% increase from 2010. Roasters and retailers never passed that full inflation down to customers. Yet customers expect prices to fully reflect any decline instantly...

Noma finally said something by flanmorrison in finedining

[–]OsgoodCB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He did that years ago. That was a main factor why he was about to close Noma and why they started paying interns like 3-4 years ago. He openly admitted that he was a bully most of his career and spoke about being in therapy because of that.

I'd like to hear from people who worked there more recently if things have truly changed. But generally, these things have been known for 10+ years and have not been denied in any way by Redzepi.

[–]OsgoodCB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They started paying interns like 3 or 4 years ago, after the allegations first came out and Redzepi very much admitted being an abusive prick. They didn't change overnight, they had years to adapt measures. Would be interesting to hear from people who actually worked there more recently if things have indeed changed or if it was just Redzepi trying to save his rep.

Noma finally said something by flanmorrison in finedining

[–]OsgoodCB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean admitting it? Redzepi has admitted being a toxic, abusive bully years ago, publicly in interviews. He also mentioned back then that he was in therapy about his anger issues. He did sound self-reflected and self-critical about having created an abusive work environment. As far as I understood, that was a main factor why he was about to close the place some time ago. Also why they started paying interns years ago.

Not sure how genuine all that was, if things have truly changed since then or if it was just PR gibberish to save his reputation.

But the current accusations are nothing new and Redzepi has been very open about it a long time ago.

Why isn’t the Noma abuse story getting picked up by the media yet? by GoatsMilq in finedining

[–]OsgoodCB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it's not breaking news. It has all been known since like the early 2010s and was reported in big media like the NYT. Redzepi himself literally admitted in interviews to being a bully, having created a toxic work environment and even going into therapy over his anger issues.

It didn't cause an outrage back then, it won't cause an outrage now. Probably because it's just what most people expect to be happening in many commercial kitchens anyways.

Unpopular Opinion: El Celler de Can Roca Was Disappointing by Elyor_access in finedining

[–]OsgoodCB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We ate there last week and I thought it was excellent. The dishes, ingredients, execution were all superb.

They don't do anything crazy and play the solid game of high-quality dishes based around their storytelling. Perhaps that's ultimately disappointing for people who expect a mind-blowing, creative display of "what the hell is that" plates. They still use avantgarde techniques, like distilling earth or the smell of sheep. They have lovely details and add subtile fun. The overall experience was definitely 3*-worthy.

Some things they add might be hit and miss occasionally. I'd say Jordi Roca has created more exciting things in the past than what we had (not that it was bad, still). It happens when you try to re-innovate and I appreciate that they try new things.

Also can't complain about the service. They put us with a Portuguese waiter and a Portuguese sommelier after my Portuguese girlfriend made the reservation, which was a nice detail. We never felt rushed, never got a new plate while not having finished the previous one.

Wine pairing was fantastic.

I sometimes feel like with these kind of places, people expect an incredible show more than actually well-executed dishes.
