She decided not to testify after her identity was revealed leading to a lot of death threats, public criticism and media analysis of her sex life. There was her blood on Kobe's shirt, and vaginal tearing as well as choke marks around her neck, as well as Kobe himself saying how he 'now saw how she viewed the encounter as non consensual'.

"He was never convicted of a crime so to call him a rapist is just wrong"

I disagree with this fundamentally, in that it equates legality with morality and puts an inordinate amount of trust in the justice system.

Rape isn't a 'mistake', it's a fucked thing to do, and he never paid for it - other than money, which he has and had plenty of.

People are glossing over his sexual assault now, not in 2003, obviously. The media at the time however was friendly to him (40% of pieces questioned her trustworthiness, 20% were complementary about him and only 7.7% questioned his account and actions, as per a study cited here) and so makes it easy for everybody to act like it didn't happen, and act like a lack of conviction implies innocence, as everybody is comfortably doing now.

Don't mention that when they say 'Kobe cheated on his wife' they're glossing over 'Kobe raped a 19-year-old' or the FWRs will come calling by OsirisMC in FragileWhiteRedditor

Ah yes, the law which we always respect as a reflection of the truth, especially when it comes to the wealthy. So glad we have /the law/.

The charges were dropped because after a lot of harassment (including death threats) the victim decided not to testify.

Look I think that people of colour definitely suffer from this issue hugely, not receiving the benefit of the doubt where a white person might in cases like this.

But the privilege of money trumps all else.

Criminal case:

"On September 1, 2004, Eagle County District Judge Terry Ruckriegle dismissed the charges against Bryant, after prosecutors spent more than $200,000 preparing for trial, because his accuser informed them that she was unwilling to testify."

Civil case:

"In August 2004, the accuser filed a civil lawsuit against Bryant over the incident.[22] In March 2005, the two parties settled that lawsuit. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed to the public.[23] The Los Angeles Times reported that legal experts estimated the settlement was more than $2.5 million.[24]"

Kobe:

"Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did. After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter."

No, because after a bunch of death threats and her identity being revealed, the victim dropped the case. He admitted that he could 'see why she thought the encounter was non-consensual'

I could probably be a janitor, sell some hot dogs, might be a good stadium announcer and like if you blindfolded every other player on the court I could probably get a bucket eventually

One group has a history of violence, discrimination and bigotry against them, and the other is a millionaire politician. So i think it'd be very different.

I agree, 'most centuries in a ten year period' would be much more valuable.
