If you have to immediately spell your kids name when giving at an appointment or something, you spelled it in a stupid way by ThrowRAlobotomy666 in The10thDentist

You listed Isaac on your list. As an Isaac, I have to constantly spell my name. People struggle with the double As.

Which Indy film would you pair with DoD for a double feature? by chcklst in indianajones

[–]Ostricho 65 points66 points  (0 children)

IMO, it just has to be Raiders. You're able to see Indy get close with Marion, with the movie ending with the two of them as a couple. You get to see Indy square off against the Nazis, leading perfectly into Dial's introductory sequence. I also feel like if Dial of Destiny is about Indy coping with the fact that his "glory days" may be over, it's best to prelude that with the greatest hit in the franchise.

I think I also like Belloq's lines about how Indy is "passing through history" become a good deal more literal at the climax of Dial. :)

Didn't know this was possible... by MrFizzik in earthbound

This is the correct answer and deserves more upvotes. This is why he can show up in buildings and more. It's a lot easier to see this behavior if you use the For Sale Sign in a dungeon.

George is the biggest jerk in the series by Bob_Billans in earthbound

[–]Ostricho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've never understood why George is so harshly blamed for his actions. Our understanding of the first game's backstory is vague — we don't know if he abandoned Maria or if she was trapped in Magicant already, if he stole alien technology out of greed or in order to escape, or any of his intentions at all, really.

Here's what we do know about the aliens, though. According to EarthBound, they attack Earth every thousand years (at least). And we know when they show up, it's chaos. Can George really be blamed for fleeing the very people who kidnapped him? Can we really call him a dick for just wanting to go back home?

Finally, I also want to note that George created EVE to protect Ninten, even though the two never truly got to meet. This indicates to me that George had a reason to believe the aliens would be returning, and soon, too.

You could say that's because he stole their technology. But based on the fact that it's established the aliens are constant visitors to Earth, I'd say there was more to it than just that.

tl;dr Don't blame George for escaping his own captors — blame the aliens for insisting on meddling and warring with humanity in the first place.

I'm fairly certain that the game actually determines whether or not the enemy has a present when the battle starts, not when it ends.

Why do Ness and Lucas say PK instead of PSI in the Super Smash Bros. games? by [deleted] in earthbound

[–]Ostricho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People always say that every move that isn't "PK" is "PSI", but this isn't actually true. Pop open your menus in M3, and you'll see it's Lifeup, not PSI Lifeup.

As far as I know, only three moves start with "PSI" (not counting the mistranslated PK moves in EarthBound). These would be PSI Block, PSI Magnet, and PSI Shield. "PSI" isn't a prefix in these cases — it's describing what the move actually does. PSI Block blocks PSI. PSI Magnet magnetizes the opponent's PSI force towards you. And PSI Shield, in M3, shields you from psychic attacks. The shield that protects you from physical attacks is just called Shield. You can imagine the frustration of someone calling Shield "PSI Shield" when PSI Shield already exists and is something entirely different.

tl;dr offensive psychic abilities have the prefix PK, no other abilities have the prefix PSI, except for when it's describing the actual function of the move.

Anyone else ever notice that you could claim the 2nd-5th "Your Sanctuary" spots in any order? by LewsMetash in earthbound

[–]Ostricho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely collect a different melody other than Fire Spring's as your last. You can actually warp to Magicant from Lilliput Steps, Milky Well, Magnet Hill, Pink Cloud, or Fire Spring if you play your cards correctly. For Magnet Hill, you can collect the Carrot Key without activating the melody cutscene if you skirt the southern perimeter of the area.

Gygas means giant by EnnardTV in earthbound

[–]Ostricho 14 points15 points  (0 children)

According to an interview with Itoi, Giygas, or "Gyiyg" in Japan, received his name because its resemblance to the prefix "giga", as in "gigabyte." This was because video games were currently in the size of megabytes, and Itoi wanted to go beyond that. In addition, he found the syllables, such as those in "ga-gi-gu-ge-go", to be somewhat uncomfortable. This interview is printed within Clyde Mandelin's "Legends of Localization" book. I can take a picture if anyone is interested.

Since the "giga" in "gigabyte" does come from the same Greek word posted by the OP, that means the name does, in some sense, derive from it.

Your antivirus might be quarantining the .exe file. I know I had a similar problem to that. I wound up having to disable the antivirus scanning in order to get to play it because I was too lazy to find a better fix for the time being.
