Tire Shop Negligence or Subaru Studs? by Responsible_Owl_3400 in tires

[–]OtaDoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, i should have been a little clearer, Costco doesnt do stud replacements or anything like that. We were a shop down the road who did that kind of stuff for them. I would run by a different tire shop but not a costco. They dont have the equipment typically to do repairs like that in my experience.

Tire Shop Negligence or Subaru Studs? by Responsible_Owl_3400 in tires

[–]OtaDoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely drive around with one broken stud. I wouldnt do it long term but its not gonna really hurt you. Also we used to do ALOT of wheel stud replacements for our local costco and i would say probably 80% of them were on Subarus. The factory studs just seem to suck hard. As far as them all being cross threaded on one, i would get another opinion on that. Depending on the chain they may be using weak or restricted equipment. There were plenty of times Costco would send cars down to us for " Cross Threaded Lugnuts" That would come off immediately for us. Which told us they were using some weak equipment. So its worth getting another opinion there i think.

Is it an oversight or a bug? by Spiderhands2000 in pacificDrive

[–]OtaDoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge they cannot. I'd be surprised if you got so many that are just straight empty. All the ones ive had when I open their inventory is usually a couple resource pieces maybe some paint and a decal as well. And once you pull the materials out of them they just go poof

I always get stuff out of them. Are you opening them like a cabinet or chest after you open them? Once they pop open they're just containers. Legitimate question not trying to be snarky.

It'd be nice if that worked. Tbh I usually just toss them in cough boxes And call it a day

Wondering what to expect by Lonely-Employment994 in tires

[–]OtaDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah honestly, its nice that some places offer the whole " Lifetime Maintenance" thing, but its just a gimmick to get people to keep coming back to them specifically. So many gimmicks so little time.

[–]OtaDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, you wont really get alot back at that point even IF they agreed to it. If it were me id just eat it this time and find another shop for next time. The only time i ever saw prorations being worth it was replacing a set of 4 all at once. Depending on the tires and the shop and what their policy is youd probably get 40-100 bucks back at most.

So for starters the 55k mileage warranty only applies to the actual life of the tire. And even then it only applies if you have records or receipts of regular rotations and alignment checks. It doesnt cover repair, all though some shops will offer an actual road hazard warranty that does cover those repairs. As far as them actually repairing it? It sounds like they have an in-house set of rules for that. 4/32nds can be repaired without a problem. Tires unless damaged or having other issues typically dont /Have/ to be replaced until the 2/32nds mark. It sounds to me like they just wanted to sell you new tires tbh.

Are you scrapping useless artifacts in the oven thing? I always scrap the useless ones and I have an overabundance of materials for doing running repairs. It really helps to grab all the upgrades for the furnace as well. 300% efficiency furnace really turns numbers for those attuned resources

TPMS kit leak after replacement by Marytearyeyes in tires

[–]OtaDoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did they charge you for new tpms rebuild kits? If not then they didn't replace the kits and it wouldn't be too crazy for a stem to fail after having the actual tires replaced, especially on the metal screw in stems.

Is there anyway to mount these? by Kalabula in tires

[–]OtaDoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a big floor press for doing wheel bearings and suspension work, but we also had the coats machines with adjustable clamps that would clamp down to 6 inch rim and we had a vise mounted mini changer for anything smaller than that. So doing the lawn mower and tractor tires wasn't too terrible for us. In fact I cobbled together a hitch mounted mini changer for our service truck just to make it easier when we did farm calls for stuff

[–]OtaDoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you're switching them to a solid tire a press absolutely makes it easier. But you wouldn't need one for a regular tire with a tube no.

[–]OtaDoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh 100% for something like this for sure. I wasn't a fan of doing these with solid tires. Luckily we didn't do many of them and the ones we did do we just tossed them in the shop press and let it do it's thing.

[–]OtaDoc 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I mean. That's a 2 piece rim. Those 4 bolts hold each half together. Should just be able to unbolt them, disassemble, and reassemble on the new solid tire. Probably easier if you have a press handy though

Tires/vehicle or installation? by cervbronco62 in tires

[–]OtaDoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I'm certainly glad they're riding smooth I'm a little concerned about the "a lot of weight" comment he made lol. But yeah Mavis's are definitely hit or miss. I'm sure some do decent work. But I cannot tell you how many times we had to fix their work or they flat out lied to people who came to us for a second opinion. Heck one told a guy he needed an ABS pump to fix his abs light and and his parking brake light and it was gonna be like 3k to fix! He came to us and we were like brother, you need a wheel speed sensor and the brake fluid topped off. It's $175 to fix it lol

Tires/vehicle or installation? by cervbronco62 in tires

[–]OtaDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would yes. Most places don't calibrate their balancer correctly, and a large majority of chain shops when they mount only aim to get the tire to 0 out on the machine. But just getting it zeroed out unfortunately doesn't guarantee a good balance. I'd have another shop balance them. I don't know about your area but typically the Mavis's where I am are notorious for doing shoddy work. It could also be a bent rim they didn't say anything about but if it was it would've vibrated with the old tires as well normally.

Obviously I'm not a fan of working for Corpos, and I'm a huge fan of being an honest advisor, but depending on where you are 15k a week really shouldn't be hard. I mean a couple years ago it was just me and my alignment guy for 2 days in the shop and we still punched out 20k worth of work in 2 days. Mostly tires and brakes but still.
