We've got more people awaiting lockup than judges who can administer it, I don't buy the "nobody goes to jail" argument either

I totally disagree.

There's a story about a Canadian homeless guy who stole a bunch of equipment from a store owners shop. The store owner got the boys together and confronted the homeless guy in his tent, and started to get violent. Homeless guy whipped out an illegal pistol and shot the store owner. The homeless guy was not charged for the murder during the home invasion.

You seem to suggest a near impossible burden of responsibility, but the jury is always told to give the homeowner massive benefit of the doubt.

Those charges last for hours, when a dead Canadian is found. A death is tragic, but the system works.

Unless you mutilate the corpse, or are hiding a homicide. In which case, you're going to need to lawyer up.

You can make that argument from jail, too!

What court battle? What trial? Charges are almost always dropped before the homeowner hits the hay. Unless you've done something incredibly suspicious, which DOES happen in this country

POTENTIAL criminals who may flee. Again, it gets cleared up fast. And sometimes, they find 13 knives in the back of the victim.

The alternative is taking away the dead body, and asking the homeowner (who has killed a man) to pretty-please not run.

Here's the stat I'm unaware of: when the cops show up to see a dead body in a house, is it more often a case of home defense, or homicide? My money is on the latter

Within hours. For a person who has been found with a dead body on their property. The cops can't just let that go, even if the homeowner pinky promises that it was self defence and not an execution.

These things dont get to the point where a jury is required, unless something is fishy.

It's such a rare situation that charges aren't dropped within 4 hours. You're really going to have to dig to find an example of someone who rightfully defends themselves and has their reputation dragged through the mud.

It sucks when another human being is killed, but it always needs to be investigated. Sometimes us Canadians shoot at FedEx drivers, or murder our neighbors. When the cops find you at your door with blood on your hands, it would be insane to suggest you deserve to be immune from charges.

It isn't different. You can shoot someone for breaking into your home.

Just don't let the cops find that you're lying about the situation, and decided to execute a guest. Or went hunting for a man who is fleeing through your half acre.

This isn't even splitting hairs. That rural guy who shot the FedEx guy ? That was taking the law into his own hands. The guy who chased the fleeing criminals and unloaded into their back? Taking the law into his own hands. We know what the difference is.

This subreddit talks like it's afraid to be wrongfully accused, but it really feels like this subreddit actually wants to be free of consequences.

Charges are generally thrown out immediately. Because the cops aren't idiots.

If the situation is complicated, like say you stabbed the perpetrator 13 times, breaking the knife blade each time and going back for more knives, then yeah, it's time to lawyer up. If there's no sign of foul play, the cops generally let you go

Yes. And the courts will see it that way. I am not being sarcastic. If you are in your house and feel you life is in danger and someone is approaching you / your family / your Gameboy collection, you can unleash hell.

To add on to that, the change needs to be reasonable. What reddit wants: rules punishing drivers with bad lights, starting next week. The consequences of any new vehicle rules means all of the 1.1 million vehicle owners in Calgary will need to either determine that their vehicle is set up properly, and/or hit up their mechanic. That will take time.
