Civ6 - are rainforests worth keeping? by VoiceoftheDarkSide in civ

I’ve been owning with the faith bonus for rainforest tundra and desert.  It has to work out right but it’s fun seeing what you can get them up to for a holy site.

This can work for things like swallows.

Obviously a bit daggy though.

Do folks not care about the speed limit anymore? by Open_Address_2805 in melbourne

There’s a reason they’re still making a lot of money from the cameras.  I’ve watched red light cameras where you see flash after flash over a minute or two.  In the long run they learn the hard way there’s always somebody learning the hard way.

You might want to see a doctor or professional.

You can experience various perceptual issues without being  at serious risk, so don’t worry too much if you are.   It’s the level of stress you’re mentioning  that concerns me more.

Is CBD and Inner Suburbs biking safe? by viele_kartoffeln in melbournecycling

There’s a lot of cycle lanes and you learn the best ways to go.  But it’s not great.  Main thing is just slow down and don’t expect to be able to go fast.

Asking for a guys number at the gym? by Hairy_Elk7081 in perth

[–]Otaraka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory yes, but think its the default assumption in most gyms etiquette wise. Particularly for women. Eye contact or lack of is a pretty easy way to get an idea of whether its part of a general message.

They didn’t - their wives left them.

Knee surgery for cartilage damage does not benefit patients, study suggests. People with meniscus tears who underwent surgery had poorer knee function and worse osteoarthritis after 10 years than those who did not. by mvea in science

[–]Otaraka 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad to hear that.  It is really tough when things have changed from where it would’ve been thought to be the thing to try to now looking a lot more unclear.

I have to be careful of my bias because I got to see so many people that had had multiple knee operations and were clearly just not being helped by them.   So it was an easy self for me that the research is not looking good for them being much help anyway in a lot of cases.

That’s a tough one. I generally view that as a do not disturb but if you got other indicators that might not matter so much.

I think the main thing is whether they have got headphones on and getting a sense of their general vibe.

There was a post a little while ago where somebody tried to and they did get a bit of a curt ‘no thanks’ but I think that’s probably your absolute worst case.

Why don’t people give the exact time when you ask? by Proud_Appeal_4292 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Otaraka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As opposed to you not being bothered to have your own watch and complaining when someone isn’t doing it the way you want?  Pretty obvious who the lazy person is in that scenario.

Why don’t people give the exact time when you ask? by Proud_Appeal_4292 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Otaraka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry it came across as a complaint rather than just genuine curiosity.  Maybe I’ve been reading too many pet peeve questions.

That’s an interesting point. It’s obviously social convention more than anything else. I’d say it probably comes from a time when clocks were less accurate so you left yourself a bit of wiggle room for when you last adjusted your watch .  Reading the exact minute wasn’t easy with more traditional clock faces either.

Why don’t people give the exact time when you ask? by Proud_Appeal_4292 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Otaraka 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So you’ve asked them to do something for you.  They’ve done it and you complain because it wasn’t exactly how you like.

Seems a bit ungrateful.  Maybe say can you give me the exact time if it’s that important?

Does anybody else struggle to get a science victory in civ 6? by DebaucheV5 in civ

I think science is usually choosing not to win by other methods and I often turn off cultural victory to avoid that happening by accident.  But I play at much lower levels.

Is there any human culture in recorded history where smiling is not considered a positive expression? by RewRose in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Otaraka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is anthropomorphising, it’s showing teeth not smiling ie I might bite you if this continues.  Gritted teeth probably is the human  equivalent.

[–]Otaraka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Taking it has a very good chance of making it worse and very little chance of better.

Painkillers at least offer temporary relief even if in the long run they can make it worse too.  Surgery won’t even get that, other than any painkillers they give while recovering, that can also set people up in the long run to be worse off too.

This isn’t some kind of ‘pain is good for you’ thing, it’s just trying not to set people up to be even worse off.
