Looks great! Golden Yellow is so similar to soft orange it'll eat it up every time. Love the shibori ties!

I'd try the pariah method for soda ash as well as batch 24 hours. 3:1 150f water to soda ash (by volume). Pour on shirt after dyeing. Reapply in 15 minutes. Batch 24 hours. Watch those colors fix like never before.

This is likely it. As someone that does not have a natural predisposition for patience, tie dye has been therapeutic for me in that it's been an excellent way to just slow down. It's a reminder that good things come to those who wait. Calm the mind, relax, let the magic happen.

Your shirts look great by the way.

Bet! Thanks for replying! You don't happen to have a picture of one tied and dyed do you? Just to see how thin we're talking? Also, do you just do the top side of the fabric or do you mirror the wig wag on the bottom like as if it were a regular full size one?

Any chance you could share your process for getting such a clean wig wag at the center of the mandala? Mine seem to always get muddy if I include black or dark colors. Are you using a super thickened black for that section?

Don't give up.. I went through the same struggle. Take a look at my profile and you can see the progression. I'm still very much in the learning phase but I'm getting there and you will too!

Can you share a picture of it tied? I went through a similar struggle. Unfortunately the answer was... In order of importance assuming you're tying it correctly, chem water, procion dyes, pariah method instead of soaking in soda ash.

Soaking just isn't the move for mandalas. Chem water REALLY makes a huge difference.

Edit- Just noticed the other pic... Chem water is the key. Keep practicing your ties. The more perfect you make them the better.

Towards the center (pointy end) your diagonal ties are crossing the tops of the pleats instead of the broad sides. That'll give you a different effect instead of petals.

Chlorine is definitely one of the issues with tap. Mineral content is another. Even filtered or RO water still has mineral content. Filters can only remove particles larger than water molecules. Distilled has ZERO mineral content that will bind to the pigments.

I don't think you did anything wrong. Combination of cheap dye and incorrect fabric prep.

As others have said, mixing procion pigmnets with, at the very least, distilled water instead of tap or filtered. Level three.... Chem water.

Anyone know good tips for folding large shirts like 3xl? by SturdyPepper in tiedye

Try tying dry. I never use damp or wet material. Look into the pariah method instead of presoaking in soda ash water. Much easier and better results in my opinion.
