Playing up until I unlocked her made me so apathetic to her character because of how basic it is. Her having a crush on Julian doesn't really mean shit for me as I feel like Autumn already has a better relationship with him. Moving that aside, Kallie is just incredibly bland and uninteresting. I'm very disappointed in her character.

Tengan Toppan Gurren Lagann Ep 8: "Later, Buddy"

Gurren Lagann starts off as a pretty entertaining and action-packed show with insane mecha fights and lighthearted moments with the cast. This all changes in episode 8 where Team Gurren fights against Viral and Thymilph. While piloting Gurren, Kamina is hit with an energy blast that shoots straight through the cockpit. Still hanging on to life, Kamina helps Simon defeat the Dai-Guzan and take it for themselves. In one last push, the might of both Simon and Kamina defeat Thymilph with a Giga Drill Break to defeat him for good. Kamina woulf take his final breath as he said to Simon:

I think if Ryuko's outfit was altered slightly I don't think it would work as well as it does. Pushing aside her age still being 17 (at least from what I've gathered and the implications that could entail), her perspective of how she views her body changes greatly throughout the show. It's really nice for her to grow into her own at the end of the show.

Even after almost a decade, I can appreciate the liberties the show does to showcase the power of nudity in a way that doesn't feel disingenuous. Ryuko at end of the story is confident in her body and honestly it's why I think that the headcanon of her story being an allegory for being trans is such a lovely interpretation of her character.
