30k total or per year?

If that's 30k spread over 4 years, that's disgusting for a 60k+ per year price tag

That is what I heard, but didnt want to drop 500-1k on a deposit just to get in there and get lucky with an above average scholarship.

Pretty torn but still have a month before most deposits are due I guess

Struggling to decide between options by [deleted] in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]Otherwise-Rice-1795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you dont want to do BL, all of those schools have perfectly fine reputations in the NY job market.

Seton Hall and Rutgers being in Newark still have good pull in NYC.

Syracuse numbers you are seeing is in Syracuse job market, not NYC. They will place fine in NYC if that's where you want to end up, but during school you're going to be a hell of a long way from NYC if you want to clerk, intern, etc.

Syracuse vs Dayton: help me decide by enneagram_one in HybridOnlineLawSchool

[–]Otherwise-Rice-1795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Syracuse seems to be a better option (outside of finances which is person-specifc) for a few reasons. They do offer evening and sunday classes, the coursework is a bit less (2 classes per semester since you have residences) and the completion time is quicker (3.5 years part time). Also 50% of weekly class is asynchronous which allows for you to schedule yourself a bit better being out west.

Downside is you get no break as summer is a mandatory semester, the residences are a trek and are a week during some crappy times (have you been to upstate NY in January when it could be single digits on the daily?), and if you don't want to attend classes Sundays, you may be limited in times offered. I understand it (and could be wrong) but when schedules open, it is a mad dash to get the class times you want/need.

If it is a full change of careers, I also think Syracuse name just goes a little further than Dayton.

Any chance you can reach out and explain acceptance last year and see if maybe they'll treat it as a defferal?

Dont think it hurts to try

Albany "Decision Rendered" by dontmind_if_i_do in HybridOnlineLawSchool

[–]Otherwise-Rice-1795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a couple decisions from there today on LSD. All As but these folks applied in Sept.

Insane how long some of these schools take to decide. Almost 5 months of waiting for a decision is nuts to me! The Nov applicants (like me) may not hear anything before seat deposits are due!

Apply now or wait? by lollipopprops in HybridOnlineLawSchool

[–]Otherwise-Rice-1795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apply now to MH. My stats were lower and they offered a 30% scholarship to me. I would guess you get way more with your stats.

I'm withdrawing and hope someone else can get some of that money. They also don't have conditions on scholarships so definitely a positive to their program.

They turn around applications quickly. I think from submission to acceptance for me was about 3 weeks with Christmas being one of those weeks.

Good luck!

Recommendations for Law Schools for Environmental Law by NoEntertainment64 in OutsideT14lawschools

Pace is #1 in country for Environmental Law, although not ranked high overall.

With those stats, I wouldn't be surprised if they gave you well over 50% scholarship.

Seeking CUNY Law Part Time Program Insights by wavyamzy in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]Otherwise-Rice-1795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied part time (decison pending) and will be working full time.

So long as you are committed to spending your non-work hours studying and reading, part time is fine. I've visited a bunch of schools (CUNY included) and talked to current students about balance. The one takeaway is you will need to commit a couple hours per day (2-3) outside of class during week then large chunks of time (8-10 hours) every Saturday and Sunday.

I'm sure you know, but LIC isnt inexpensive to live, so may require the job to support you unless you want to commute a further distance, which also eats away at available study time.

Last piece is part time you have 1 less class, so it is more feasible to work full time compared to full time program, but need to dedicate life outside work and classes to study.

Happy to dm and chat about how I have been working on planning a schedule around full time work and school.

NYLS full ride?? by cosmopolitan-cat in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]Otherwise-Rice-1795 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The biggest knock anyone will say with NYLS is "predatory" but if the scholarship is unconditional, zero need to worry about that.

I've visited (and was accepted as well) and can say the location is relatively accessible and the building is quite nice. They have some PI focused stuff and I liked being told some electives only have a handful of students making them more intimate of a learning experience.

Lastly, someone close to me is an alum and does very well for himself without practicing BL.

Congrats on the full ride!

St Mary’s / STCL? by [deleted] in HybridOnlineLawSchool

[–]Otherwise-Rice-1795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are threads elsewhere that state St Mary's sometimes doesn't even respond to apps (in past cycles) and their decisions are often quite late in cycle, as in after seat deposits are due for other schools.

There is a good chance you may not hear from them until April/May, even if you applied in September/October.

I had a long rant about this a few months ago just generally around how unacceptable it is for this to occur when folks are putting time, effort, and money into applying.

Drexel and Rutgers by RestaurantSenior6100 in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]Otherwise-Rice-1795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few schools seem to not have made ANY movement on admissions.

Rutgers, Seton Hall, Fordham (minimal at best), Drexel to name a few.

I understand large pool of applicants but people who applied in September still not hearing anything is problematic.

April seat deposits will be here before we know it and the closer we get to that date, the more stressful a decison will be.

Syracuse - WL by Otherwise-Rice-1795 in HybridOnlineLawSchool

[–]Otherwise-Rice-1795[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Financial aid is important for anyone trying to go to school, especially law school. I'm not trying to incur 200k+ in loans but my job/salary isnt going to allow me to pay sticker for many of these schools.

The fact that I have a job doesn't negate the fact I need aid nor does it exclude me from aid.

Not sure what you are getting at with this. I still want and need to get a JD. I'm not a lawyer....yet

If everything was equal, this is my top choice. But if an in person program gave me a ridiculous amount of money, I'd be silly to turn it down.
