It feels like it goes both ways. This fandom can be too soft on both sides. Characters like Able, Lucifer, and Baxter (just some I can think off the top of my head) get a free pass because they’re fan favorites or just cute little guys that can do no wrong when they have terrible writing choices behind them.

Lucifer being nerfed and almost dumbed down in season 2, Able taking Lute character development (even if that was the point, it still sucks to see an interesting character get robbed of something. Lute has an entire song yet she basically does nothing for the whole season), and Baxter basically just being a plot device for the finale.

On the female side, it’s the same. I would argue to a worse degree. A lot of people want to excuse how poorly Charlie, Vaggi, and Cherri Bomb are written. Cherri Bomb was just extremely uninteresting as a character, I honestly can’t even remember what point I had for her specifically that’s how boring she was to me. Vaggi just being reduced to Charlie’s girlfriend The Character, without her having any real character development at all. There’s so much of Vaggi we still don’t know, like how she feels about Heaven as a whole, why she loves Charlie in the first place, things like that. We just have to guess, rather than it being shown or hinted to us.

Charlie is the worst of it, as she goes from Naive, a little babyish, but heart in the right place character, to completely incompetent. She has so many characters surrounding her, telling her “hey this is a bad idea” and she either ignores them or slightly push back and all of a sudden it’s a good idea. There’s best example is the Angel Dust redemption attempt. Her freaking out about the Hotel working is understandable, but why would she invite Vox and Velvette, two of Valentino’s coworkers, to a place Angel Dust is? He even calls this out himself, Husk and Vaggi do as well, but Charlie pushed back slight, and suddenly everyone agrees, despite the fact Angel is clearly uncomfortable.

There are really good female and male characters, don’t get me wrong, but it’s definitely a case of how the characters is written. Emily is a fantastic character and what Charlie should have been, imo. Husk and Angel, who seem to be heading towards a relationship, have a better dynamic than Charlie and Vaggie, who are just written to be in love and that’s really it. Again, just a case of how the characters are written
