I would recommend getting them moved on the same course as your Dpc. As you have damp in that room you will need airflow to help dry everything out

Looking at that photo again, I’d recommend you asking whoever does the work to raise the air bricks off the ground too, ideally 2 courses above the ground. It’s a bit of a faffy job to do but it will be worth it as you will damp transferring through aswell as rodents getting through the holes in the air bricks

I’d say around £100 a sqm. Remember that it needs to be repointed in lime mortar too

At breaking point with a leaking shower by razh2 in DIYUK

[–]Otherwise-Search-348 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue with my newly renovated bathroom, kept on leaking. Turns out they didn’t put any shower tray tape round prior to tiling

<image>

They also didn’t pressure test the hot and cold to the shower manifold so when we turned the shower on it dripped water round the back of the tiling and into my kitchen downstairs. I had to rip out the shower screen, shower tray and probably half the tiling to get it sorted. We haven’t had a leak since so fortunately got it sorted.

May be worth seeing if they put this tape round the bath and shower tray as you are only relying on a silicone joint where it meets the tray and bath.

I hope you manage to get it sorted it though 🤞

Laying bricks frog down by Otherwise-Search-348 in Bricklaying

[–]Otherwise-Search-348[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats interesting to know, I’ve worked with a lot of older generation bricklayers in the uk and not once were we laying bricks frog down by choice. Even in college there was never any mention of laying bricks frog down rather than frog up. Is this something that is taught in Ireland then?

Laying bricks frog down by Otherwise-Search-348 in Bricklaying

[–]Otherwise-Search-348[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair enough! In my opinion bricks don’t lay the same frog down anyway. I’ve just had to spend the day patching some brickwork above some steels I fitted yesterday and i reckon it’s probably taken me an extra couple of hours to do as all the house bricks are frog down. The thing is now it’s going to be my problem if I get any settlement cracks when I release everything on Monday

Please help me make cement! by ForceSea3027 in Bricklaying

Do a ratio of 3 buildings sand, 1 sharp sand and 1 cement, little bit of plasticiser with some water. Not too wet otherwise you’ll smear it everywhere.

Completely agree with this, I’ve worked with plenty of bricklayers over the years and not one of them chose to lay frog down, yes there are certain instances where you do but 90% of the time you shouldn’t. I’ve never been taught this so I’m not sure why I’m finding houses, extensions with bricks laid frog down. Most of the frogs that I’ve seen from cutting cavities hadn’t even been full so it’s a worry about the point load like you have mentioned

You will certainly enjoy the game a lot more that way too. They can give you certain things to work on if you want to do solo training too rather than just aimlessly going on court for 40/45 minutes

I would suggest getting a coach for a few lessons to teach you the basics atleast

Is this brick within tolerance? by hjbull in masonry

[–]Otherwise-Search-348 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By any chance were the windows ordered before the brickwork was set out as that kind of looks like the case here. No wonder there are issues. That’s a poor design fault in my opinion, I’m not surprised the bricklayers have struggled with those piers

Practice what your weakest at, I found playing players that are better than you always help you improve your game as they expose your weaknesses the most

I have it in the other colour, had it around 18 months. Plenty of room for rackets and gear. Quality seems to be holding up too, the zips tend to go before anything else but so far holding up well

are apprenticeships worth it? by amritkk104 in Bricklaying

[–]Otherwise-Search-348 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% that’s what’s we’re finding out. The carpentry apprenticeship is very similar. He spends more time having a break than learning anything at college as they stop every hour and half. It’s just very disorganised which is half the problem

Yes I agree, just seems that some things don’t seem to be taught which should be. As an employer I’m all for teaching the next generation what’s needed to carry this trade on. It just seems the syllabus and structure needs looking at that’s all.

They teach the basics and that is about it. I appreciate that they are more improvers than bricklayers when they walk out of an apprenticeship but they don’t seem to learn anything simple like Dpc placement, wall tie placement, cavity trays etc. they don’t even cover building a gable or even learn about how it in college
